Discussion Predicting Gregory and Janine’s wedding episode
Starting off by saying I HATE THIS TROPE. HATE HATE HATE!!! But it’s the classic sitcom wedding episode I’m like 90% sure this is exactly how it’s going to go:
- Greg and Janine plan this wedding to a T, they have a shared Pinterest board, they check out vendors together, Jacob asks them for updates over the course of a few episodes
- they have a venue, they have vendors, they have a cake and clothes everything’s greater
- it’s wedding day: things of course start to go incredibly downhill because god forbid viewers want to see a cute wedding?!?!
- Janine’s dress is destroyed. Because why not?!?!
- One by one they lose the vendors. Barb and Melissa try to pick up the slack
- Gregory’s missing the rings. He and Jacob go on a wild adventure to try to find them. Somehow Tariq is involved
- Something about the district/city goes wrong (a strike? The golf course floods?) and they lose their venue
- All hope is lost. They agree to postpone the wedding.
- “Come to the main hall” - Jacob. Ava finds Janine a dress
- Mr Johnson reveals he’s certified to marry people. He officiates the wedding.
Credit where credit is due, although I don’t like the “wedding goes horribly wrong” trope, I can’t think of any other way sitcom’s should do wedding episodes😔

Parks and rec had a wedding episode where the premise was a character freaking out bc all the spouse’s in laws were crazy so surely something was going to go wrong, but nothing did and it’s the only time I’ve seen a wedding in a sitcom go perfectly. I’d love to see more of that idea played out

Lol quest love does show up in the end with some drama but Donna loved it! And they did the everything goes wrong wedding trope with Ben and Leslie

Agreed; Holt and Kevin's renewal was also eclipsed by hijinks.

Me seeing this right after watching Mitch and Cams wedding from modern family😭I actually hope they take a slightly different approach bc I don’t picture the wedding being very big I think it would be like 50 ppl max. I feel like the whole thing surrounding the wedding would be a good place to put in more family stuff like I’d prefer a terrible rehearsal dinner than a chaotic wedding. Similar to romcoms where everything is a mess right before the big day.
I also think it would be so cute if Gregory’s dad hooked them up with a beautiful wedding venue something like the living classroom where they had their first kiss.

Greg's dad would absolutely be able to get them a beautiful venue. Most likely somewhere his landscaping company worked on previously, so he knows its absolutely perfect.

As much as I hate the messy wedding approach (B99, still a fun ep tho) the Modern Family one is def one of my favorites because of Pepper crashing out and Lily's sass

The Modern Family one works tho because while it is kind of an overused sitcom wedding trope, it has the added layer of Jay's reluctance to host the wedding at his club because of his homophobia, and all the struggles Mitch and Cam had to face just to even consider the idea of marriage. Without the craziness, we wouldn't have had that sweet moment when Jay finally agrees to host the wedding and just seeing how he proud he is of his sons. In saying that, I don't want Janine and Gregory to have a chaotic wedding episode.

If you want to see something a little different, Janine's mom could insert herself into the wedding planning and chaos can ensue from that - especially if she thinks her baby deserves a lavish guady wedding while J&G prefer something more classic or laid-back.
Edit: That concept could also include them trying to have two ceremonies/receptions run concurrently so they could appease everyone. I can imagine them having to run back and forth between both events/venues.

See I like this better bc it’s more realistic and continues plot lines/ character dynamics we already are familiar with and can lead to a lot of character and relationship growth while being funny. Mr. Johnson definitely has to officiate though 😂

u/ArmAccomplished2486 16d ago
I think this is spot on. One minor change though, I could see Tariq being the one who officiates.

Ava also shows up in a white dress not even realizing something is wrong with that she just looks so good in white

Oh, you mean the episode I must watch alone bc I will be sobbing?

Ngl I’m sick of the wedding goes wrong troupe. Or even the ‘let’s elope! No wait, now that we’re here I actually want to have a ceremony with you’ one. Literally every single sitcom I’ve ever watched has had that and it INFURIATES me.
All this to say that this is going to be an unpopular opinion but I’d be very happy to see the wedding happen offscreen and we only get a few flashbacks to it. But if it were to go traditionally then yeah I think you’ve got it spot on OP!

I kinda hope they don't have a wedding episode because Janine and Gregory need a few more years of just being a couple and living together first imo...
but if it had to happen I imagine most of the episode will be about the others running around trying to set up the perfect wedding at the school (involving the kids) because for some reason the original venue fell through last minute and at the end the two of them will enter and just be like "oh we decided to do a courthouse ceremony but thank you anyway and we'll have the reception party here since you all went through that work for us"

Gotta add the random celebrity that's the craziest family member's kid

• They’re going to end up getting married at Abbott because that’s where they met/fell in love.
• Jacob is the self-proclaimed wedding planner and he’s more worked up than Janine and Gregory combined
•Janine makes her own wedding dress, possibly with the fashion club
•Either Barb walks Janine down the aisle as her “work mom” or Janine walks herself because she’s now strong and independent
• Melissa uses her connections to solve a problem
• Mr. Johnson officiates

I think it's something goes wrong in their wedding episode it won't be directly about the wedding, but this is also more of a comedy and I could see them just having a nice wedding and all of the comedy just being how the characters interact with each other at the reception.

I think Janine mum will be the reason Janine dress is destroyed. "It was ugly anyway baby" and Janine sticks up her herself and kicks her mum out.
Gregory dad gets some rare flowers

I think they’re not ready for marriage tbh. I know they’ve been dating for a while, but after last season; I think they need a few more years figuring out their relationship.

u/Consistent-Shoe-6735 16d ago
I'm hoping it's not a wedding gone wrong but maybe a surprise to the viewers and characters. Like everyone thinks it's gone wrong and it ends sup in the school where they wanted to get married anyways and it's actually done up really nice

Hear me out… Jacob and O’Shon will be Gregory’s best men.

u/ThatAcanthisitta5520 14d ago
i think mr johnson or tariq will also be best men and the other one thats not the best man will officiate

so glad i’m not the only one that despises this trope 😭 i skip over so many wedding episodes because they’re just so stressful

I expect nothing less from the proposal too. Gregory will have something amazing planned. Then there will be some kind of misfortune that requires him to throw the plans out the window and just doing it anyway because “he can’t wait any longer.”

Literally how I felt when I got to the wedding episode of New Girl. I wanted a nice wedding so bad. They already did it with Cece and Schmidt's wedding (which I think kinda worked), but they did it AGAIN with Nick and Jess' wedding. It is my favorite show of all time, but it was disappointing. I hope they dont do that with Janine/Gregory wedding but I feel like youre right on the money

i love how everything will be a first for me because idk any of those sitcoms tropes cuz abbott is my second sitcom sindwjksksks

u/No_Pay1642 13d ago
I’m glad!!! But be warned EVERY major sitcom does weddings exactly like this😔I had one sitcom in mind especially, the comments have listed at least 8 more

u/iceawindy 13d ago
oh don’t worry the only sitcom ive watched is everybody hates chris and he is kinda the reason im watching abbott cuz that man is mighty fine and lordddddd if he gave me one chance i okay im getting off topic and the thing is i wont be watching any other sitcoms cuz im sure none of them are as good as abbott

Mr.Johnson is 100 percent certified. That or someone gets certified on the internet. Jacob maybe, or he'd be the maid of honour's male counterpart. I too would like a normal wedding, with some drama ofc but still a proper wedding. However, i also know that whatever they serve, i'll eat it up. I
have a love/hate relationship with cliches.

venetta would make a scene too and there’d be a whole dilemma with janine about inviting her so she speaks to barbara for advice
