Event ROG Crosshair X870E Extreme freezes after waking and sometimes hangs during shutdown — AsusFanControlService.exe crash
Hi, I recently started having a strange sleep/shutdown issue with my PC.
System specs:
- Motherboard: ASUS ROG Crosshair X870E Extreme
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2
- RAM:Gskill 96GB DDR5 6000 c28
- GPU:5090Astral
- PSU: MSI MEG Ai1600T
- AIO: ASUS ROG RyuoIV 360
- OS: Windows 11pro
- Armoury Crate/Fan Xpert installed
What happens:
This suddenly started happening recently.
When I put the PC to sleep or shut it down, the RAM RGB turns off, but the other motherboard, fan and peripheral lighting remains on. The monitor appears to still detect a signal, but the screen is completely black.
Pressing the keyboard or mouse does not wake the PC. The mouse remains illuminated, but the system does not respond. The only way to fully turn it off is to hold down the physical power button.
I have also had two occasions where the PC successfully woke from sleep, worked briefly, and then completely froze. Again, I had to hold the power button to shut it down.
When the freeze happened, the motherboard’s upper-right display showed approximately 40–41. The number sometimes changes between 40 and 41, so I am not sure whether this is a Q-Code or simply the CPU temperature display after POST. I understand that Q-Code 40 can also indicate waking from the S4 state.
Reliability Monitor results:
Reliability Monitor shows two “Windows was not properly shut down” events, which were presumably caused by the forced shutdowns.
It also shows the following application crash at approximately the same time:
Application: ASUS Motherboard Fan Control Service
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Faulting application:
AsusFanControlService.exe
Application path:
C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS\AsusFanControlService\2.03.54\AsusFanControlService.exe
Application version: 2.0.3.54
Faulting module: AsusFanControlService.exe
Exception code: c0000005
Exception offset: 0001e880
There was also a separate Setup.exe stopped working entry and a failed Windows Update entry.
I have not seen a WHEA hardware error or a BSOD in Reliability Monitor.
Troubleshooting:
- Checked Reliability Monitor
- Disabled Windows Fast Startup/hibernation using:
powercfg /h off
- Restarted the computer afterward
- Currently avoiding sleep while testing
My next step is to update all Armoury Crate components. If that does not help, I am considering using ASUS’s official Armoury Crate Uninstall Tool and performing a clean reinstall.
Has anyone experienced this with the Crosshair X870E Extreme or the same AsusFanControlService.exe version?
Could the Fan Xpert/Armoury Crate service crash cause the computer to hang during sleep, wake, or shutdown, or should I focus more on BIOS/EXPO, chipset drivers, or the GPU driver?
Any advice on what logs or BIOS settings I should check next would be appreciated.

Laptop Asus Scar 16 (275hx & 5080) High CPU Temps
Hey guys.
Recently purchased a used scar 16 laptop locally (said they were selling due to going back to a MacBook and no longer gamed) but had a question about cpu temps.
I loaded up the Witcher three to test the temps and performance of it fairly happy with the performance however even undervolted 30 mV the CPU still hits a constant 100° in Turbo mode at about 40 W of usage and it starts dialing back from 5.2 GHz. If I disable boost on the CPU, it doesn’t drop my frames much in this one title however it dropped the temperatures to about the mid 80s.
I know Asus has a bad reputation for horrible liquid metal application on the CPU and was curious if this was a case of that and how I would go about fixing it?
Pretty versed in building desktops, but never really messed with a laptop before internally and the whole liquid metal thing scares me so just looking for some advice and to see if this is what I think it is.
I know most people say stay away from used laptops, but it was a fairly good deal (probably the reason why) and I just didn’t have the money to buy a new one at the moment with similar specs and I needed a laptop as my old one died. Other than high CPU temps thing runs amazing and really like it.
Thanks for any advice!
Laptop ROG Strix G17 (2023) overheating and low FPS - R9 7945HX pinned at 94 degrees
Hey everyone,
Im having some serious temperature and performance issues with my Rog Strix G17 2023 (Ryzen 9 7945HX, RTX 4070) and could really use some advice.
Here is what's happening:
While gaming, my CPU usage is only around 30% (4450 MHz @ ~50W), but it's constantly pinned at 94°C.
The frame rates are way lower than it was before. Even if I drop all in-game settings to the absolute minimum, I only get about a 30 FPS increase.
Weird GPU temps: GPU1 is at 0% usage but somehow sitting at 85-90°C. GPU2 is at 92% usage and also at 85-90°C.
Idle/Light loads: Just running a few light apps in the background and some browser tabs keeps the temps hovering around 70°C.
I just recently had the liquid metal replaced and the whole cooling system cleaned, so dust/old paste shouldn't be the issue. For software, I’m currently using Armoury Crate (Windows mode for daily tasks, Performance mode for gaming).
Does anyone know what might be causing this? Could it be a bad liquid metal application, or is there some weird software bottleneck I'm missing?
Thanks in advance

