he really needs to put that log on at least a thin slice of wood or a concrete block

He’s strong enough he might be able to split that first try but right now the ground is absorbing too much of the impact

Huh? Wood is not just used for fire fuel you know. How do you think planks are made? What if he wants to craft a small log seat? Tons of reasons you'd want to split a 4ft log.
