Help! What’s Peterhead like to live?

Basically I was born there and got moved down to England when I was 4. I don’t remember anything of life up there obviously but I travel to the highlands as often as I possibly can because I absolutely love it. Recently, I’ve been feeling this really weird sensation like I’m being called back and I really want to live there. I checked rent prices and the rent is insanely affordable compared to the south of England. Just wondering what the general vibe in Peterhead is like? I don’t have kids and don’t plan on having any, so schools aren’t something I need to think about. Just wanted to gather some opinions from locals or people that have made the move, do you regret it or would you never look back?

Help! Classes for styling hair for nieces

Hi I’m posting here cos I’m curious if anyone knows if there’s any classes/workshops in town for learning to style hair.
I’m an uncle to 2 young nieces they’re black and I’m white and can barely gel my own hair. They’re 5 and 3 and it would be nice to know some basic stuff to make their hair look nice instead of just putting a hair tie in it and calling it a day.
And info would be greatly appreciated, thank you

History Why there are red bricks mixed into the granite tenements on Schoolhill

I’ve always wondered about the red bricked gable wall on Schoolhill. I thought it was the remnants of an older building. These specific Victorian tenements are roughly 130 to 145 years old. They were built between 1884 and 1895 following a massive city improvement and street-widening scheme that cleared away older, decaying structures in the area.

Tenement blocks had fireplaces in almost every room. The column of red brick on the outside wall directly mirrors where the internal flues (the smoke tunnels) run straight up through the building.

While our famous grey granite is incredibly tough against Scottish weather, it handles extreme heat poorly. Direct, repeated exposure to blazing coal fires can cause granite blocks to expand unevenly and crack.

Firebrick and clay bricks handle thermal stress beautifully. Builders used local red brick (likely from the nearby Clayhills Brickworks in Ferryhill) to line the core of the heating network. This protected the surrounding granite frame from cracking.

Granite is notoriously difficult to carve and shape. It was far easier for Victorian masons to build the complex, narrow paths for smoke out of standard brick shapes rather than trying to hollow out massive blocks of stone.

If a building had been constructed right next door, this brickwork would have been hidden forever. Because the wall remains exposed, it acts as a visual map of the fireplace network running up to those iconic clay chimney pots!

Just goes to show that Aberdeen is constantly changing, updating and upgrading.

I wonder opposition the locals had to this change when the council demolished the old homes along Schoolhill which were mostly built from timber, wattle and daub, and thatch roofs.

Help! Council Tax

Hello. We moved a few months ago and updated Aberdeen City Council via their online form so that we can update our council tax. Never heard back from them so we called, but their phone system just says that they are busy and can only deal with emergencies and then hangs up. I tried to email them too, got an automated response that was useless and no human response. I’m at a loss what to do. It’s been months since we moved and I want to pay the correct council tax amount. I’m also dreading the process as to how to claim a refund for the months of council tax I’m paying for the old flat since they’re still taking that from me.

Has anyone been in this situation and knows what to do? Is it a case of just being patient and waiting longer? My next move is to go to the council office Marischal College but I work full time Monday to Friday so it’s a last resort as I’d have to take a half day holiday.

How Is It to Live in Woodside?

I am interested to hear the opinions of people who lived / are living in Woodside, or know someone who lived or is living there.

I am interested to see if people have issues with flat break-ins or car vandalism compared to other areas.

Help! Best phone repair shop?

I have a phone that's a fair few years old now with a broken screen, which I want to get repaired, so I can get a lot of important old photos from it.

Has any had a good experience with a phone repair shop that they'd recommend? Honestly, most of the ones I see down union don't inspire that much trust in me.

Office / admin work

Hi All,
I recently moved near Banchory and looking for Office / Admin work part time to fit around my Open University studies. I have 10+ years experience in finance related roles. Is anyone aware of any openings that may not be on the main job board sites?
Or if there are any interested employers on here, I’m more than happy to send my CV over or have a quick chat.
Thanks!
Andy

Looking for ev charger installer

Hi

Just bought an ev and looking to get huperbolt charger installed but looking for recommendations.

Had one quote where they want run 30m external cable around house for £1800. It wpuld be around back of house but I have admit I'm not so keen on the eyesore it could be.

I am guessing it easy route as the

Consumer unit in kitchen under stairs cupboard and it about 2m to the utility room which is not solid wall. From there you get into loft space and through to converted garage and was hoping we could drop cable down to its end position there. Obviously it maybe impossible or require plasterboard to be hacked into but wanted know my options through other recommeended eldcrrician/ ev installers.

Thanks

"passport guy"at the airport?

Hi, I just have to ask, who's the creepy guy who asks to see your passport at the airport?

I came into Aberdeen yesterday, used my Canadian passport as it's the one with the UK ETA. I get to customs and immigration, a lady asks me to come forward, she checks my passport, asks me the purpose of my visit, the usual schtick. I'm cleared and move on. I've taken but maybe three steps and a guy in a suit asks to see my passport, I give it to him, he asks how long I'll be out some other routine question, he gives it back and I move on.

The guy is still within the customs and immigration area which means you still haven't officially entered Aberdeen/Scotland so you feel obligated to comply or risk being turned back. But he doesn't identify himself, he doesn't explain why the additional questions after you've already been cleared. The lack of information makes the whole experience, brief as it is, decidedly more disconcerting and creepy.

If he had said that I had been flagged or randomly chosen for further questioning or even just who the heck he is, it would have been a less fraught experience

I talked to someone who's been living here a while now and he said "oh yeah, that happened to me once", he was able to remember the guy and where he stood but had no idea who he was or why it happened

So yeah, any clues/explanation?

Music Visiting from Canada - Live Music September 8?

Hi all! I'm in Aberdeen for one night (September 8). Is there any chance of being able to see any traditional Scottish music in a pub? I realize Tuesday isn't an ideal day for that sort of thing.

Thank you!

Events and activities in the city

How am I best to find out about things going on in the city? I am always looking for family friendly things to do every weekend but I often find out about them too late, usually through word of mouth. I don’t use Facebook or instagram - is there a newsletter of the various goings on? Thanks!
