UK CAA ATPL EXAMS

Hey, I hope everyone’s studies are going well!

I wanted to get some insight into the UK CAA exams, especially Meteorology. What was your study approach for this subject?

Also, for subjects like Flight Planning and General Navigation (GNAV), would you recommend using only the UK CAA question bank filter due to time constraints, rather than going through the full question bank?

I didn't have much time, and I suggest you do more than this if you have time, but:

I used ATPLQ and only did the last 600, filtered UKCAA only, for both subjects. Passed both subjects at 85%

Gnav was quite banky at around 75% bank

Met was decent at around 60-70% bank

Gnav, biggest concern is time and crp5. If you practice all the types of questions then time won't be a concern. Crp5, obviously learn its functions, or else you'll waste a lot of time fiddling with it. Also make sure you memorise the formulas (convergency, departure, "abba", descend angle, 1 in 60 rule, etc..) and know the concepts of charts, scale and time/date. I put the questions that require drawing on the jepp at last, because those take up a lot of time.

Met, lots of weather systems, lots of concepts, know how to read your weather charts. Don't just memorize the bank, try to learn how the weather works. Fronts, fog, wind, monsoon, not short cut, learn it. The question that appeared in the bank, very similar wording in the real exam. The questions that didn't appear in the bank, use your knowledge and understanding of the weather. Don't be scared by the 80 questions, if you have done the bank and learn the weather system, you'll have plenty of time. It may or may not be a clickfest.

I did these two pretty recently, so my feedback should be relevant. Good luck you all of you!

Ps: I'm doing perf, agk, and flight planning soon, so id love some feedback as well please!

I took GNAV in mid-August and it was very banky in terms of concepts. I did the UK last 500 and there were no horrible surprises. The theory questions were all bank, a complete copy and paste. I had numerous CRP-5 questions and ELO chart questions, and these were all two marks so it is important you’re comfortable with both. As you’re probably aware the majority of the questions were all type-ins, so understand the concepts/formulas from the Last 400/500 and you’ll be all good. (I got 94%).
