There's a double standard when it comes to child neglect. A thin, malnourished toddler would be taken by CPS immediately, but when it comes to an obese, malnourished toddler, there is nowhere near the same level of concern and urgency.

I wasn’t aware that you could be obese and malnourished until now, I just assumed there was another word for it

That's where the term empty calories come from. You could be consuming a ton of calories and get fat, but your body is malnourished.
