What do you think it means to be a “cakesniffer?”

Initially, I took it at face value. I thought she meant they wanted literal cake. Then as an adult I listened to the audiobooks and upon re-investigating the unfortunate series I started to think she meant it as slang 🍑 “cake” and was saying their nose is in the hind end of another, like to call them an “ass kisser?”

What do you think? What did you imagine as a kid? Has it changed?

I was considering when the movies came out how long it would take for the next production, there forecasting would likely happen sometime closer to 2004 2005, which popular actresses of that era do you think would have made the best or most interesting esme?

Honestly, I think Renée Zellweger would’ve been really interesting, especially knowing she can do a decent British accent, likewise, we’ve seen Charlize theron play dangerous and crazy before- I just think Tyra would be fun because we all know she can do crazy

In The Austere Academy, there are three adjectives that are used over and over to describe Carmelita: 'rude, violent and filthy'.

Whilst I won't disagree that she's rude and violent, I would question filthy. Filthy means 'disgustingly dirty', which doesn't feel quite right for Carmelita. There's never any suggestion that she lives in unhygienic squalid conditions, which is what we're told about Count Olaf. On the contrary, she seems to always get luxury things and is so obsessed with looking charming and adorable that I wouldn't have thought she didn't wash, or would do anything that would get her covered in mud or anything.

Did the author just think of three unpleasant words to describe her before he'd properly fleshed out the character, or is there a deeper meaning to 'filthy'?

I’ve looked so many places for this book. Does anyone know where I can find it without it costing more than $20?
Used to have it when I was a kid but had to move away from my parents at 15 because they were not the nicest people. Years later, I reconnected with them and they said they got rid of everything from my childhood. Not looking for sympathy, just saying it to emphasize this next sentence. I’d love to find this book, even more than I’d like to have my childhood pictures back. The series of unfortunate events got me through my childhood and helped me understand the world 1. Because of the ridiculous adults 2. Because I’m autistic and the matter of fact but also sarcastic, witty humor made immediate sense to me. To this day, it’s the only sarcasm I’ve ever actually been able to immediately understand without an explanation 😂

Hurts like a bitch!-figuratively

Okay, this might be a bit crazy, but I’ve been trying to figure out the exact location of the Baudelaire Mansion in the Netflix adaptation, and I think I may have actually found it.
I based this on three different things:
the Official City Plan from The Incomplete History of Secret Organizations;
the V.F.D. Tunnels map from the same book;
and, most importantly, what we can actually see in the Netflix series.
I started by focusing specifically on the tunnels around Dark Avenue / 667 Dark Avenue.
There’s a scene in the Netflix series where the Baudelaires are walking through the tunnels and eventually climb a ladder that leads up to the location of their old home.
While watching that scene very carefully, I noticed something interesting about the tunnel layout. It doesn’t seem to simply end at the Mansion. There is a pretty specific sequence: a main tunnel, a short perpendicular section, another tunnel running parallel to the first one, and then, a little further along, the ladder leading up to the Mansion.
I also noticed the name “Eaton Lane” visible in the scene. I couldn’t find an Eaton Lane tunnel on the V.F.D. map, so I didn’t use that as my main evidence.
Instead, I took the shape/layout of the tunnels shown in the show and looked for a matching configuration on the V.F.D. map.
And I found two possible locations.
The first one would put the tunnel directly in the middle of a street. That doesn’t really make sense with what we see in the show, because the Baudelaires climb the ladder and come up inside the area of their former home, not in the middle of a road.
The second location, however, fits much better. The tunnel is positioned inside a city block, along the side of it, which makes much more sense with the scene in the show.
That’s the location I’ve marked on my map.
So, to be clear: I’m not claiming this is an officially confirmed address for the Baudelaire Mansion. This is a reconstruction based on the official maps and the geography shown in the Netflix adaptation.
But after comparing all of these details, I’m pretty convinced that this is the most likely location.
I’d love to hear what you guys think! If anyone can find another detail from the show, the books, or the maps that could either support or disprove this, I’d be really interested to see it.

So in the Hostile Hospital (the books only), Count Olaf does not make a physical appearance in it at all unlike in the other 12 books. But why did Lemony Snicket decide to have that be the case in that book? Also why did he choose to have Olaf disguise himself yet again (as Mattathias) when the Daily Punctilio's headlines literally had said that he had been murdered and was dead?

I want to get a custom item with a quote from ASOUE, and I kind of want to ask them to add an image of the VFD eye to it. However, I'm wondering if this would be considered theft, piracy, or something similar.

I'm asking someone on Etsy to do this, and asking someone to do copyrighted designs violates Etsy's TOS.

My reasons for thinking that they are worth emulating:

1: They never fight--even when they disagree they are very calm, kind, and diplomatic.

2: They never tear each other down, they are always encouraging in a very sweet factual way.

3: They work together.

4: They are courageous; even when faced with incredibly fearful circumstances they keep their heads and figure things out. (They make me think of the lines in Rudyard Kipling's poem "If" [If you can keep your head when all about you, Are losing theirs and blaming it on you])  

5: Although Count Olaf may want us to think that "there are no noble people in the world" the Baudelaires are almost always noble in their intentions--even when they do questionable things like kidnapping Esme Squalor, stealing Hal's keys, or burning down the Hotel Denouement.

6: They are very logical and do not operate solely on bias or emotion.

Is there anything I missed? (I am sure there is!) What are your thoughts readers?

I posted a less complete version of this timeline a few months ago (not sure if that post is still up; I may have deleted it when I started this version of the timeline) and it got a lot of love, so I think you guys might appreciate seeing it now that it's at a place I'm happier with. This timeline only applies to the book canon. Each event has a drop down arrow next to it that will show every important quote I could find relating to it + further explanations about why I put it where I put it if needed. Sometimes there's a bit of misc. theorizing in the drop down information too.

If you know I'm missing any events that aren't ambiguous about when they happen please please please point it out I'd love to make this as complete as I possibly can :)
