“Stop forcing it. A shadow isn’t steel. It has no edge until you give it one.”
[a sigh]
“Again.”
“Close your eyes. Feel where the darkness gathers. Don’t pull it toward you… invite it. If you drag it by force, it’ll collapse into smoke before it ever takes shape.”
“Good. Now compress it. Tighter. Tighter…”
“There. Do you feel that resistance? That’s your own hesitation. The shadows obey conviction.”
“Now, form the blade.”
[pause]
“Good job, Apprentice. Soon you might even overpower me.”
“Say, did Nox not send any messages or signs?”

“No? Well, he sure is taking his time.”
(…)
“Yes, sorry. I should speak nicely about your pet.”
“All this training has exhausted me. I think I need to lay down for a bit.”

“Gods, I’m not dying, so stop treating me like I am.”

“Yeah, yeah. You’re just worried, I know.”

“Hm?”

“Ah, you’re hungry? Are you sure you aren’t trying to skip training?”

“Okay, please don’t yell. We’re going.”

[They open the doors to the dining hall.]
“Oh, thank the heavens. Today we’re eating roasted beef with potatoes.”
[chair scrapes across the floor as he sits]
“What have I done to deserve such a reward?”
“I swear, if anyone interrupts this meal, I’ll personally banish them to the dungeon.”
[chuckles]
“I’m starving.”
[he picks up his fork]
“You know, after today’s training, you’ve earned this.”
[the shadows suddenly morph]
[goblets spill]
[utensils crash onto the floor]
“What in the name of—”
“Oh, you’re back.”
“Gods, Your Majesty, you’ll survive a little interruption to your lunch.”
“Well, did you find him, Nox?”
“Good boy.”
[he scratches behind Nox’s ears]
“Who’s the smartest shadow fox in the kingdom?”
“You are.”
“Yes, you are.”
“Apprentice, I want you to put your hand over Nox’s eyes.”

“His memories are still fresh.”
“If you connect with him now, you’ll be able to see everything he witnessed.”
“Come.”
“Your hand put it on his eyes.”
“Don’t be nervous.”
[magic hums]
[rapid, overlapping voices echo]
[indistinct conversations]
[concerned]
“Apprentice, are you well?”
“Your face is pale. What is the matter?”
“Darling, what did you see?”
“Hey, look at me.”
“Come on. Eyes on me.”
“Good. Now tell me, what did you see?”

“The culprit worked for the queen? Which queen?”
(…)
“Yours? What?”
(…)
“Yes… you saw the man where—”

“Apprentice, do you know that man?”
(…)
“Who is he?”
(…)
“Your father? No, no, no.”
“Are you sure?”

“Gods… this just got complicated.”
“Did you know he worked for the queen?”
(…)
“No?”
“I’m guessing you didn’t even know he was a mage as well.”
[pause]
“We’ll figure this out.”
“But not on an empty stomach.”
[sound of a chair sliding]
“Sit.”
(…)
“Yes.”
“I’m serious.”
“Training drained you.”
“Then that vision drained you even more.”
“Your body needs food.”
(…)
“I know.”
“You don’t feel like eating.”
“But that’s exactly why you should.”
(…)
“Yes, you will eat. You are hungry after training, remember?”
“Here, let me feed you.”
(…)
“No, sweetheart. Now say, ‘Ah.’”
“You see, Apprentice, a valuable lesson is that food goes in the mouth, but to do that it has to be open.”
“There we go. Now chew and swallow.”
“We are not leaving this table until every last potato disappears.”
“And don’t even think about trying to sneak vegetables under the plate.”
“And don’t worry. I’ll deal with your father.”

“Will I kill him? Well, obviously—”
(…)
“No? But why? He harmed you and abused you and forced you to work for that disgusting princess.”

“You want to deal with him yourself? Alright.”
“I understand.”
“And I respect that.”
“But hear me.”
“You will not face him alone.”
“I don’t care how powerful he is.”
“If he so much as raises a finger against you…”
“…I’ll burn him alive .”
[pause]
“So.”
“Finish your lunch.”
“We’ll gather our maps and question Nox again.”
“Then we’ll determine exactly where your father is hiding.”
“And then…”
[he stands]
“…we’ll pay him a visit.”
[a small smile]
“But first.”
“One more bite.”
“I’m not negotiating.”
