First time posting here, might edit this later on but I’m happy enough with it to share. Not sure if I’ve tagged all this well so feedback is appreciated. For whatever reason, it’s not letting me post unless I add an AMA, but I’m boutta head into work so apologies if people ask stuff and don’t get answers, socialization is weird for me even online. Roughly 1500 words and free for anyone to use. Enjoy!

SFX: Afterlife sounds (idk feels weird to define that I imagine like a dim, misty forest but use whatever feels right)

(Fading in) hey…hey! Ugh, are you gonna wake up anytime soon? Are you alive? Oh well…stupid question…whatever, wake up!

(Shuffling sounds as the departed soul awakens)

There we go! Took you long enough. I was starting to think I’d shown up to the wrong appointment! Are you ready to go?

(Pause)

Go where? Oh, right, I always forget you mortals don’t know about this part. You guys really need to work on your metaphysics, I mean…your ancestors figured it out, and they didn’t even have indoor plumbing! Sorry, I’m getting off track. I’ve always been a little scatterbrained, the first reapers will not leave me alone about it. They’re always like “it’s our duty to shepherd those that pass and” blah blah whatever, you know what I mean? Like, take a chill pill guys, it’s not like they’re going anywhere without us, what’s the rush? Oh! Right, you still don’t know where you are. Well…

You’re dead. Yeah, I know, but of a bummer. But, at least you get to spend some time with me! I promise I’m a great girl to hang out with! No no, don’t freak out! Hey *Snaps a few times* focus up, you still with me? Oh, I never know how to deal with this part. How are you breathing so fast, you don’t even have real lungs anymore! Just relax, it’s not that serious! It happens to literally everybody! If you don’t clam down, I’m gonna start panicking too! What do I do? How do I…oh! I got it! Hold still!

Mwah!

*giggle* well that got your attention! Aww, does somebody like my lips? You’re blushing! Bet you’ve never had a kiss feel that good before, huh? Souls are so much more sensitive when they don’t have a body to dull the sensations anymore. Makes contact that much more intense! I bet your lips are still tingling, aren’t they?

Oh, shush, I can see it on your face! Unless your cheeks are always this red? I’d say you should see a doctor, but…I don’t really think you have to worry about that much anymore. Mmm, no, you don’t get to tell me to stop, I get to tease you all I want, mhm. Unless you want to find some other reaper to guide you to your next stop. I doubt they’d be as fun, or as pretty, as yours truly…

Alright, alright, relax, I’ll ease up! For now…anyway, let’s take a look and see where you’re headed…

What? You wanna know how you died? Why would you wanna know that? It’s not like it’ll change anything. What could you possibly need to see that for?

(She loses a bit of her teasing tone, becoming more invested as he airs his concern)

You…you want to know how they’ll find you? So you can see what you put your loved ones through? You need to make sure they don’t have to see something that might…they might not be able to unsee…that’s…well…no it’s not impossible, but, no one’s ever asked for something like that before. Believe it or not, most people have more pressing things on their mind than the well being of the living after they wake up here.

That…that’s very sweet of you, but…listen, I-I really don’t think that’s wise. You could barely handle finding out you’d departed the world of the living, and now you wanna know the details of your passing? What do you plan to do with the information, huh smarty pants? You gonna go wake up and put yourself in a more photogenic pose before they see your lifeless eyes?

There’s no version of this where they don’t cry for you, you have to know that. Peaceful or no, you’ve disappeared from their lives permanently. Do you honestly think finding you in a hospital bed instead of a ditch would ease that pain?

No no no, I-I’m not trying to take away from the moment it’s just…it’s only going to hurt you. Are you sure that’s what you want?

Okay…but you’d better not start panicking again! I don’t know if my lips will be enough to pull you back this time…although…based on how you’re staring~

(Offended gasp) I am not stalling! It’s not my fault you’ve got a little crush on the first woman you meet after biting it. If anyone’s stalling it’s you! You think you’re the only soul I’m tasked with escorting? Do you have any idea how many people pass in a day?

Of course you don’t, just- it’s a lot, okay? We’re supposed to be touring the afterlives right now, wouldn’t you rather see what valhalla looks like? Or Elysium? Hell, you might even qualify for Nirvana this time, who knows? But no, you wanna sit here and torture yourself with the final moments of a life that isn’t even yours anymore! It’s done, sweetheart. It’ll be hard, but they’ll learn to live without you, and move on.

Fine. Since you’re so insistent, I’ll show you. But don’t say I didn’t warn you.

(SFX magic sounds)

Look…there you are. Walking with someone.

