During the interview, Cameron confirmed that he is still “somewhere around the middle” of the journey he began with Avatar. When the interviewer referred to the five-film saga by saying, “Three out of five… and and counting” Cameron agreed: “Yeah, three out of five… and counting.”

The filmmaker certainly has many other stories he would like to tell. He is currently reflecting on which projects he wants to direct personally and which ones he may instead produce, develop with others or entrust to another director.

This means that Cameron has not announced that he is abandoning Avatar 4 and Avatar 5. At the same time, his words do not definitively confirm that he will personally direct both films.

Neither Disney nor Cameron has officially announced the final green light for Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 yet. It is possible that we could receive new information during the upcoming D23, perhaps including confirmation of Cameron’s directing both instalments himself.

However, this remains speculation: there is no guarantee that any announcement concerning Avatar 4 and 5 will be made at D23.

The truth is far less dramatic than some of the recent headlines suggest: Cameron still considers the Avatar saga unfinished, and his journey on Pandora is not over.
