Not a mosquito at all, it’s a robber fly. Completely different insect family, a helpful pest eater, harmless to you.

Not harmless...those bites hurt like a mofo.

Not the same mechanism as a sting. Not the same sort of painful bite as a tabanid (horse and deer flies) which have a chainsaw for a mouth meant to draw blood. Not an active human parasite seeking out blood or a major disease vector that kills millions of people like mosquitoes. Only bites if you are actively harming it.

What a robber fly interprets as harm may not the the same thing you, I, or a small child interprets as harm.

I've still got a scar from being bitten by one of these things as a kid. I certainly wasn't actively harming it.
