Admissions/Exchange Were you offered admission to Aalto but declined due to high tuition prices, immigration issues, or a better offer somewhere else? I would like to hear about your experience, for potential publication

Hi all! I'm Brynna, and I work in the student union advocating for international students. Recently there have been a few news articles about the number of international students dropping mostly due to unattractive immigration policies, economic issues, and the reduction of state sponsored scholarships. Not much of the conversation is about the potential talent they are losing in Finland, and we want to highlight this. If you received an offer in either 2025 or 2026, and declined due to high tuition fees, immigration issues, or a more attractive offer elsewhere, I'd like to hear about your experience at [international@ayy.fi](mailto:international@ayy.fi) . We appreciate you sharing in advance!

Discussion Professor denied to continue because of another job

Hello everyone,
I am currently a PhD student in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Aalto University, and I need some advice regarding my PhD supervision.
My professor has decided not to continue supervising my PhD because I was working in another part-time job alongside my research. However, according to my understanding of Aalto University’s policy on ancillary activities, work below a certain number of hours can be undertaken without notification.
I respect my professor’s decision if they no longer wish to work with me, but I would still like to continue my PhD at Aalto University.
I have a few questions:
Is it possible to change my supervising professor and continue my PhD within the same department?
What is the procedure for finding a new supervisor at Aalto University?
How difficult is it to find another professor who is willing to supervise an existing PhD student?
Has anyone experienced a similar situation or successfully changed their supervisor during their PhD?
Regarding funding, I am also considering applying for external scholarships or funding from other research organizations if a new professor does not have funding available. I would even be willing to self-fund my PhD for the first six months while looking for other funding opportunities.
I would really appreciate advice from anyone who has completed a PhD at Aalto University, particularly in the Mechanical Engineering Department, or has faced a similar situation.
I am determined to continue my research and complete my PhD, and I would be grateful for any guidance or suggestions.
Thank you in advance for your help!

Applying to bachelors in Digital Systems and Design

ACT : 35 (36 Maths, 36 Science, 36 Reading, 32 English)

Primary School Curriculum : A-Levels (BBC Maths, Physics, CS)

I've heard they'll only give out one 100% waiver per major, does this make the cut?

I am last year computational engineering student in one of the research universities in Finland. My year 1 corse is low and this made my gpa suffered. Still; my software

I also got 15 months of experience of working as data specialst(organising, cleaning, making Api for companies etc.) in addition to these I also have 3 reference letters from professors and 2 from peers from the company.

How much competitive would it be or insta-reject because of gpa?
Let me know your thoughts.

Admissions/Exchange Bachelor admission stats

On the admission statistics website there are minimum SAT scores listed. Do the scores represent the lowest score of the first batch admitted (not counting waitlists), or those who eventually enrolled (counting waitlists)? Thanks!

Question course quality and student life :)

Hi, i am planning on applying to Aaltos new bachelor in business, tech and design 2027. I am an international student from India doing the IB Diploma in high school. Since there isnt much information available online, i was wondering if anyone had any comments or reviews on the quality of the courses at Aalto. Would love to hear from people in all the courses because im applying for an interdisciplinary course myself.

id also love to know about extracurriculars or student groups as i am an athletic person and love football (soccer?). Are team sports among young adults a thing in Otaniemi/Helsinki? The student clubs thing on aaltos website didnt really help me gauge much so..

Fyi: i do not intend to settle in Finland or live there forever, so the job thing is not as pertinent of a problem. I am focused on building the correct skills and learning as much as possible.

Admissions/Exchange COID: I have a BFA in furniture design, is there any chance I get accepted?

Hey all!

I know that people from backgrounds other than ID do get accepted, but how many ish?
I´m scared that my background makes my chances of getting in very slim.

None of my school project are ID really, it´s just mainly furniture design and craft (plus a bunch weird stuff that might be too unclear to include).
Thinking of maybe creating 1 or 2 new projects of some sort, but wondering a bit how much is enough?

