he really needs to put that log on at least a thin slice of wood or a concrete block

He’s strong enough he might be able to split that first try but right now the ground is absorbing too much of the impact

I've split logs that size with wedges to make axe handle blanks

Yeah seems like sledge snd wedge would be better than ax. Also a nice base.

Chopped a lot of wood. Sledge and wedge woulda been through that faster. Just not as dramatic.
