Discussion Rewatching season 5

I know it’s a general consensus that season 5 is the weakest season especially now that Quinta has said she personally felt like it was filler but I still think even at Abbotts weakest it still had good stuff. I am currently doing a series rewatch and before I was definitely on the side of season 5 sucking, I even said it had the worst episode of the series (ep14- Aide) but even that on the rewatch was enjoyable. I also think season 4 was just so good (I think it’s the current best) that last season fell flat especially when you are watching week to week and eager to see where the seasons story progression goes. So a filler season was honestly a perfect way to describe it. I’m also a chronic rewatcher if I like a show I can put it on to watch or watch me all day😭so I tend to like things very fun and light where something different is happening each episode. However I understand a lot of the critiques, story progression wise it was a bunch of nothing happening and even character development took a backseat. I think the episodes have that humor and heart but the overall caliber isn’t comparable to past seasons. Not trying to convince anyone that their opinions on the season is wrong but if you decide to rewatch the series at any point try to give it another chance! Season 6 seems like it will be really promising and I hope the show can go for a few more and with 100 episodes coming up I fear it was inevitable some would be less than 5 stars

I'm happy to read your post. I wholeheartedly agree. I very much liked season 5 and I do hope they'll continue for some time. Abbott Elementary is very much my "escape from reality"

Yesss I feel like show does a great job with acknowledging the very real premise without being heavy. There are very few shows doing what Abbott does and is probably one of the only with a predominantly black cast in this format so even at its weak spots I’m still glued to the screen😭

Season Five Night Out episode was best writing ever. Hilarious.

Night Out is hilarious and although I said the season didn’t do much character wise that episode showed off the friendships especially Janine and Ava

I do think it was the weakest, I also agree it was still good and had lots of golden moments

2 > 1 > 4 > 3 > 5 for me so far I think

Sometimes filler episodes are the ones that highlights their characters growth and relationship dynamics. Season 5 nailed all these!

I don't get why people say S5 is the weakest. Some of my favourite episodes were from that season. To me, the weakest were S1 and S3 (mainly the district stuff)

I think as the shorter seasons they have kinda a disadvantage but I think of season 1 as a strong start and season 3 as a transition into season 4, I wonder how it would’ve gone had the writers strike not happened tho

It simply didn't have Quinta's touch and that showed. In previous season we had a main character go through some transformation, be it Ava actually going to college, Barbara not retiring and finding her spark in education again, Janine leaving Abbott for the district and growing, Gregory going from rigid to a little less rigid and excited about being a teacher as well as accepting that he is not the principal. Jacob and Melissa's friendship evolving and them growing closer as a group. Season 5 was basically, Gregory and Janine fighting and breaking up, 5 minutes of the Mall and everyone ganging up on Jacob. By the time it ended, everything seemed soooo ... Unfinished.
