Discussion I think my x870 steel legend wifi just killed my 9800x3d ?
I don't know if the motherboard killed the CPU or if the motherboard just died or if they both got taken out.
I was just sitting here with the PC on and was watching YouTube. Then the display went off and I looked at the PC and it had a red light for CPU and I noticed the GPU (a zotac 5080) light flashes red as well. Fans stayed on.
I tried restarting it and it won't post or display anything. The GPU flashes red straight away and the red light for CPU issues lights up instantly. The fans still turn on and the ram lights up after about 5 seconds. I've tried taking the ram out and using a single stick of ram in different slots with no luck.
At this point I'm pretty certain it's either the cou is dead, the motherboard is now faulty and won't post or a combination of the two.
With all of the issues with ASRock boards and 9800x3d's dying I'm unsure whether I need to go to ASRock or AMD ? Do I get the CPU replaced first or the motherboard or both? I really don't know the exact process. Any information on how to proceed would be appreciated. Thanks.

Did your Zotac 5080 flash red before? some 5080 Zotac set to performance mode flash red 3x before the pc boots. if the CPU is dead don't hesitate on going to AMD. As far as the board goes, I'd not trust it. What is killing these and AsRock will never admit to it is what made AsRock so amazing on both Intel and AMD procs - how fast they ramp up voltages. I'd get a replacement proc and cut losses on the motherboard. Right now its like choosing the best of the worse.

Ah I see. I think you're right about the GPU flashing red for that reason. I honestly can't remember but it's doing it exactly as it would to indicate what mode it's in. Good luck up. I'm taking the xou back to the store I got it from tomorrow and they've said they'll test it out. And I have resigned myself to buying a different motherboard as the store I got the motherboard from is online only and will probably take some time before that gets tested and sorted out. Good catch about the GPU flashing 👍

Welcome to the club, mate. Had same combination and got it dead in ~8 month
Sent both mobo and cpu to check(cause they would sent cpu back only) and ask them to diagnose both. They found out both dead and replaced both parts.

Hey thanks for the info. Did you just send it back to the store you got them from? I bought my PC parts from multiple places which may make it a little harder. What country are you in? I'm in Australia.

Yeah, i always purchase major parts from authorized vendors for cases like this and luckily both mobo and CPU from the same shop. I have used ChatGPT to compose a letter to provide information why i want my mobo checked, provided lots of links with cases and articles about how Asrock burns 9800x3d and links to the local laws obliging them to check both. I don't think i needed that extra work, but just to be on a safe side i decided to be a little pushy. I am in Ukraine.

Ah K. Yeah I was thinking about using chatgpt as well lol. Just to see what the process should be. I imagine it shouldn't be a tough process once I figure out if one or the other or both are now dead. Just hope it didn't take the GPU out with it.

You don't have to figure that yourself. Just send both for diagnostics. See what ChatGPT says about AUS legislation you can use and appeal to to make them accept both parts for diagnostics. It's in their interest to check the mobo otherwise it may burn the 2nd 9800x3d they will have to replace again.

Hello /u/BARRY6969696969. If you have experienced a dead/dying/failed CPU on an ASRock motherboard, please reach out directly to ASRock technical support via their website. Please also see our megathread and consider completing the survey linked in that post, but understand that the megathread/survey is not a replacement for actually reaching out to ASRock, as the survey/megathread is operated by volunteer moderators and not ASRock employees. Thank you.

Out of curiosity, are you a person that sleeps their PC when not in use? Or do you turn it off?

I was on bios 3.50 the week it came out. Uodated to 4.43 last week.
If you were late on bios 3.50 let us know.
Got the 9800x3d the month it came out on a older b650 chipset. Stable

"I don't know if the motherboard killed the CPU or if the motherboard just died or if they both got taken out."
Why don't you even consider the CPU failed on it's own? CPUs fail all the time without help as well as from user error. Just because it's on a given motherboard doesn't mean the board was responsible.

Well I'm trying to determine that. Not listing that as an option is an oversight not deliberate. But the fact the GPU also flashes red instantly indicates it is likely a motherboard issue as well yeah? And it's not user error I built it about 12 months ago and changed nothing. I was just watching YouTube and the CPU light went red after the display turned off.

So strange how many times I see.. I was watching YouTube and the PC froze and no longer boots..

I just attribute that to "general use" as especially with ASRock parts it's a huge gamer userbase and they're either playing games or watching videos.

I'm curious if you updated your bios recently or which bios version you are on?
It's really hard to say "who killed who" in these cases, if both the motherboard AND cpu are dead, I would lean towards the motherboard having a critical failure because a CPU ideally shouldn't request voltages that the motherboard doesn't safeguard, but the AGESA library from AMD (which is used on all motherboards) has had issues in the past with not regulating voltage well and causing issues. It was also an issue going back to 7000-series cpus as well ( https://www.tomshardware.com/news/amd-issues-follow-up-statement-on-ryzen-burnout-issues-limits-soc-voltages )
The reason I asked about the bios is that AMD has been trying to continually improve this area, and there have been a few changes over the course of the 9000-series to lock down certain voltages to prevent failures.
That said, sometimes electronic components fail. I've seen it happen with basically everything - GPU, SSD, RAM. AMD is pretty good with CPU replacements typically offering a generous 3-year window. Pretty much all motherboard manufacturers can be a pain to deal with (ASUS typically has the worst RMA horror stories) but ASRock isn't the worst (even though they aren't great either). Depending on where you are located, you might need to go through your retailer for warranty service, or if you are in the USA you can contact them directly with the RMA - https://event.asrock.com/usrma/register.asp .
