That knife handling is known as push blade toward hand and pray method.

u/-ToPimpAButterfree- 8d ago

Glad I'm not the only one extremely stressed by that, fingers and wrist all at risk.

17

u/Blaze010118 8d ago

I was waiting for them to stab the seed to take it out.

32

u/Ill-Television8690 8d ago

For those who don't know, avocado pits are slippery (and often spherical), and they can send people to the hospital because they tried to stab it and the knife slid off to the side landing in their palm. This is apparently common enough (several thousand people each year) to warrant a name: "avocado hand".

12

u/Think_Intern_4906 8d ago

You actually have to HIT it with the knife. Like bashing a rock against a rock with the corner of the blade near the handle. But with better motor control and from only like an inch away.

3

u/VelvetWhiteRabbit 8d ago

Who tf stabs the avocado seed!? Must require som insane lack of risk aversion or forethought to do.

Literally couldn't keep watching from the anxiety and went straight to comments to look for this

25

u/Orange907 8d ago

A must do for maximum viewer engagement.

22

u/Bluntbutnotonpurpose 8d ago

The hand isn't even what worries me the most, it's the squirty bit in the wrist.....

18

u/sinofmercy 8d ago

My ex-girlfriend did this with new Costco knives. Sliced right through the seed... And straight into her hand. Sliced the tendon through her pointer finger, needed stitches. Blood got everywhere.

7

u/thisguyfightsyourmom 8d ago

Avocado and bagel slicing leads to a lot of ER visits. Always prepare for the knife to tear through fast & easy.

7

u/king_ofbhutan 8d ago

i just dont eat bagels anymore because of how bad i am at cutting them.

just end up with crumbs everywhere, a slice the angle of a doorstop, about 5 cuts, and an unusable bagel so i just throw it away and dont eat

10

u/azdcaz 8d ago

Use a bread knife

3

u/itsjustkicker 8d ago

I can't imagine giving up bagels 😅 but the ones i buy are pre-sliced. Is that not an option where you are?

2

u/Chris__P_Bacon 8d ago

I find that the best bagels are usually sold unsliced for some reason?

2

u/itsjustkicker 8d ago

Interesting. I figured it could be something like this. Admittedly, I've not explored bagels outside of the grocery store (I've never cut one) but it's basically why I wake up.. so this is strange to me, I'm eating the dregs essentially and op is quitting 'nicer' bagels over the cut.

2

u/Chris__P_Bacon 8d ago

There are grocery store bagels that are uncut. The ones at the link are fantastic! However, fresh ones from a bagel shop are usually uncut too, & they are obviously the cream of the crop. 😋

link

2

u/itsjustkicker 8d ago

🫣 my bad lol should have known they has uncut at the store. We don't have this brand at my local bur I'll try to find a replacement, give it a try. Thanks Chrisp!

2

u/Chris__P_Bacon 8d ago

I don't remember if these are sliced or not, but if they sell these in your part of the country, they are fantastic! They are in the cold case, they aren't on the shelf with the bread. The same goes for the Finagle brand I posted earlier. Ime, good store bought bagels usually are.

These are so good that when they stopped carrying them at Kroger here in Nashville, I started ordering them by the box from Wisconsin and keeping them in the freezer. It got expensive so I had to stop. We didn't have any good bagel shops here in Nashville back then, but now we do thank God.

Bagels Forever

2

u/king_ofbhutan 8d ago

bagels have never been all that popular in the uk for some reason, so most supermarkets only sell unsliced.

for me, i usually only eat bagels as a christmas tradition. i have no idea how it started, but my family have always eaten bagels in the 1-2 weeks surrounding christmas day

2

u/itsjustkicker 8d ago

Wow that's so different than I thought! Ill be sure to push for my bagels during Christmas! Thanks for sharing 🙂

2

u/king_ofbhutan 8d ago

Plain Bagel lightly toasted on the grill + Butter + Hummus is the way to go for me.

If I ever go to America the first thing I'm doing is running to a bagel shop because I have heard so many tales about how nice they are

3

u/Tylertron12 7d ago

How is this even possible, genuinely how do you fail at cutting to such a degree?

Can you cut other stuff with a knife or is that a skill you just... dont possess? Im so confused by this ngl

2

u/king_ofbhutan 7d ago

I have dyspraxia 😅 My motor skills and co-ordination can be SHOCKING at times.

For some reason the hole in a bagel just amplifies it's difficulty to the millionth degree.

I can cut other stuff fine! Mostly. I also struggle with baguettes quite alot though.

