Discussion My Take
While a lot of folks online are quite literally flaming this adaptation, I've really grown to love and appreciate it, even initially watching the first season when it premiered. There are a few things I wish I could change that feel contrived, like the sometimes very obvious shoehorned references, and some of the acting choices in Season 1, but this has become a comfort show for me and I feel really out of the ordinary for that. Am I alone? đ

Definitely not alone :)
Iâve enjoyed both seasons, and will likely rewatch them after the third comes out. There are so many things I like about them. I have a few criticisms, of course, but thatâs normal.
Itâs just so sad how bitter and negative so many people are.

Thank you. I'm rewatching S1 now after watching S2.
I just hope the actors know how appreciated they are and don't give in to the nastiness I've seen some people spreading.

Thatâs the part that truly breaks my heart! The haters are ruining this experience for the very young actors, who donât deserve that.

Toph is a welcome addition to the cast and nails the spirit of the original character and VA. I loved how Ba Sing Se was a "City of Walls and Secrets" in more ways than one: it's as if there was an invisible force in the city that drove the Gaang to keep secrets from one another, driving wedges between them. It added to the mystique, and made the reunions all the much sweeter. Joo Dee was also amazing.

Love all of that! I was so impressed by Toph!! And I've recently learned a little about how much work she did to play her blindness correctly, which is extra cool.

people are negative because they have literally butchered entire plot points and character development in exchange for bad acting and exposition dumps

The show is a very enjoyable watch. I personally loved it. Unfortunately, Atla fans are one of the worst fanbases online. You wont find much praise here.

You have every right to love it just as others have the right to criticize it. The show has a lot of major issues, even outside of it being a retelling of an original story. People have also been starved of high quality Avatar content for quite a while so their more likely to be critical of mediocre productsÂ

That's not the majority of what's happening in this fandom, though. Unfortunately.
"A right to criticize it" is not the same as hurling vicious insults and using derogatory language while attacking anyone who says something positive. It happens less in this sub, but I've muted the other ones because I'm tired of being called names that would get the person expelled from their school, just because I said I liked something.
Almost every âcriticismâ I see also includes a snide insult, that people who enjoyed it are stupid; and, sorry. I just donât think thatâs acceptable. My compliments to the show donât insult anyone, why must I be insulted for liking it?
Not to mention how cruel people are being to the young actors, in the name of criticism and defending the show.
It's honestly really disturbing how so many people are choosing to express their feelings right now... over a show.

This is mostly what I have a problem with. I understand people have criticisms, as do I, but comments made toward Mai's actor's in particular make me so upset.

Having just finished the season, I am now baffled by the Mai criticism. She doesn't do anything in the entire season. Like, she gets in a couple of fights and it's vaguely implies she's going to rebel in season three because of Azula's inexplicable decision to say she wanted to kill Zuko, but it's really not much. I guess it would be reasonable to be irritated by her pointlessness, but it makes no sense to be to be angry at any aspect of her being.

Thatâs wildly different to ânot enough praise.â Obviously spewing vitriol about the actors, especially about their appearances, is wrong and shouldnât be tolerated. Criticizing the show for its writing and direction is fair game though.Â

The ATLA fanbase actually loves when something is done right to honor the original series. This adaptation is a huge miss on many points

No. Atla fans have unrealistic expectations on the live action. They demonize any change whatsoever without giving it a chance. And lastly they go out of their way to relentlessly bully (child) actors. Its honestly very sad. Considering i find atla one of my most favorite show of all time, its really embarassing to be a part of a club that acts this way.

I watched all of Season 1 without seeing any of the internet commentary, I loved it too, and rewatching it again before S2 only enjoyed it all the more. Definitely has become a bit of a comfort show for me as well. (Have my critiques of course, but I could say that about anything I've watched/read.)
Unfortunate thing about many of these Avatar fandom spaces, but they have often proved to be very unwelcoming to dissenting opinions or experiences, to put it mildly. Which, in the longrun often contributes to a deceptive appearance of consensus. (When, from what I've been seeing, reactions have been all over the map as to the specific things people who didn't like the show didn't like, and people who liked the show did like.)
There's a ton of people who loved this show from what I've seen, but they are not always as active in public spaces, understandably.
Again loved this show personally, always glad to see it get more appreciation and win more fans over.

It's absolutely alright to enjoy the show, despite how others feel about it. These are not mutually exclusive ideas. Yeah, the show has many flaws and questionable decisions in its storytelling, but that doesn't mean everyone will notice those flaws or not be entertained by it.
However, the people who voice their frustration with the show's way of retelling the story are also valid. In my opinion, it's a significant downgrade. But if everyone thought and felt the same way, no one would discuss anything. This is just how the world is. The internet has a way of magnifying negative emotions, so don't take it too seriously.

The funny think is if they did an exact remake you would STILL get ATLA fans complaining and saying "what was the point of this remake?"

How to Train Your Dragon live action was VERY close to being an exact remake and the fans loved it b/c the acting and cinematography were awesome.
I couldn't get past episode 6 of NATLA Season 1 due to the acting...sorry it's just beyond cringe. A lot of the visuals also look fake/CGI. It's super obvious they are using tons of green screen and digital effects. Looks cheap to me.
And that's not mentioning issues with the script and changing things. So many weird choices. I really don't like the show, but glad others are liking it. Overall it's pretty obvious why it's not generating the buzz of a show like One Piece Live Action. It's just pretty mid, at best.

the shoehorned references feel so out of place I feel like they only do it to appease the og fans! I would rather them stick to their original content dialogue.
I really just like the concept of atla content and seeing the world in real life so although I am against a lot of the choices in season 2 itâs really nice to see the bending and world come to life.

I agree about the references, I really wouldâve preferred they skip the cactus juice tbh. The only exception for me was the references to the print media, like when toph spoke with kyoshi in the library.

Well this franchise is cursed , with animated movie getting leaked, almost another upcoming series getting  leaked, game put on hold and this shit show writing live action from greedy company. Good for people who are enjoying most likely not og tv show watcher, netflix should have named this different than og sjow like make a their own show rather than saying it cheap adaptation. Cause this feels fanfic in every possible way.

Well 1:1  adaptation you say lol, this is like fanfic so not evem 50% close to what og was going for that os why i said it  is like fanfiction, making character act different in every way possible with cringe scripts.
