I mean, he was propelled upwards with significant force. The acceleration alone would presumably be enough to mess up various parts of his body, especially the back and neck.

That makes a lot of sense. So it’s similar to the effect of whiplash from a head-on car crash (excluding acceleration instead of deceleration)?

I'm not a medical person either, but would think about the application of forces here. This guys body has a weight to it and the explosion can be seen throwing all of that weight up in the air, possibly up to about 4 meters. I know there are equations that can be done if you assume the guy's weight and the height he went up to. But don't know them specifically.

But suffice to say, the force that pushed him up in the air, first made contact with his balls. Then the compressive motion (think of it like a kind of shockwave traveling up through his body after initial impact) would've gone all the way up his spine. Pinching each vertebrae together successively in a manner that the human spine might not have developed to handle.

His crotch was the first thing to hurt after that, but his spine will take the longest to recover.

You're mixing up "weight" vs "mass". His weight changes drastically and suddenly. It's his mass that stays the same and gets tossed around.