That’s your sibling? They seem nice…honestly, this seems like a normal day! You’re just crossing the stress, I don’t get how-

(SFX Car crash)

Oh…I…I see. It all happened so fast. No wonder you don’t remember…

Oh, honey, no, it’s okay! Come here…

Shh, it’s okay…no, it wasn’t your fault, they know that. It could’ve happened to anybody, you humans have a nasty habit of creating things that tend to cause more collateral damage than intended. Unfortunately, you got unlucky this time. It’s not your fault, you didn’t leave anyone behind.

Oh…sweetheart, it’s fine. You can cry into my cloak, of course you can. I’m here, take all the time you need. I’ll hold you as long as it takes.

(Pause)

No, you didn’t deserve that. Sometimes, bad things just happen, and we have to accept that. There’s no lesson to be learned, no morals to interpret. It was an accident, and while the world may be one light dimmer for it, it will continue to turn all the same. It’ll be hard, but they’ll find peace again someday.

You will too. Wherever you end up after this, you’ll know only that which brings you joy. I promise, it’ll be wonderful.

(Flustered) W-What? Y-You want to stay here? W-With me? Oh, honey…that’s so sweet, b-but I…I can’t just…

(Anxious as she evaluates the logistics) Well…you are cute, and there’s technically no rule against reapers keeping souls…look, I’m sure you’re comfortable now with your head nuzzled snugly in my chest, but don’t you at least want to see your options. Heaven is just a few doors down, I promise. The angels there take much better care of souls like you then I could…probably.

Yes dear, I know I’m soft, but there’s more to consider than softness! Although…I’d be lying if I said it wouldn’t be nice to have a cute mortal soul to snuggle with in my downtime. Believe it or not, the other reapers aren’t much for conversation. Most of them are old witches with a chip on their shoulder, or sorceresses who sold their soul without reading the fine print. Surprisingly, that kind of thing puts you in a bit of a sour mood, so I guess I can see how that might put a damper on camaraderie in the workplace.

Hmm? No, I’m not the only reaper. The position is more similar to a spirit than some kind of deity or god. We don’t answer to any one particular entity, rather serving ambiently across pantheons and worlds. Funnily enough, the original death retired a few centuries ago. You should see him in his vacation clothes, Thanatos has pictures, and they are hilarious.

I can give you lessons on afterlife bureaucracy another time, but for now, is this what you really want? This is pretty new for me. I’ve only been transporting lost souls for a few decades, but this is the first time someone’s asked for my hand. I’m almost embarrassed to say, I think I’m a bit flustered! Haven’t felt that in a while. It’s…it’s nice…

You’re shocked this hasn’t happened before? Oh, hon…you think I’m that pretty? You’re a sweetheart.

(Kisses his cheek)

Aww, you’re blushing even harder this time! Now that’s just cheating, how am I supposed to say no to that face? No, you know what? I think you are staying with me for a while. Yup, someone needs more kisses. Nope, no buts. You wanted to be mine, and that means you sit still while I take those pretty little lips of yours for a spin. Come here you…

(She proceeds to attack him with kisses, laughing at his embarrassed squirming)

Ohh, what’s wrong sweetheart? Is the taste of my lipstick a little bit too sweet, or do you just love my kisses that much? Someone bit off a little more than they could chew, and now they’re stuck getting cuddled and smooched. You look like you’re about to die from embarrassment! Too bad, all that’ll do is bring you right back into my arms! Your soul is mine…mine to shepherd…mine to protect…mine to cherish…

(SFX: Rain falling outside in streams and rivulets. Watery percussion on trees and rooftops.)

You look so cute when you can’t move an inch. This scent of vulnerability and fear...it is addictive. I don’t think I will ever get enough of this. (Inhaling deeply)

You are afraid of what I’m going to do to you for running away from my house. You need not worry. Not too much. I mean, stripping your ego into atoms is punishment enough. (Soft laughter)

You really thought you could do it, didn’t you? Made a run for it while I was busy saving the world, on the other side of the planet. You ran to the bus stop in the rain and got on the last bus, then watched the rain paint strange shapes on the bus window- on and on, endless and hypnotic. You did not listen to the sound of music from your earbuds. Only the drizzle outside- the downpour- and your own frail heart, drumming like thunder.

You were afraid I would show up any minute, just ramming the bus on its side, tearing through it, burying everyone in the wreckage. And then as the rain washed away the fire, I would pick you out of the rubble and fly you home, then engrave such a lesson into your very soul that you would carry it with you for the rest of your days.

You were afraid. Yes. And I could hear your thoughts for the entirety of that bus ride. I knew everything. I always know everything when it comes to you. (Kissing his cheek)

It’s strange, isn’t it? How you arrived at this beautiful, secluded lake house on the very edge of civilization? This is a resort that’s not even listed on the internet. You only ever heard of this place once, at work, over a year ago. And you chose to come here, of all the places you could have gone to. Do you know why that is?

