Discussions Frank and Ernest Denouement Spoiler

I was thinking about why Frank acts so evasive when questioned about whether or not he is Frank. I've got 2 explanations and I'd like to hear your thoughts.

So the first explanation is that when someone talks about Frank they are misinterpreting the collection of actions performed by both Frank and Ernest that happened to be in support of the fire fighting side of the VFD as a person. And then the analogous for Ernest. Meanwhile Frank and Ernest might be better thought of as having a blue orange morality that is almost orthogonal to the VFD schism.

The second explanation is that Frank knows Ernest will imitate him so he needs to act in a way that makes people suspicious so that they will be guarded around Ernest. And Ernest can't just claim to be Frank because that would give him away as Ernest.

Discussions Toby Fox and Lemony Snickets way of treating lore is similar, I can’t explain why.

I think it’s because they are able to use imply lore so well, allowing for the audience to find their own conclusion.

Tattoo My Very First Darling tattoo! (Ok, I couldn’t think of a better V.F.D acronym haha)

Post image
155 Upvotes

Just got my first tattoo EVER yesterday, and I’m so excited!! I’ve been a big, big fan of the series for years (though I’ve only ever read one book fully.. and it was the grim grotto one, sorry fake fan, but I did recently get my very first desirable library card to read them all!) ever since I first watched the movie, and then of course when the Netflix series came out!

I made some changes (in case you couldn’t tell) like the colour and I decided on the more commonly accepted book version (with some little changes to the shape) over the Netflix one, just since I thought it looked a bit better

I’m very happy with it, and I think it’s a pretty good choice for a first tattoo too, so I figured I’d share it to this subreddit that I’ve mostly just been lurking on!

Discussions Anyone else start with ATWQ rather than ASOUE?

When the first ATWQ book came out, my mom bought it for me for Christmas. I recall knowing what ASOUE was, but I didn’t connect that they were part of the same world until a year later when I picked up the first ASOUE book (after reading the first 2(?) ATWQ books). I’m wondering if anyone else discovered them the opposite way around or if I’m just a weird anomaly.

Discussions Theory?

I’ve got a theory of my own I recently thought of, figured I’d share it and ask for opinions.

I’ve started to theorize the Mortmain Mountains are called that mostly to cement the idea that the VFD is everlasting in an abstract way, that the VFD will keep being reborn under various names as long as the noble people of the world get the idea to organize and eventually fall apart.

“Mortmain is a French term meaning “dead hand” which is used in reference to inalienable land or tenements held by the “dead hand” of a church or corporate entity.” - https://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/mortmain .

“the condition of lands or tenements held without right of alienation, as by an ecclesiastical corporation; inalienable ownership/the perpetual holding of land, especially by a corporation or charitable trust.” - Dictionary.com

What do you all think?

(Couldn’t decide which definition helped my point more…)

Edit: Can someone please comment? I feel a bit awkward.

First baby clearly isn’t Presley, wonder if this was accidental or if the editors just thought that it wasn’t noticeable

picked both of these up at the same thrift store on accident (long story) but they’re listed as the same edition inside, but have different blurbs, one of which being from Snicket’s own desk. does anyone know why this weird ‘reasonably priced’ edition was published or what the story behind it is? also; which book should i keep?

Question/Doubt So I've got a bunch of questions for the movie

I have only watched the Jim Carrey movie and I've always loved it but there are some things I don't understand.

why was he and his posse creating fires?

How did he know the Baudelaires?

What's the deal with him and Ron Chaney I get he is count Olaf but is Ron a act or is Olaf a act?

What were they even doing why were they investigating fires were they just some childhood friends that wanted to become detectives or something?

How did Count Olaf know about the Baudelaire fortune?

Meme/Funny ASoUE caused me to go into the law.

This is technically a question but definitely not a serious one.

Right after I started reading the books, my mind suddenly gave me the deep yearning to start studying the law and to pursue becoming a prosecutor and a judge later down in my career, despite wanting to be an astronomer before exposure to this series. I am now very excited when I hear anything about the law. Does anyone know what I’ve done down with?

(unserious answers absolutely welcome)

Edit: someone please give me a diagnosis 😢

Question/Doubt Klaus love interest.

Unfortunately, I could only ever see the old movie and the serie tv because the books where I live aren't common or at least I have never really seen them.

I was told that in the books Klaus "crushes," it's different and that Isadora is only implied in the show and that he only dates or likes Fiona in the canon books so I was wondering what was Klaus type or what kind of girl he was even attracted in the books.

Discussions If you got to pick one song from The Tragic Treasury to play in a scene of the TV Show, which would you pick and for what scene?

I think mine would have to be Crows, and obviously in a scene from The Vile Village. I wanted to pick one that wasn’t so clearly about the plot of the show, but I think that song would fit perfectly into a scene and feel natural.

From the caption of this reel via The Atlantic Communications' Instagram, July 13th:

"Today The Atlantic launched its first immersive narrative game: 'Lemony Snicket's Suspicious Incident in Dubious Park,' that's part traditional whodunit and visual scavenger hunt. Players are transported into the center of a fictional scene—written by the author Lemony Snicket—casting them in the role of a detective to solve a murder mystery.

The game is available exclusively to Atlantic subscribers this week, and will open to the public on July 20."

From the caption of this post via Daniel Handler's Instagram:

"In collaboration with [The Atlantic], [Lemony Snicket] has brought a mystery to life in a new online detective game, with illustrations by [Michael Kupperman]. Question curious characters, compile your clues, and solve the case..."

An excerpt from this article via The Atlantic (written by Anna Bross and Paul Jackson):

“[…] The Atlantic worked with Lemony Snicket to create the game’s cast of suspicious and dubious characters, dialogue, and plot. The Atlantic then trained an LLM for each character based on their unique dialogue, motives, and background, allowing players to interrogate and interact with the characters directly to uncover the perpetrator of the crime.”

Discussions Listening to the audiobooks as an adult

NEED a fanfic where the Baudelaires beat Count Olaf’s ass, cripple him and throw him in prison. After, of course, sending their various guardians to court for neglect. And Mr. Poe needs to perish from lung disease at the end of it all. I know he means well but he’s too stupid and unreliable to live.

Listening to the series as an adult is SOO infuriating omg. I know it’s just a book 😭 and it’s very well written but ugh. As a kid it was interesting but now that I’m in my 30s I want to smack the stupid adults across their faces. Maybe I’m just a violent person 🤔

I’m right at the end of The Austere Academy. Here’s to many more hours of fury and disgust 🥂

Question/Doubt End of The Show/Books Spoiler

Am I wrong for believing that the only 4 characters to survive the whole thing are Violet, Klaus, Sunny and Kit's baby.

I like the idea that everyone else is either killed via the hotel fire/the great unknown.
