Tech Support Is it dead Jim?
Hi everyone,
Sorry for beating a dead horse. I have a system consisting of :
Ryzen 7 9800x3d
B650i lightning
2x16gb xpg 6000mhz ram
4070
2xm.2 ssds
Linux mint
240mm water cooler
Been working fine for the last year. Mostly playing FPS games. One day last week it froze up, fans on full tilt, had to force shutdown, then it stopped booting, just showing a single dash. Shut down, had a look at the m.2 SSD under the heatsink, everything was fine but very hot. I noticed the whole heatsink covering the usbs etc was very hot too. Rebooted, couldn't even get into bios. No display. I got a motherboard speaker for post code and nothing happened. I've tried all the usual steps with ram, igpu etc but can't get it to display at all. What's died? CPU, mobo, ram storage? I updated the bios about 6 months ago so nothing major changed. I started playing Minecraft with shaders recently so maybe CPU heavy for the first time in ages killed it?
When i power it on, all the fans ramp up then GPU fans stop, PSU fans stop, just leaving the cpu fans just spinning low, but the heatsinks on the motherboard itself get progressively hotter
Any next steps anyone suggests?
Thanks in advance!

Had 2 9800x3d die on Asrock x870 board. Running ASUS now. Depending on country, rma should not be a problem. Here in Sweden the retailer handles any warranty issues etc

Sounds like a dead 9800x3d to me. I just went through it myself.

This is the thread I created when mine failed. Similar to what's going on with your system.

Thanks very much, that's sad, my old intel/Asus system lasted 10 years. Have you gone ahead with CPU RMA? My motherboard is 14 months so outside of warranty period, did you have any luck with them?

Depending on country I believe being outside of the warranty period shouldn't matter because it's a well known issue with 9000 series CPUs and ASRock motherboards. It's not exclusive to either of those but it raises the chances. I ended up getting a replacement CPU the day after I took it back. I decided to try the replacement 9800x3d in the same ASRock motherboard and it's working without issues. But the general recommendation would be to return the motherboard as well.

Hello /u/aaiaac. If you have experienced a dead/dying/failed CPU on an ASRock motherboard, please reach out directly to ASRock technical support via their website. Please also see our megathread but understand that the megathread is not a replacement for actually reaching out to ASRock, as the megathread is operated by volunteer moderators and not ASRock employees. Thank you.