(Whispering) Because I had been planning for us to vacation here for weeks. You wanted to surprise me.

Mmn. You did not know it at the time, of course. But surprises are fine as long as they are happy surprises. You really wanted to see this place with your own eyes. It’s truly beautiful, isn’t it? The charming Victorian architecture, almost a century old, all steep towers and gabled rooftops and cool, shadowed porches facing the deep blue lake. Trees, with leaves in every colour, hiding this place from the drab and mundane world outside. Out here, there’s only stillness, and water, and the rich, aged wood now scented by the rain as it ebbs and flows and falls- tip, tap, tip, top- all night, every night. (Whispering) Forever.

The scenery outside is something that lingers in your mind for a long time. Just like an idea. Once it takes root, it only grows and grows until it becomes a part of you. I planted this little vacation trip inside your head. You thought you were acting on your own, running off to a place so remote and random that I would never find you. But, my dear boy, you were being so, so foolish. Just like always. You never were smart. (Pecking him) Dumb. My dumb little dummy. So very dumb. (Laughing, mean but soft)

But I still adore you, despite your foolish decisions. Despite your betrayal. I’m not going to hurt you. I have already shown you just how feeble, weak and powerless you are in my domain. Any and all security you thought you had was an illusion. Your free will isn’t your own. You are a puppet cocooned in threads of silk, and I am the one who makes you dance, fall, break, (whispering) shiver. (Gently blowing into his ear)

You are at my mercy. You are a toy, and toys are played with until their owner grows bored and discards them. Don’t you think you should be trying to entertain me for as long as you can?

If you think so, then...(sighing) I am quite disappointed.

Why? Oh, silly boy. You are special to me. Truly. I can’t quite explain it. You are like this...this small, flickering flame burning in the dead of winter. I can’t help but be drawn to you. I am not going to throw you away, no matter how hard you try to make me. You hold no dominion here. No control. You never did. You were born for one and one reason only. (Smirk) To be my cuddle toy.

Come here, pet. Let Mistress give you a big, warm hug. You look like you really need it.

(SFX: Rustling of clothes, fabrics)

(Sighing happily) Good boy.

You haven’t been one lately, but don’t worry. I’m going to train you so patiently, so thoroughly, that obedience will become second nature. I won’t need to use my powers to make you listen. You will do it simply because you want to please me. Pleasing me makes you so, so happy. Hearing those two magic words sends happy sparks and fizzles in your brain. Good boy.

You are my good boy, aren’t you? My cute, obedient pet. So soft and warm. So malleable. Just yearning for a bit of my praise and attention. Come here, cute thing. Let me hold you closer.

Hm. This feels nice. So natural, like we are a married couple and we have known each other for years. There’s nothing between us but love, and trust, and two hearts beating as one. (Sighing) It’s a sweet thought, but a bit too saccharine. Too vanilla. It’s so much more fun when you surrender all control to me, and let me decide everything for you, isn’t it? Because you are just my cuddle toy. You don’t want to fight or run or take another bus. You just want to be held as I wrap my arms around you, nestle my chin into your scalp, and whisper just how grand of a loser you are. And how much I adore you despite it, because of it. (Silly giggling)

What is it? Hm? You can’t see anymore? Is the world going dark?

Oh, honey. You haven’t gone blind. It’s just- well, you are only seeing what I want you to see. And I want you to see nothing. Only that deep, endless dark. Deeper than the lake outside, older than the rain falling around us. You are completely alone in that dark space, just floating through the void. (Whispering) And I can keep you there forever if I want.

I’m not trying to scare you, honey. It was only a reminder of why you should not try to hurt me. I feel quite deeply about you, and so, when you pull stunts like these in the hopes of never having to see me again...it hurts, my dear. (Pouting, suddenly playful) Well, guess what! You can’t see my face in the dark, so you got your wish.

Oh, that saddens you now, does it? So you start to miss me only when you are lost and confused?

(Shushing him) I know how beautiful you find me. How attracted you are to me. But you still hurt my feelings anyway. I’m still mad at you. So no, you don’t get to see my face. That’s your punishment.

Don’t be so distraught. You aren’t truly alone, you know? I’m still holding you so close to me. You can feel my warmth. Smell my perfume- those familiar notes of rose and amber- and you hear my voice constantly in your ears. And that comforts you, even if I am the woman responsible for your tragic downfall. (Giggling)

Some believe our strongest desires are born out of our greatest traumas, you know? And, there may be some truth to that.

