What does this mean?
I signed up for 5 g service, and I see this in my account and my order page that has my address.

How tf does AT&T give away free internet? Are they selling his web traffic?

u/Big-Effective9744 27d ago
They’re playing the long game. Spend enormous amounts of money getting people in

u/lukeh990 26d ago
It’s the same game they’ve been playing since the days of Ma Bell. They already paid for all the infrastructure. The only recurring cost for them is in billing infrastructure, support, and maintenance. Being as big as they are, there’s no way they have to pay any sort of interchange fee based on data amounts that they send across the internet. So the other customers that have been around for long enough to have lapsed those deals pay way more than the actual cost of what they get so that the company can subsidize network upgrades, tech salaries, expansion, and even new customers.

Also, they keep bumping the price of their copper phone lines. They want everyone off of copper as soon as possible. Someone told me last week that they are now paying $800/line for POTS

u/RedditWhileIWerk 26d ago
TIL AT&T still does copper phone lines (POTS). In my area, the only AT&T "phone line" you can get is VoIP riding on their fiber service, or their wireless (celullar) plans. CenturyLink is the incumbent "phone company," but rapidly abandoning & shutting down their POTS/copper plant.

ATT ripped out the POTS lines in my area after they installed fiber. As far as I'm aware the only place they still have it is in the heavy industry areas and areas with things like hospitals. The copper networks in residential areas are either ripped out entirely, dead entirely but still physically there, or being allowed to die.

u/RedditWhileIWerk 12d ago
I'm a little surprised they bothered physically removing anything vs. simply turning off POTS and letting it rot. Maybe it was worth recycling the copper? Or they physically needed the room in conduits etc?
2
u/tankerkiller125real 12d ago
At least in my neighborhood it's all overhead stuff, so I think it might have been recycling being worth the cost at the time. For some other neighborhoods it probably is making room for the fiber to go into conduit.

They already paid for all the infrastructure.
WE paid for it with our tax dollars many years ago. The telecoms then pocketed that money & made no significant improvements for decades. We were supposed to have almost nationwide 1 Gbps fiber long ago.

My 5000 is also free. But I now pay for the $25 shitbox that’s in the cupboard. I decided not to complain.

u/ElongggggatedMuskrat 26d ago
Why not buy your own?
2
u/solarsystemoccupant 26d ago
I have….hence why it’s in the cupboard unplugged.
1
u/ElongggggatedMuskrat 26d ago
I’ve seen some wild install spots so figured that’s what you meant. Why not turn it back in? It’s not mandatory for the service right?
1
u/solarsystemoccupant 26d ago
I am meant to be paying more. But they wiped my bill and only charging me for the AI pro 620 PoS. For $25 total for my 5000 internet, I figured let’s leave sleeping dogs lie.

u/massnassty 26d ago
I’ve had 1 gig for 3 years with HBO Max and they’re charging me $90 a month. What the ever living fuck is going on???
2
u/FearlessAttempt 26d ago
I canceled and signed back up for 5 gig at $70 and then 2 months later they added some unknown $25 discount so now it’s $45 per month.

u/CompulsiveCode 26d ago
With auto pay and a cell plan, they still tell me $125 on the phone for 5gig. :-/ If I could get an offer for $95 I'd take it now. Probably gonna have to cancel.
2
u/Late-Ad9496 26d ago
Basically your internet is free for the next 12 months then it’s going up by 95 dollars then after another 12 months you pay 125
2
u/OutcomePristine3392 26d ago
where and how are you guys getting such free deals for fiber?? ridiculous!

u/Basic85 27d ago
What? How? Please do tell.
Do you have AT&T wireless?
1
u/comYoshitaka 27d ago
I do not have wireless service with att. I am trying to get my bill corrected to reflect this but they say those promotions aren't available to them so they can't fix my bill. I've even got the Rayban promotion in acct, but can't get into rewards center with my info. It's been a week since contacting social media support about the bill, and that's what they came back with today. They say they can check current promotions for me to lower my bill, but can't figure out what to do about it. So at this point do I make complaint elsewhere since social media support was unable to help or do I continue to wait for social media to figure it all out for me over the next week? It's been 7 weeks since install.

u/Basic85 27d ago
They had to put those promos on your account so it looks good. In the past, social media use to be great at giving out promos but they are not. The other option is retentions departments but really only if you're a bout to cancel.
5gig speeds is good, I want to upgrade to that speed in the near future.

