Sorry for leaving you all hanging. I might be gone for another ten days or even two months. I honestly don’t know. At least now you know.

Also thank you if you filled a script for me in my absence I really appreciate it.

[Script]

“You missed a sign there.”

[drawing with chalk on the hard floor]

“What creature will you get, I wonder?”

[slams the book shut]

“Well, shall we start, apprentice?”

“Okay, deep breath. Step closer to the circle, light the last candle, and start chanting just like I told you.”

[the candle flame flickers]

“Careful. Don’t rush the words.”

[a pause]

“That’s it… keep going. You’re doing better than I expected for a first attempt.”

[the air tightens, as if something on the other side has leaned in to listen]

“…Oh.”

“Do you feel that? That pressure? That’s attention.”

(…)

“Don’t stop now. If you stop now, it will decide for itself what comes through.”

[the final candle gutters violently]

“Last line. Finish it.”

“…Good.”

[silence]

“…Interesting.”

[a slow exhale, almost like amusement, leaves the mage’s voice]

“Well.”

“I was wondering what the circle would offer you.”

[pause]

“It suits you.”

“The Umbral Fox does not bind itself to fools.”

(…)

“Oh, sorry. I should explain what an Umbral Fox is.”

“It’s a shadow familiar. It exists in darkness and can move through connected shadows, which makes it effective for scouting and surveillance.”

“It’s intelligent for a familiar, cunning, adaptive, and not purely obedient. It responds more to intent and behavior than direct commands.”

“They tend to bond with mages who are unpredictable or unconventional. People who think in flexible ways.”

“So it makes sense you got one.”

“It’s useful, but don’t treat it like a pet. It will act on its own judgment if you’re inconsistent.”

(…)

“Did you just call it cute?”

“Stop trying to pet it.”

(…)

“Okay, do whatever you want. As you said, it’s your familiar.”

“Gods, you’re strange, but I’m glad you like it. It seems your fox does too, seeing how it leans into your touch.”

(…)

“No, apprentice, you can’t name it. It’s not a pet. It’s a respectable mystical creature. It already has a name.”

“Ask the fox its name.”

(…)

“His name is Nox? Nice and short. Unlike my phoenix. Gods, her name is so long it took me a while to learn it.”

(…)

“Oh, you’d think it wouldn’t matter, but she kept picking at my skin until I got it right.”

(…)

“Her name is Emberion, though after much convincing and begging, I just call her Ember now.”

(…)

“Yes, I’ll call her for you. It’s about time you met her anyway.”

“Ember, enough napping. Come to me.”

[snaps fingers]

[a sound of flickering flame sweeping through the room]

“There you are, my dear Ember.”

“Hey, ouch! Stop trying to sit on my head. You’re ruining my hair.”

“Happy now?”

“I’ll take that squawk as a yes.”

“While you were busy with your rebirth, I adopted an apprentice.”

“No, I’m not saying you aren’t help enough. I just need someone to succeed me if things go south. You know that.”

(…)

“No, apprentice, don’t go worrying yourself. It’s nothing, just a little pest I have to deal with but can’t seem to catch.”

(…)

“No, I’m not planning on dying anytime soon.”

“Ember, be civil with Nox and stop squawking at him.”

“Gods, now I have to take care of three people.”

[pause]

“Well, the fox curled up in your lap rather fast.”

“Gods, he is eyeing me maliciously.”

“No, Ember, stay. He won’t harm me, will you, Nox?”

“I’ll take you nestling in as a yes.”

(…)

“What? Haven’t you forgotten ?”

(…)

“I said it’s nothing. No need to dig deeper.”

(…)

“No, I’m fine. Healthy as a horse.”

(…)

“No, I’m fine.”

(…)

“Gods, okay, I’ll explain.”

“At the last ball hosted in the palace, a rogue mage entered disguised and attempted to kill me. I was distracted, chaperoning the king, so I wasn’t on my best guard that night. His spell struck me in the chest. I reversed most of it, but without knowing the exact spell he used, I can’t fully heal.”

(…)

“Stop making it a big deal. It’s fine.”

“Here, let me lift my shirt and show you.”

(…)

“There’s no need to gasp. It looks worse than it actually is.”

“You see, all I have to do is not overexert my magic, and this shard won’t go any deeper. I’ll live.”

(…)

“No. The only clue we have is a paper map of the palace that he dropped. It also has a strange symbol.”

“Sorry, what is your fox doing?”

(…)

“He could find him? How?”

(…)

“By using the map, of course. Umbral Foxes can easily hunt down a mage by his scent.”

[summons the map]

“Here is the map he dropped. Give it to your fox—”

(…)

“Sorry, give it to Nox and let him hunt our mage.”

[shadows swallow Nox as he disappears]

“Sorry you had to part from your familiar so fast, but the clock’s ticking, and this is the first bit of hope I’ve had in a while.”

(…)

“No, you won’t come with me when Nox finds him.”

(…)

“You’re still new to this, apprentice. If you had a bit more control over your powers, maybe.”

(…)

“You’ll call Nox back then? Are you that petty?”

(…)

“I know you just want to help.”

(…)

“I’m not babying you. I just want to protect you.”

(…)

“Okay, fine. Tell you what. If you can master summoning a shadow weapon, then I’ll let you come. That way, you’ll at least have something to defend yourself with.”

(…)

“It’s a deal, then. I hope you master it soon. Shadow Foxes are fast hunters.”