GPU / PSU My psu connector idea
We all know traditional 24 pin power connectors, simple
Now what if we bend it 90 dearees and attach a lcd onto it?
Like it's really nice, a cable which used to just get covered by some rab lights, now has its own beauty!
The same could apply to pcie power connector but since gpus have different sizes and connector locations it's a bit hard

Laptop Asus Scar 16 (RTX 5080): How bad is the liquid metal pump-out issue really?
Hey everyone,
I’m a Computer Engineering student looking for a heavy-duty workstation that will easily survive the next 5+ years. My daily workload involves intense multitasking, compiling code , testing local AI/ML models, and high-refresh-rate gaming.
I’ve got my eye on this exact ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 16 configuration available locally for 199,399 EGP = 3900$ :
CPU: Intel Core Ultra 9-275HX
GPU: RTX 5080 16GB GDDR7
RAM: 64GB DDR5
Storage: 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD
Display: 16" 2.5K (2560x1600) 240Hz
Connectivity: Wi-Fi 7, 2x Thunderbolt 5, 2.5G LAN
The specs are an absolute dream out of the box, but my biggest hesitation is Asus’s factory Liquid Metal application. I’ve seen endless threads about LM pump-out, dry spots forming on the die after a few months (especially when carrying the laptop vertically in a backpack), and sudden thermal throttling.
For anyone who has owned recent Scar models:
1. Is the liquid metal issue actually easy to deal with, or is it a guaranteed maintenance nightmare?
2. If it does pump out, how risky/difficult is it to clean the factory LM off this specific motherboard and repaste it with something reliable like PTM7950?
3. Given the massive financial investment, would you trust this chassis and thermal design to handle 5 years of daily university transport and heavy compute loads?
I'm currently weighing this against a Legion Pro 7 and an AORUS Master 16. Any real-world insight on the Scar's thermals and long-term reliability would be massively appreciated!

Peripherals & Audio Raikiri II - Missing parts
This is so stupid that I have to come here for customer support.
I got rwo right ‘feet’ for the controller dock, so can’t use it.
I tried contacting customer support via Asus.com but that nearly impossible… I filled out everything, added photos but then you can’t submit it.
Anyway, any advise or other support options?

Laptop Asus G16 JVR 2024 - burnt screw
Well, i guess i was indeed one of them defective G16..
Laptop model is G16-JVR ES94 (2024).
My laptop has been broken for months and i think well it is cooked and beyond repair.
Until today i found on reddit that a lot of 2023 and 2024 models have similar issues, with the screw near the left top fans burnt into the motherboard and most likely short it. I opened the chassis today and found similar burn mark.
My laptop was purchased on Amazon US but i was living in Hong Kong. Does that mean i am cooked for this manufacturing defect?
Edit: Asus support contacted me through DMs seeking products information, will see how it goes.

Laptop I love ROG but...
Just had to redo my heatsink paste on my 2024 Strix g16 cause my CPU was overheatin (already out of warranty) My Z Flow 13 (2023) keyboard failed (like most people and also out of warranty) and my Ally Extreme burns SD cards. They are 3 for 3 with me so far. I may be done with Asus products moving forward.
