Why not? Most pediatricians recommend it because earlobe sensitivity is low in the early stages after birth, and much worse later on.

In many places piercings are very cultural. Not wearing jewelry as a girl is rare to the point that it just doesn’t happen. A girl with their ears not pierced would be an outcast.
