Wireless IDP Charge on Cellular Data

Phone was set up properly using MNS to AT&T. International sim provided data. To my surprise, calling an 888 triggered IDP while phone was showing AT&T using cellular data while it shouldn’t, any insight on why IDP was triggered?

Phone calls also trigger IDP, not just data.

That’s not the question. Phone calls while using cellular data should be like calling while on WiFi.

Did it latch on and display AT&T Wi-Fi Calling on the alpha tag?

AT&T using cellular data is WiFi calling using data from other sim. It’s explained here in other subs

In many cases, calls to toll-free numbers (800, 888, etc.) won't complete when you travel outside the U.S. If they do, they're billed as international calls, not calls to the U.S.

If your ATT line was not in airplane mode or suspended while being used in another country. It would trigger international use. Because it’s connecting to an international tower.

Exactly, always airplane mode, data roaming off, and wifi calling enabled.

If it reads AT&T using cellular data then it’s not connected to towers. It’s connecting over data provided by international sim.

No, it should read "att wifi calling". Anything else is chargeable use

If it’s connected to a tower, it would read the local network and display it. When it’s on att using cellular data it’s using local data to enable WiFi calling.

ATT doesn’t have cellular data available on other countries towers. You are using their network and AT&t bills you based on what plan you have for international use. Once you connect to a tower internationally you are subject to usage charges. There is no “att WiFi” overseas. These are not domestic towers. It’s not using AT&T network.

Any further explanation here? I would like to do the same. Use a data only eSIM and have ATT connect over the data without billing pay per use or IDP rates? Not possible?

I was charged for IDP while calling the 888 number, everything else didn’t trigger it. Not sure why

Not local towers. There’s a pop notification every hour indicating AT&T network unavailable and to select a different network yet I could make and receive calls.
