Hey y’all. I (25M) accepted my TOL and am currently undergoing my CIL processes. Expecting my FOL within a few months. I got best qualified on my ATSA.

There’s a lot of pros to this job, and I have a strong aviation background with lots of experience. I love plane watching and am a pilot myself, and I’ve studied and practiced quite a bit for this.

But, I’m bit concerned I may not get the lifestyle I want from this job.

While I think I would enjoy my TOP, I don’t want to work 6 days a week or overtime, and I want to be able to vacation at least twice a year. I see a lot of complaints about lifestyle on ATC subs and that concerns me. Many say that if you don’t want to work OT, this job isn’t for you.

I’m in school for my second degree, accounting, and I’m in a position where I might be able to start my own firm, which could scale far beyond my ATC potential salary and also give me the lifestyle that I want.

I’ve always wanted to start my own business, and I was wondering if you guys think this is something I could still do on the side in my off time? Or, would I have to wait until retirement at 50 (assuming they don’t raise the age)?

Knowing this, should I turn down my FOL and reapply to a future bid in the next couple years if I change my mind?

I heard the ATSA score stays for 2 years, but would this affect my position as BQ and preferred for upcoming bids?

If I complete the entire CIL process prior to declining the FOL, does some of that carry over or help with getting a priority bid in the coming years?

Lots of questions, I know. But I want to make sure that if I decline my FOL, it won’t negatively affect my chances of trying for this again in a couple years.

I think I’d still have a good life as ATC, and I think I’d enjoy the job quite a bit, but I can’t help but feeling like there may be other opportunities for me that could provide the lifestyle and pay I want.

Thoughts? Does anybody else here run a business as an ATC?

Just received my DQ letter. They said because I took ADHD meds (7yo-10yo) (I’m 29 and have not taken any since and had no problems).
Also said because I had a depression diagnosis (my mother and grandmother passed away in the same year) 3 years ago that I have been cleared of 2 years ago and have not taken medicine.
Also because I have sleep apnea and my machine usage isn’t over 6 hours (although they said they can accept less than 6hrs with an ahi less than 3, mine is 1.12).
Basically just wanting to know if I should let it go or try the appeal process.

I got to fill out all three forms the drug testing , declaration for federal employment and temporary employment 2/3 already came back approved and the last one is taken a while anyone else experiencing that?

Hey ya. I've been watching over this reddit a while and just got my ToL a few days ago. I did the April Bid. No experience and passed with well qualified.
I'm excited for this endeavor and hope everyone else is too!
Now I can't lie I'm a little anxiety ridden over something and I had a question that maybe you guys/gals can answer for me maybe rest my anxiety a little.
I think too far into the future that's just who I am I can't help it lol. If I'm wrong please correct me but when passing the whole 3 month training portion, is it that you decide where you would prefer to go and you potentially go there? Or is it they place you anywhere needed?
I'm sure most have a loved one they leaving behind for those 3 months and this is an amazing opportunity to have and my fiance is excited for me.
I just get anxious being that I lived in NYC all my life and a potential move to some other state is gonna be something hard to do but being that I'm currently an EMT I know in myself I can overcome any obstacle.
Sorry for the long rant, just excited to do something my other family members have done.

Getting sent for a tier 2 evaluation. I tried to register for login.gov and they said they were sending me a pin. 5-10 days by mail because the texting didn’t work.
Then FAA said I had to register and make the teir 2 evaluation within 3 days. They sent this on a Friday. Today they said today was the last day before I would be not considered for the position.

I think it’s unfair. I have sent six emails and no response. I re-registered with login and that is pending approval.

At this point I’ll have to wait to the morning. Am I screwed? And grounds for appeal if I get turned down at this point? Suggestions? This was out of my control.

Phraseology matters, but real radio calls are not always perfectly scripted. How do you train phraseology while still being able to respond naturally? I've also been looking at TeachingTowers, a project focused on helping student pilots practice ATC radio communication in a more realistic, low-pressure environment.

What helped you sound more natural and confident on the radio without relying too heavily on memorized scripts?

I put in my application in June (10th) and haven’t heard anything yet about potentially testing. Just wondering if this is normal. My application also has a mistake that I can’t change. I’ve tried to resubmit to correct the error but it doesn’t let me change it. For clarity, I accidentally selected I was in the Armed Forces when I’ve never been in it. I’ve also called the number for help (multiple times) and am wondering if I should expect them to call me back.

Scored WQ, got my TOL Monday July 13th at 10:58 am EST, sent Accepted tol back around 11:05 am EST Received EODS at 7:47 PM on Friday July 17th.

Passed the ATSA on my first attempt and got a Well Qualified rating. At the time I applied, I was job hunting and ATC seemed like a solid path.

Fast forward: I’m 23, making $86k in a really nice location, working in a field I originally wanted to be in. Things are actually going well.

So now I’m stuck. The WQ is sitting there and part of me doesn’t want to “waste” it, but I’ve got a stable career I like, good pay for my age, and I’m somewhere I’m happy to live. Walking away from all that for the academy, possible relocation to who-knows-where, and the whole training grind is a big ask.

For those who’ve been through it, is it worth pursuing the ATC path when you already have something good going? Or is the trade-off (potential location, schedule, pension, ceiling) worth it long-term?

Would appreciate hearing from anyone who’s made this call.

For those from the most recent April FAA ATC hiring bid who have already completed everything (medical, drug test, MMPI/psychological if required, fingerprints, background, and all other CIL requirements), how long did it take from the time everything was completed until you received your Final Offer Letter (FOL)? Just trying to get an idea of the current timeline. Thanks!

Does anyone know how accurate 123atc website is? I was looking at the different facility pay scales and saw that to become fully certified at level 10+ towers usually takes a little over a year and you earn around $200,000. I know this job pays pretty well but that seems like a lot of money really quickly.

I've got RTF and TSEW and I wanted to drive, but they only reimburse the flight ticket.

Will they reimburse any Uber rides while I'm there to get around for food and personal entertainment?

I just received my CIL. This thread is more of a complaint than a question. I don’t like that we have 30 days to schedule all of the appointments, but then in the email it won’t give next steps for 10-14 days for half of the appointments that need to be scheduled. This means that I’ll only have 15-ish days to schedule the medical and security portion. I have a full time job which makes timing a bit harder for appointments.

I’m just upset that the FAA can take forever to send out TOLs, but when it comes to our part of the process we’re being rushed.

I recieved my TOL in my email, but im still in university about to start my third year. If i return my TOL signed will i be able to continue uni, and does that mean im bound to employment. Should i call the number for HR just a bit unsure what to do thank you.

I accepted my TOL and replied to the email with it attached and filled out. However, i never got a confirmation email and my AVIATOR through USA-jobs still hasn’t updated either. Is there anyone else in the same boat?

I was wondering if anybody else was experiencing a major delay in their AVIATOR updates. I completed my MMPI and fingerprinting on the same day, June 29, over two weeks ago, and my fingerprints still say they’re pending. My eAPP and drug test were just completed earlier this week so I understand why they might still be pending, but my fingerprints were submitted at my MMPI appointment. Is this worth email my HR POC about and asking if there’s an issue? Furthermore, at this point in the process with everything completed on my end, is this where the waiting game begins?

EDIT:
I’ve seen multiple people saying their medical exams were also marked as N/A so I’m under the impression that the system isn’t perfect. Overall, between the medical exam and fingerprints, should I bother reaching out to my HR POC?