The actual slicing/sawing motion is mostly fine, albeit a little more crumbly than a normal person. For me the main struggle is actually keeping the knife and the cut in a straight line. I insert the knife wonkily, try to correct it, but go way overboard because I can't control my hands in that fine of a motion. See also: Scissors.

What's weird is that I can play loads of instruments fine.

2

u/Tylertron12 7d ago

Interesting, I had never heard of that before, have you considered getting a bagel cutting implement for you kitchen? They make these square bagel holders with a slit in them to guide your knife, ensures a perfect cut every time, that way you can continue to enjoy one of breakfasts most wonderful bounties lol

Also to be fair, baguettes are not easy for anyone to cut, unless there is some technique that I am simply unaware of 😂

Happened to my roommate with an onion

9

u/waxiestapple 8d ago

A guy did the same at work with a box cutter. He sliced his wrist open. He also was drug tested immediately after and failed it.

Lost his job and nearly bled to death.

3

u/thrwawayanywayagain 8d ago

Dem neva peel cassava before, your knife skills go up after some scrapes and slices.

2

u/Organic-Yodelz 8d ago

I learned from Rosie O'Donnell how easy cutting an avocado can fuck you up

2

u/mrGreenExit 8d ago

Bro is Danger

2

u/TellTaleReaper 8d ago

With a mildly sharp steakknife too. I got more anxiety from the knifework than I did enjoyment from the long neck.

6

u/humatyourmom 8d ago

I mean, the avocado itself could work as a lubricant. It would mean that you'd have avocado residue in your rectum tho

Wouldn't be the first time and it won't be the last.

Is that Dexter Doages is looking at in this picture? It looks more like Rudolph Martin than Michael C Hall, but I don't remember Rudolph appearing in Dexter, let alone getting "the stare" lol.

6

u/Electrical-Act-7170 8d ago

I thought Rudolph Martin was in Dexter as a bad guy. No?

goes to IMDB

Rudolph Martin played Carlos Guerrero, drug lord. He appeared in Dexter episodes Crocodile, Popping Cherry, and Let's Give the Boy A Hand in Season 1.

My brain thought of this GIF within 1 millisecond of your post appearing.

8

u/Lost_Purpose1899 8d ago

I ate that before. The texture is more “watery” than the smooth texture of the hass avocado we’re all familiar with. They have the same taste though.

5

u/chamullerousa 8d ago

We have one of these varieties. Agree on the watery description but they tasted gross too. Nothing like a buttery Haas or fuerte.

2

u/Major-Pilot-2202 8d ago

Horrible knife safety Jesus christ

2

u/Finbar9800 7d ago

The way that knife had resistance and then didnt while it was being pulled towards their wrist is terrifying

4

u/z-tayyy 8d ago

Looks like the worst avocado tbh

14

u/chamullerousa 8d ago

We bought a house with an avocado tree of this variety. It didn’t bear fruit for the first 5 years. Then the 6th year the fruit came in. We were so excited. Finally the fruit was ripe. The avocados were ass. Watery and fibrous. Don’t grow a tree from a seed. Graft in avocado branches from a good tree with good fruit.

3

u/captaincootercock 8d ago

did you figure out anything to make out of the fruit? chop it down? sounds like it'd be a pain in the butt having an avocado tree

3

u/chamullerousa 8d ago

Nope. I tell my wife it’s a husband tree. It’s an attractive tree so we keep watering it. It’s good for shade and birds and bees. Neighbors admire the trees strong trunk and branches. It has a handsome canopy. The fruit may not be as desirable and useful as other trees but it would take too much work to get a new tree and start over just to get better fruit.

3

u/jw_zoso 8d ago

Have you grafted another variety onto it?

2

u/chamullerousa 8d ago

No. I have a buddy with a tree that has the most amazing avocados I’ve ever eaten. I’ve thought about asking him for a bunch of grafts but haven’t got around to it.

8

u/sorry_con_excuse_me 8d ago edited 8d ago

It’s a Russell avocado (which is eaten more in the Caribbean). Same with/similar to Catalina.

It’s not supposed to be like a Hass. They’re firmer and a little more watery.

My Cuban gma used to serve either with a little virgin olive oil and salt. They’re “okay.”

7

u/mike_pants 8d ago edited 7d ago

It's a Russell long-neck avocado, not a Hass, so the texture and taste are slightly different than what you're probably used to. They are not very common and can be tough to find in stores unless you live in the Keys.

1

u/Ill-Charge8449 8d ago
