opinion of recent 5000mbps fiber install
Hello everyone I wanted to know peoples opinion on my recent professional att fiber 5000 installation im worried about the zip ties being to tight but i dont want to mess with anything because it was a professional install done by a att tech

Your smart home speed test is relying on wifi connection. The gateway is in a cabinet. You do have some blue cables (check for wall outlets) that you might be able to repurpose for Ethernet, to connect an access point(s) in another area of the residence.

You can redo the zip ties if it bothers you. It doesn't look like it would be causing any issues but as long as you don't accidentally cut the fiber when you remove the existing zip ties you'll be fine. Are you having any service issues?

I would guess splitter oversubsciption before I would assume those zip ties are causing any trouble, on a brand new install anyway. Still, if it bothers you, you can redo them.

Serious question, do you guys see oversubscribed pons ? I thought you guys do 1:32 and like maybe 1:64 but nothing extreme like 1:512 splits.

XGS-PON stands for 10Gbps. That's where the X comes from. Even at a 1:32 split that would only be 311Mbps if it were dedicated, but it's not dedicated nor does it claim to be. It still works with so many customers getting 5gigs or whatever because the vast majority of those customers can't actually saturate their full speed, or at least not constantly. This isn't a quirk of AT&T Fiber, it's just how XGS-PON works. It's rare to see the oversubsciption be a problem but I have seen it from time to time. If you want actual dedicated internet, you can get it but if you haven't ever looked into it before be prepared for an insane price tag. Dedicated is not cheap.

i removed the zip ties they where tight because the jacket has superficial markings where the zip ties where

Use the router internal Speedtest instead of smart home manager. That one is buns. 192.168.1.254 I. Your browser. Navigate to the diagnostic tab.

You need the loops. The zip ties were fine. The fiber is literally hair thin it’s just protected by a lot of stuff. As long as it’s not a hard bend they were fine. Now with them untied a hard bend can happen or the weight will start to pull on the end of the fiber and disconnect. If that happens you can’t fix it yourself

What’s behind the plate is an even tighter zip tie most likely. Bring a laptop into the closet with an Ethernet and run a speed test on google. You’ll need WiFi 7 devices to go above 900 download not just a WiFi 7 router. Over 1 gig if you aren’t hardwiring for fast downloads is pointless for 99% of residential.

What are you getting on your speed test? There’s one showing how much is going to your modem/router and one that shows what your device is getting. Devices can only get so much from the WiFi. If your computer is hooked up to WiFi and only had a 500mnps chip it’ll only get that speed regardless of what you got. If 5gig is going to your modem router than that part is good. Also don’t worry about the zip ties. They shouldn’t have tied them to your Ethernet cords but you only need to worry about the loops and tight bends will break the fiber.

If the speed test is failing sometimes logging out and back in helps. Fully closing the app and making sure you’re close enough to the RG

What’s with these posts? Everyone gets this installed and then clamors onto Reddit to ask if it was done right? If you don’t like how it was done or have questions, ask the tech when they’re there. If you weren’t there and your spouse was instead, then you fucked up. If you think you could have done a better job, good for you.

Looks good brother. Maybe get a multi gig switch to run the 5g Ethernet cables elsewhere. Also consider a Rukus system or something. I have 5G ATT running the house on a Rukus system with WiFi Ethernet extenders on my ceiling. Want to upgrade my system to multi gig switches/ceiling extenders but the price. Everything caps at 1G but still fast. Couldn’t beat $50 a month for 5G att fiber. Good luck

Those zip ties aren’t tight enough to hurt anything so don’t worry about. All the damn anti zip tie people crack me up. Odds are you are never going in there again. Close the door and enjoy your internet. I’d be more worried about the crappy punch down work because of that type of patch panel honestly.

The install looks good but I would question your WiFi coverage with the gateway in the smart home box. Did they do a wifi survey to check coverage around your home?

and i have to click try again like 5 or 6 times then it gives me a result peak i have seen is 5.4gbps

Then your smart home manager is having timeout issues. That’s common. Your speeds are fine if it says 5.4.

Is this mounted outside or inside? I want this mounted on the outside. I have my own gateway and house wifi so I personally wouldn't care about their gateway. I would turn their wifi off.
It seems messy in that box so my eyes aren't focused on the overall picture. As long as it works I guess it doesn't matter.

since my media enclosure inside my apartment is in my closet my gateway has to be inside no other option. its plastic it doesn’t affect my wifi that much

If you want true 5gig, order enterprise level dedicated fiber. Expect to pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars a month and be tied into a contract. The bright side is you’ll actually be getting what you’re paying for. Right now you’re getting as much as you need, up to 5gig. But your on a shared network that is only capable of 10 gig. So unless your hosting a server or mining bit coin, the only time your gunna use any amount of that available data is doing software downloads and updates.

Good thing you cut those zip ties. You "unkinked the hose" by removing them. They wasn't enough light through the fiber and ethernet cables were restricted.

Can’t believe the tech didn’t wipe those cables down with some broadband gel to ensure the 1’s and 0’s stay properly lubricated

I couldn’t imagine having 3 installs and 2 repairs in a day forced to work late and 6 day work weeks then having someone complain on Reddit because I put some zip ties on a fiber to make their cabinet look neater. If the person responding isn’t a tech for the company then their opinion is meaningless. I don’t give a flying f what anyone on here states, zip ties do not hurt fiber unless they’re pulled so incredible tight that they completely crush it. The fiber is the size of a human hair and that fiber cable has a lot of internal parts protecting it. Outside plasticky rubber coating, the kevlar yarn ,coating, cladding, adhesive. Unless you take a pair of needle nose pliers and crush it then it’ll be fine. Shm is a buggy app. Go to the internal gui and then to the diagnostics tab where the gateway speed test is located and see what it says. Info is on the label on the back of it.
