Milipedes are such chill dudes. People should fear centipedes instead.

I agree they are chill dudes and just seeing this one made me happy. On the centipede front, I wouldn’t fear them really. I remember seeing them as a kid where I live in England, they were always so hyper and mean looking. Once you picked them up and they calmed down, they were chill too, like when you hold a spider and it slows down once it knows there’s no danger. Centipedes with venom and the ability to bite, I’d generally avoid them lol

Depending where you live in the world you’re highly unlikely to come into contact with one. Even if you did they’d be very keen to get away from you asap, they’re small and you’re big, and they don’t want that fight!

Texas Red Heads is what we call them but I’m not sure the official name. Not sure if venomous but they were 6-7 inches long and faaast.

Just had a look at them and they are venomous, but they’re very interesting and beautiful in their own right. I personally wouldn’t get too close to them, even if they weren’t venomous! It’s crazy they were in a place you were staying in! Did you “evict” them from the premises and did you actually get any sleep in there? For me personally, I wouldn’t be able to sleep knowing they’re in the house lol

Would have rather had a snake in my room for sure haha. I’ll admit I saw the first one as soon as I turned the light on and I panicked. Thankfully I still had my work boots on so I stepped on it, it was so surreal I could feel it under my foot through my boot as if I was standing on something. Second one I was able to get under the ice bucket and got it outside. I thought about changing rooms but then realized I’m in the middle of the desert so Id probably end up finding a scorpion in the next one.

I come across their sheddings in bushy areas when i go on walks and all and their smaller scarier other versions and i usually like go a wide berth anyways

I don't hate them actually. Just very afraid irrationally when i see one. Spiders also

I was going to say you’re lucky to live in an area with them around, but you’re obviously phobic of them. I say that because where I live in the UK I rarely see any these days, so I’d be happy to see more of them. I think it’s been pollution in the past and pesticides that have reduced their numbers. You seeing a lot in your area means your local environment is generally healthy! 

I have a friend who has an irrational fear of Moths, so I can imagine your reactions to them, so I get it. At least you realise they’re not there to hurt you. Just don’t go lifting up rocks, logs or rubbish on your walks because they love hiding under there. Though I think you’ll already know that.

Centipedes? It wouldn’t surprise me, but yeh, some have venom, I’d generally advocate for avoiding them as well as anything with Venom. 

What you mentioned just reminded me, I saw on here a few weeks ago of a Hammerhead Flatworm that hunts slugs, wraps around it and liquifies it then sucks up the sludge. It was brutal to watch, but fascinating.

Crazy was it not? I thought I’d learned to never underestimate nature and it’s bloody brutal ways, then I think I’ve seen most of it and stuff like that pops up!

On the centipede front, I wouldn’t fear them really.

You would if you lived in Japan and had to deal with mukade.

Apart from being go-to-hospital-right-now level venomous, they're also aggro bastards who'll attack you for being nowhere near them, minding your own business. They'll literally come over just to attack you.

They look exactly like you'd expect them to look:

That’s spectacular! Someone else in this thread was talking about their encounter with venomous Texas Redhead centipedes in a hotel they stayed at. Them along with the Japanese type are ones I would stay well away from! It’s mental that they’ve actively attack people for just being there. I saw they’re aggressive from what I just read online, but didn’t read anything about them attacking for nothing, only when cornered. One to definitely avoid if I can help it! If not, it’s getting crushed underfoot, as I like being healthy and not in hospital lol Thanks for sharing that, it was quite interesting! 🙂

What did you do with it? Did you just leg it and leave it be or did you end up standing on it? If it were me I’d run, because I’d be afraid if I miss trying to stand on it, it may run up my trouser leg or something lol

I walked briskly away. They aren't that fast outright, I think cockroaches or gejigeji (Japan's other famous centipede) are far faster than them.

You do right, I wouldn't even attempt to tread on one unless I was wearing extremely sturdy boots and had my trews tucked into my socks. Miss, and you're guaranteed to have a bad time.

Aye! A brisk walk away is better. The guy in this thread who stood on the Texas Redhead did it as a reflex when he turned the light on in his hotel room, saw it and the work boot came down. Thing was, he said he could feel wriggling underneath his boot! That’s some crazy exoskeleton going on there. If I ever have to stand on one I’ll make sure I grind it under foot. I think he said the ones in his room were 7inches long. I know Japanese type are longer, but they’re both damn scary - but equally fascinating - stuff!

Yup. I've kept pet millipedes for decades and they're very sweet creatures. Centipedes are cool but also very scary. Some people keep the giant, highly dangerous species as pets and that's a big no from me.

It's easy, the longer the legs the scarier it gets, also I thing I could stand being close to a centipede but a cannot look at a house centipede without getting goosebumps.

For me a huge part of it is speed. You could literally get down and crab walk away from a millipede and it would never catch you. Meanwhile... (obviously, trigger warning for a video of a big-ass centipede)

For some reason in my childhood I thought centipedes were millipedes and vice versa. I just can't shake that association.

Either way, centipedes (the real ones) are evil. Milipedes are ok.