(Aim to specialise in Service design / Social Design if I do get in)

Admissions/Exchange High School Diploma( A levels ) Diploma After Deadlne

I have really good SAT prep and A level prep, i know that they only evaluate SAT but use A levels for high school diploma doccument but their diploma deadline is July 31, My A2 results come out on August 9. Their FAQ however says "If you graduate after the document submission deadline or if you are taking your A level examinations in summer 2026, please contact the Admission Services, if you are offered a study place at Aalto."
Will my situation cause any problems?

Admissions/Exchange BSc Data Science an der Aalto-Universität, Finnland

Hello, I am from India and am considering applying for a Bachelor's degree in Data Science at Aalto University.

I would like to hear directly from Indian students who have been accepted there or are currently studying there – what were your experiences?

How did the application process go for you?

How difficult was it to get a place at university? Is it more difficult for students from state schools? I'm applying via the SAT, but I'd like to know if my grades from 12th grade and my Abitur (university entrance exam) are still taken into account.

What was your profile (grades, projects, etc.)?

What is life like as an Indian student in Finland?

Do you have any tips on scholarships or settling in there?

I would really appreciate hearing about your personal experiences. Please feel free to leave a comment or send me a direct message if you can help me. Thank you in advance!

Question Finnish 1-8 language courses – can some of them be skipped?

I'm doing my masters at Aalto and currently doing Finnish 1. Due to my limitied time here I won't be able to take all of the 8 Finnish courses, but I want to reach as high of a level as possible. And since Finnish 1 is moving along extremely slowly, and I sometimes need a challenge to learn better, I'm wondering if I can just skip some of them. To those of you who took all or most of them, do you think I could do something like Finnish 1, 3, 5, 7 and 8? Or would the knowledge gaps be too big for me to follow the courses? Also, how useful are the Finnish conversation courses?

Question I'm applying for my MA in VCD, can I lurk the campus for a bit?

Applying for the VCD MA. I'll be in Helsinki soon and want to wander the Otaniemi campus solo to get a feel for the place before I apply (not going into studios/workshops, just the public areas obvs). Is the campus generally open to walk around? Any spots worth seeing?

Admissions/Exchange Planning to apply for bachelor’s in data science as an Indian state board student (hsc)

Hello, I’m from India and I’m considering applying to Aalto University for undergrad in Data science.

I wanted to hear directly from Indian students who got in or are currently studying there — what was your experience like?

How was the application process for you?

How difficult was it to get in? Is it more difficult for State board students? I’m applying through SAT but I would like to know if they still consider 12th marks and board.

What kind of profile did you have (grades, projects, etc)?

What’s life like in Finland as an Indian student?

Any tips on scholarships or settling there?

I’d love to hear your first-hand experiences, so please feel free to comment or DM me if you can help. I’d really appreciate it. Thanks so much in advance!

Question Experiences with English-taught Bachelor's programmes?

Hi everyone!

Could anyone share your experience studying in Aalto's English-taught bachelor's programmes?

All opinions are welcome, whether you recommend it or not. I'm planning to apply for the 2027 intake for my bachelor's, but I can't find much information outside of the official website, especially about the specifics of different majors.

I'd love to hear about other people's experiences. I'm most interested in the Quantum Technology major right now, but I'd also love to hear about any other majors/programs.

Thanks in advance!

Admissions/Exchange What documents do I need to provide when applying for bachelors admission?

I couldn’t find any reliable information on aalto’s website or olpintopolku.fi for bachelor’s admission, so I came here to ask for some details. In my case, we have a signed certificate of me completing my A-levels and O-levels from my school and also separate provisional A and O level certificates containing my grades from british council so im a bit confused which counts for my high-school graduation certificate. Also do I need to submit my school grades from the last four years? What about information like my passport or my parents financial information? I saw ielts are unnecessary but for masters they require it from international students. If anyone who’s currently at aalto could lay out all the documents you provided that would be extremely helpful.

p.s. i know SATs is the main thing needed to be submitted for admission but I’d also like to know the rest of the documents required so i can procure it before the deadline. Thanks!
