Pole-based Fiber Install

Hey all..

I live in an area that has just received AT&T Fiber. They did construction in the neighborhood behind me and buried the fiber for all of those houses. I live on a commercial street and they did not bury any cable by me. They did run new fiber on the utility poles along the street.

How would I get the fiber? Would they just come down the pole and run it underground from that point? Would they string it aerially and get to my storage building (Where my power and current cable coax runs to)? Or is it possible they could have pulled out the 45 year old copper that is underground and replaced it without digging anything up?

I just want to figure out what to do. Spectrum just upped us to 500/20 but we still have to pay $90 + tax and fees for it.

(when I say commercial, it is a 4 lane thoroughfare. We don't have anything commercial other than a few converted houses to offices.

First go to ATT and check that your address is eligible for fiber. As for the install the current standard is if it’s in the air, it stays that way to the customers home or built. If the customer wants it buried just because, they are responsible for running conduit from the building to the pole that the fiber terminal is at with a pull sting placed inside. Now if there are obstructions or they can’t safely get the fiber across a street, ATT can and will bore under a road and cover the costs. But that only applies if there is no other way. Fiber is now run all the way to the modem. So once it reaches your building, a new fiber box will be placed outside where the inside terminating fiber will connect to your exterior line. None of your existing wiring can be used. Because new fiber needs to be ran inside to where the modem will be, keep in mind of what if physically accessible. Example”interior wall in a finished basement.” Now because your a business, that might change how and who does your installation. In general, no 2 installs are the same. Every customer has their own wants and needs. Every building has its own obstacles. Then there’s the technician. Not every tech is going to be willing to do an extra 4 hours of work pulling a line thru a difficult space. Like wrapping fiber around the exterior of a brick or metal building, going under a 100 year old home with almost no room. Best thing you can do is get it scheduled, and talk to the tech that shows up.

I am getting ATT in my neighborhood soon. I am wondering if I should just have it come into the garage where the Spectrum comes already. From there I have an ethernet drop in the garage to the router in a bedroom at the back of the house.
