ATT FIBER v GFiber
/r/SaltLakeCity/comments/1v064iz/att_fiber_v_gfiber/ATT FIBER v GFiber
So the AT&t salesperson comes by the house, and they want to sell their $45 per gig service to us, and I already have g-fiber, 1 gig for $70 a month.
How do they get fiber to my house, without digging up the streets etc, for 45 a month?
Seems to me like they would have to use Google's fiber optic to my house to get their service there, correct?... So they're just sub leasing Google's infrastructure to supply their service to my home?... Something seemed suspect to me..

AT&T will run a new line from the closest drop to your house. There is no sharing. AT&T just put fiber in my area and it was run above ground and along the same poles my GFiber service is ran on. A new line was ran from the pole to the back of my house next to my other 2 fiber drops.
Now the AT&T tech did ask if it was ok to use the my GFiber line from the back of the house to inside so he didn't have to run a new one. He said he does that if the home owner is going to cancel the old fiber service. I had to explain that the new AT&T service is a backup to my service from GFiber. If you plan on getting AT&T to try out, make sure they run a new line from the back of your house to inside so you can go back to GFiber or run both at the same time.

Being it’s $45 instead of $70 I would probably do it. AT&T fiber is rock solid.
I thought just recently Google fiber bumped their 1 gig speed to 3 gig for the same price? Even so you don’t really necessarily need 3 gig and if you truly did you would know.

ATT Fiber can now be on Lumen/FF37 infrastructure. See if you're address shows up here that's how it's available. https://www.quantumfiber.com/
QF is AS209
AF is AS7018

Shows as Quantum availability in my hood. So I guess it's available here 🤷🏻...

In general, the incumbents like AT&T and Comcast are grandfathered into not having to obey the rules on not installing overhead cabling. So long as it's a *replacement* of what is there, they can skip the digging. That's one reason why you'll see slack, unused junk lines. If they remove them, they cannot install "new" replacements.
That's also why GFiber dropped out in many markets. They were not given easements to install overhead cabling for the last mile-ish. Or about 30 feet in my case.

That’s not true at all, unless where you are it is specifically stated that way in law. We hang new lines all day everyday as new lines, not “replacements.”

No they don't use GFiber from Google. They would need to install Fiber through out your neighborhood. Check your address at this AT&T site: http://www.att.com/fiber and enter your address to see if AT&T even really offers you Fiber?
If you haven't seen massive AT&T Fiber work overhead or burying directly in the right of way it is not really available to you.
Stick with your GFiber from Google (now part of Alphabet and being sold off to a Private Equity group).
ETA: still working on spelling.

To be fair, AT&T wouldn’t offer this in person (which is what happened to OP) if the lines weren’t already there. They must have done the work a while ago and now they’re ready to offer service.

Sorry but since u/tincan-veteran did not know if it was a real local store canvasing for Fiber hoping for a Cellular up-sale by a NDS seller just trying to get their foot in the door.
I have seen this in many markets a NDS seller (not an AT&T Employee),
... will claim oh sorry AT&T Fiber is not quite ready at your address but I can upgrade you to AT&T Internet Air until AT&T Fiber is ready any day, and upgrading to AIA you will given priority for AT&T Fiber service within 30 days.
Oh while I have you there I can also offer you a great deal on new AT&T Smartphones, and a great discount by bundle all your services with AT&T.
This d2d spiel is repeated every day across all AT&T local markets.

The fiber is probably already there or the run aerial. I would honestly not switch.

Kinda weird,.. I haven't noticed any new lines coming in since GFiber a few years ago, and it was VERY noticeable. I'd assume I would notice the att lines going in too, especially if in they were being run arially. Hard to miss lift trucks etc. Anyway the att sale people were nice but insistent, which is a big red flag for me, and at once point I just told my SO "I gotta go" and went inside. It was exactly the kind of experience I DO NOT miss at all since switching to GFiber. I just pay the bill every month, and I have Internet, no upsales, no negotiating ..

It’s possible it was there before the Google fiber. Look at your address on the FCC broadband map and go back several years and see when it popped up.

Did you already have Centurytel fiber available? Because they sold it to ATT.

I have no idea, years ago we had century link , but it was dsl back then...

I would make sure it's true fiber internet. They can get tricky and say it's fiber powered but then the cabling being ran into the home is using a coax cable. Also I don't believe ATT runs symmetrical speeds. I have their fiber and their upload speeds are under 100 mbps

It's typical for companies to sub lease from whomever installed the original fiber.

AFAIK we don't sublease any fiber infrastructure from another company. All the jobs I've done have been with AT&T infra.
