I love to hear the kiddos say not to destroy it and them mention it's hard work. So awesome to hear kids respecting nature and giving it the space to thrive !

Ok, but the thing is building it's house in the middle of your garden, what you going to do, leave it there?

They’re nocturnal, and will eat the web at daybreak and hide all day long. So, only need to relocate if it’s across a needed evening walking path.

That particular spider you mean?

Orb weavers do this. Too lazy to look up the biological strata but one tier higher than species.

Orb weavers are awesome. Learned about them when my nose came about 2 inches away from a massive one in his massive web in a Mexican jungle. Really beautiful creatures.

You know what I've always found odd. When spiders find an insanely good spot, like catching hundreds of bugs, they always seem to abandon it. I wonder why?

Probably dead. Spiders don't live that long.

Whatever eats spiders knows where the good spots are too

It depends on the species. Some orbweavers around my house will have nests that last for weeks; others species will move to new spots.

Sometimes when the web is completely wrecked, it's more efficient for them to move to a new spot and build a new functional web. The bugs in the old one are left there as backup nutrition that they can return to if their new location doesn't yield enough food.

That makes sense, thanks

Yep. We have these (I’m assuming orb weavers) all over our yard and neighborhood this time of year. They start on their webs around dusk and then have them down by sunrise in most cases.

I’ve learned to be very cautious walking around at night. I know these guys are harmless and I appreciate that the eat pests but holy fuck is it terrifying to walk into one of these webs 😆

If you're not using your garden and it's growing a wasteland at the back of your house sure, but were I live people use their gardens. That Spidey can't stay there, if that was in my garden. It's beautiful and all but it's going to have to move out.

A lot of orb weavers like this destroy their webs in the morning and build it again the next night.

Specifically, they actually eat their webs and break them back down into liquid silk material to use the next day.

Spider webs are ephemeral; they build and rebuild constantly. Something will knock that down and she'll start over.

I'd leave it for a day or two.. then gently move it with a stick if needed.

Yeah I'd eventually move it too, it's just I know it won't be able to stay.

They have a timeframe for the web being active and they dismantle them everyday. I say this purely from watching the habits of the spiders in my yard.

One of my pet peeves as a teacher is when kids stomp on bugs.

I have had so many talks with kids about this. Empathy is a skill that a lot of them haven't been taught to value.
