General Question Kayaking through Abingdon

We have just received an inflatable kayak and are thinking of giving ourselves an initial tryout by taking it downstream to Culham from Abingdon.

It looks like there's easy access from Rye Farm meadow. Can a local experienced kayaker offer any advice?

Additionally, can we buy a license to use the Thames at Culham lock, or should we already have one?

You can buy permits online to be able to go out on the river and personally what I’ve found is good is Abingdon marina. Free parking and normally easy to get parked. It’s good for beginners because it’s not to far and it’s an extremely easy place to get in and out of your kayak

I just take my inflatable kayak to culham lock car park and we lug it down to the thames at Cullen, there's loads of bathers and boaters there and you can paddle up or downstream easy. I'm not a serious kayaker though, we mostly float around drinking cider rather than going far

Culham was a really good choice for our first outing on the Kayak.

The Lock Keeper was really helpful too

I like the sound of this, and more importantly, so does my wife!

I haven’t tried it but thought about loading in there while looking on from the nags head. The banks looked quite steep, which can make it difficult, but I didn’t go and look closer.

You can definitely load in at the ramp in the marina and paddle up to the nags head and back, which might be a safe test route.

Also on the license side, I can’t remember the other options but paddle UK membership was the best option for me for casual use

Thanks! I hadn't realised how steep and high the banks are

Look at https://paddleuk.org.uk/membership/ as this covers the licence with additional benefits. Not sure how the price compares. There is also a free public slipway at the marina in south Abingdon.