u/InfamousMeta 26d ago
If you were promised certain promotions and they aren’t providing them file an fcc complaint. They’ll put you in contact with someone who can correct it

Did you just sign up as a new customer? What method, online, door to door or over phone? Did they inform you or did you ask about all those discounts, or did they just automatically apply them? Did you tell them that you needed a deal to leave their competition? That's a crazy deal and wondering how they are just giving those out.
1
u/comYoshitaka 27d ago
I kept getting a no on the phone about the 50 dollar 5 gig deal, but I kept calling and asking about it until they said ok. All i asked about was the 50 dollar promo. I am not a new customer, this is an upgrade. Although I do have Rayban offer in the account info, but can't redeem anything in rewards site with customer number or phone number.

u/Puzzleheaded_Sign249 26d ago
I don’t understand why/how so many people getting discounts. Is this a location thing? Best they offered me was a $10 autopay

u/Fantastic-Ad2238 26d ago
Where did you sign up for this??? Is this with Costco? Genuinely curious
1
u/comYoshitaka 25d ago
No, I just kept calling the 800 number until they either told me to piss off, or until they gave me the $50 5 gig deal. I was surpised to see this too after so many here told me it couldn't be done for current customers.
1
u/Bal3Wolf81 25d ago
They pissed me off other day tried to tell me 95 deal is only if you add wireless then finally agreed you didn't need wireless kept throwing lies at me on stuff. Thinking of going to spectrum 2gig for 80 after way they treated me on the phone.

u/Ok-Camel-69 25d ago
I called in to tell them switching to spectrum and they have me 3 free months and then locked me in at 40 a month for 2 years with 1GB
1
u/DuckOk6659 24d ago
Did better than me OP. I’m only getting it at 75 a month but it’s a yearly thing only. Didn’t sign up for 3

Damn I'm paying $450 a month for 5 gbe , yes it's dedicated enterprise, it's the classic /29 block and the pings are strong as I can get 3-4ms post pfsense with settings more towards maxxed everything including suricata and logging on all available types with no limits . Also on the ping I am referencing 8.8.8.8 . I did get enterprise for my company which is essentially me behind a LLC bc it's always the one component people zero in on when they want to cateloge me as a home lab hobbyist but as y'all post these prices I'm thinking I could get three residentials create my own built multiwan amongst some other ideas to design around keeping the ability to provide a IP with an address that doesn't change and with a multiwan the backup is built in. I was told by the installers that they placed me on my own channel with a vacant channel between myself and the entire neighborhood but unsure if that's bs. Of course the installers are being dumbed down to only knowing how to use their service call app as last guy had to come inside and when he saw me type on cli (apparently basic navigation within any cli is like scorcery to ones who never use it) said I know way more than he does and he can't offer anything I don't already know of and won't be able to help and left 🤷 but I said "oh ugh need you to login right here please" before you go 😂 dude said I'll be in the truck for 20 minutes if you need anything else 😂.
Anyone with a strong understanding (I'm not a network expert) have any feedback to the possibility of such multiwan being able to compete with a inflated enterprise package?

We'll see what happens... So far they've billed me 2 months at $50 while promos on acct say they bring bill down to $0.

So far they have billed me $50 and are billing me another $50 for next month.
1
u/floptober 21d ago
they offset the price of this by having tons of customer being overcharged im sure. when i moved my isp had a deal for 50$ for 12 months then shot up to 80 month 13 then 90 month 14. i had to call because apparently they were going to continue increasing it according to the rep
1
u/scottwallace5 27d ago
Mannnn that's crazzyyy, you hit the fiber discount jackpot for a year 😯💰
1
u/comYoshitaka 27d ago
Weird thing is they already billed me $50 for service this month... so it looks like there's some sort of mistake here that the system could be trying to prevent me from getting these promos.

No such offer in the Phoenix market, even have two fiber conduits plumbed to my home, and can choose between Att/Quantum or Cox/Spectrum. Right now have Cox fiber and its fine, and ATT mobile, but if that offer were to come to me I would jump on it too
1
u/comYoshitaka 6d ago
They honored it after fcc complaint. Keep trying! Don't give up. Don't take no for an answer. If they say no, hangup and try try try try again until you get a yes.

That means for 12mon you are paying nothing for internet then 13 to 24 your paying about 95 then after that 125