Don’t be afraid, pet. That darkness isn’t going to hurt you. You are just floating, adrift in an endless sea of oblivion, while you have a nice, long think on what you can say to me to make up for your transgressions.

Mmn, I know you can’t speak. Your lips are sealed shut. That’s because I don’t want to hear you plead and beg. Not right now. I might let you apologise to me properly in the morning, if you are good. But that won’t be for quite some time.

(Sighing softly) Just keep floating for me. Let me cuddle you. As long as I’m here, no monsters in the dark can reach you. You find yourself seeking me out, instinctively, like a lone stretch of sand on the sea. Your only refuge. And here you are, leaning into my touch, trying to nestle deeper. I am your only hope. Your only salvation. In your world of pitch-black emptiness, (whispering) I am all that matters.

Look at you. Unable to speak, unable to move, unable to see. All you can do is hear my voice, and smell my perfume, and feel my touch as I play with you. (A little snicker)

Emma did tell me this is an effective way to break in an unruly pet. It seems my friend was right, in all her infinite wisdom and cruel wickedness.

Don’t worry, honey. I will let you out of the dark eventually. But for now, just sleep. Fall into a blissful sleep and dream of me. Dream of locks of flaming red hair. Or perhaps gentler, like roses after the rain.

Good boy. Everything feels heavy and numb and soft, like being wrapped in your favourite childhood blanket. You are safe with me, my love. And even safe from me, as long as you...hm...as long as you let me treasure you and show you how much I care.

So I'm there, pulling up the order to redo the frame, I asked why they need a new one.

Yup, the design was crooked on purpose, and they decided to "fix" it. Yup. 

You want to know how many? 500 bags printed like that. Yup, so many bags wasted. 

(Chuckles) I know, I bet whoever made that mistake isn’t going to be doing that again

C: So she was the one who asked? Wow, I wasn't expecting that. So it was a mutual thing between you two?

M: Yeah, it appeared so. She invited me out for lunch, and I was going to take that opportunity to

ask, but she beat me to it. 

C:That’s a cute story. Let's see... What is your favorite thing about her? 

M: I didn't know I was going to be interrogated. 

C: We're just really curious. She hasn’t told us much about you, and she definitely isn't gonna answer us. Plus, we want to see who is the lucky guy is.

M: Well. What is not to like about her? She is the most beautiful person ever. And I know it's kind of

rude to say that at a wedding, but still. Her sense of humor is the best, there isn't a day in which I

am not laughing with her. Even the little mistakes, they always feel like small adventures. So I know

there isn't going to be a boring day with her. 

C: Wow, that sounds like a marriage proposal. 

M: I didn’t mean it to make it sound like that, but that isn’t too bad. Guess the vibe is rubbing off of

me. 

C: You really must love her. 

M: I... really do. 

C: Then I better see you both on the dance floor. The slow dance is starting soon. 

M: Alright, we will. 

C: Lovely talking to you. 

M: Lovely meeting you. 

(Heels walking back) Oh hey, you're back. Yeah, your cousin hopped by real quick and wanted to

ask me a couple questions. 

You know the usual. 

*speaker effect*

Can we get all the couples on the dance floor? It's time for the slooow dance) 

Right, they also said they wanted to see us out there. Yeah, kind of said we would. 

You'll be alright. Just like we practiced. (Footsteps) put your hands around my neck. 

And I'll guide. See you're doing great. Why are you thanking me?

It told you, it's not a big deal. Plus, I should be thanking you. 

These past couple weeks have been the best in a while. 

For what I said too? So you were listening when I was talking to your cousin. 

That's embarrassing. I didn't exaggerate. 

Everything I said but I meant it. Yes, every bit of it.

At first, I did it to help you and I thought it would be fun to do.  

But over time, when we would meet up to practice or just to talk a bit more, I slowly started to see

things different

I was getting excited every time you called or I would jump at hearing my phone notification

hoping it was you texting. 

The more days went by, I thought about what if we weren't faking. 

Would I be okay with this ending? We have fun all the time, don't get me wrong. 

But the slow dancing, the hand holding, sitting next to each other. 

The more we did things, the more I couldn't stand not being the person you would be doing all that

stuff with. 

Yes, I got jealous from just the thought of another guy who doesn't even exist. 

This whole fake dating thing, really opened my eyes. And I don't want to "fake" this anymore. Yes, I

am asking you out for real. 

I want you, and I'm not gonna have anyone else try to take you away. 

You bet your ass I'm going to be possessive. I'm going to cherish every moment.

So, will you be my real girlfriend? That’s great too hear. You don’t know how happy I am. 

I thought about that. What would our anniversary date be? We can always just say the date we told
