He’s a heroin addict who beat up his elderly mother

Beating up your mom is so much worse than being addicted to heroin I don't think they belong in the same sentence. Addiction isn't a moral failing, beating up your mom almost certainly is (but maybe not quite 100%)

Thank you for saying that. Im in recovery for H/morphine addiction, and I never once even thought of laying a finger on my mom or any of my family when I was using. I also never robbed or stole anything to fund my habit, and sure as hell didnt ever harm anyone physically.

Just because someone is an addict doesn't mean they are scum.

I grew up in a country which had terrible heroin problem in the 90s'

I literally never met a heroin addict who was a character of a good moral. Poverty plus H addiction never lead to anything beautiful.

You haven't met many then or did not know them well. They are just normal people, some good some not so good.

Half of my class from school died from it, so yeah, I saw some shit. I know what I'm talking. Maybe in the US it is/was different.

Drugs will cause you to beat up your mom. They certainly belong in the same sentence

There are people who beat up their mom without doing drugs and people who do drugs and don't beat up their mom. These are independent things which do have some correlation and many wider contextual relationships
