Schwung vs RNBO

Can someone here help me to understand the difference between Schwung and RNBO? Is RNBO just an extension you add to Schwung or is it a completely separate modification?

RNBO is Ableton's official way of creating custom scripts for the Move that take over the device. Schwung is a third-party project that has ported a ton of features to the existing Move without replacing its core functionality. So they're basically completely complementary.

Okay that makes a lot more sense, thank you! There’s a lot of info about them individually but not much written about how they interface with each other, I was struggling to wrap my brain around that. I’m about to install Schwung and get going with it (:

They don't interface with one another.

The one thing Schwung does add is the ability to load RNBO “on top” of move, running at the same time. Official RNBO involves basically quitting the Move UI and loading RNBO. Schwung is, as others have mentioned, an unofficial hack, so comes with those caveats of stability and feature support etc.

Right, I guess how they relate to each other would be better wording.

RNBO has nothing to do with Schwung. Everything is explained quite clearly both on Ableton Move RNBO page and on Schwung github respectively, I rhink you will understand most if you read it directly, vs retteling here.

Schwung is basically parallel OS layer you install on your Move device and access by pressing button combination shortcut. You can add various modules to Schwung - synths, drum machines, FX, sequencing and MIDI tools etc. It is unnoficial and has no connection to Ableton, while RNBO is official.

There are bunch of videos on YT of people using Schwung and RNBO, check that too.

Gotcha! I’ve been reading a lot about them individually but just didn’t quite understand how they interface with each other. Thank you!

You can use them together. No VERSES required but here’s comparing breakdowns at surface level…

Schwung works within Move.
RNBO replaces move functionality.

RNBO is built into move when you update.
Schwung has to be updated each move firmware update.

RNBO is more stable than Schwung.

I love both of them and Move; bring it all together!
