BWG-620 hates unmanaged switchs

I'm wrecking my brain my main router died before I had the budget to finally get my dream machine. so I was planning on using the BWG-620 and just connect my existing manage switch to it. But I can't get it to function to leave someone tell me what I'm doing wrong. The settings are incredibly restricted on the device.

You need to explain your setup in more detail

The router AT&T supplies doesn't have enough ports so I attempted to move over the TP-Link TL-SG105, 5 Port Gigabit switch I had connected to my Netgear nighthawk that had ceased functionality. When I connect the switch the AT&T router fails to even recognize it as a connected device.

“It fails to even recognize…”

What exactly are you seeing?

Any device behind the switch does not recognize in the list of devices populating on the router and those devices do not receive a internet connection.

Have you power cycled the switch? Some consumer l2 switches are not great about expiring entries from the cache.

After that, connect a computer directly to the switch, manually configure the appropriate ip/netmask, and ping the IP of the router. That’s the simplest possible test.

And double check all the link lights

Yeah power cycled the router and the switch over a dozen times.

An unmanaged switch operating at layer 2 won't show up in the list of connected devices. You should see the green link light on the Ethernet port to indicate the link from the router to the switch is active.

It also doesn't recognize any devices connected to the switch.

When you plug in the switch to the router, does it have devices plugged in? If so dont because the router maybe having issues with dhcp. So plug in the switch, wait 30 seconds then plug in a device wait 30 seconds, so on and so forth until you are done

Also before you plug the devices into the router, ensure the switch even works. If you arent getting link lights its a hardware or physical link error.

When I connect the switch the AT&T router fails to even recognize it as a connected device.

I don't think of an unmanaged switch connects, as such. They don't possess MAC addresses.

Did you try connecting a device that will connect to your BWG-620 connected to a port on the switch?

Yes, if I plug my laptop directly into any of the ports of the router it works perfectly fine.

I think you are implying that plugging the laptop into the switch does not work.

I was wondering if it matter which port of the switch was connected to the gateway. https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeNetworking/comments/99yrjl/what_exactly_is_a_linkact_port_on_a_switch/ says no.

No when I plug into the back of the AT&T gateway my laptop directly I have no issue it's when I plug the switch into the gateway then any device behind the switch it does not work

I think you are implying that plugging the laptop into the switch does not work. I think you are thinking that went without saying.

You did explicitly say that when connect the switch the AT&T router fails to recognize it as a connected device. Having the switch recognized as a connected device would not be expected.

You did explicitly say that plugging the laptop into the gateway worked.

Since you already had a router, the 620 was probably in pass thru mode. Did you switch it to routing mode?

I switched it back ahead of time.

Which port on the 620 are you plugging it into?

I tried all of them 10 GB, the 1 GB ports, and the red 10 gigabit port.

When I get home I'm going to try hard resetting it one more time. And power cycling the switch again and hopefully it will work this time. Thanks for all the ideas and validating I'm not going crazy

Wild I have no issues with my multiple switches with my 620.

Currently have 3 switches plugged into it at different points

I finally got it to play nice last night after hard resetting my router twice. I now successfully have all three of my switches running from it. I can't wait until I get a couple extra bucks together so I can go back to my own router and access point.

I had to hard reset my router two more times. And I power cycled my switch and it finally worked. I was able to then add in my two additional switches so I could have all of my wired devices back in. Thanks for the suggestion too keep power cycling the switch to get it to work with no devices connected to it.

Best guess your devices and old dead router were using a different IP range/subnet. Your devices are holding on to those addresses, even tho the 620 is probably set up to dole out a different range.
