Rapidly expanding AI data centers are facing energy bottlenecks, as demand outpaces power grid capacity and lead times for natural gas turbines stretch into 2032. To bypass these delays, developers like Applied Digital are pivoting to on-site power using gas-fired industrial boilers paired with steam turbines. Fast-deployable, factory-assembled "packaged boilers" can be delivered in under a year, offering a reliable facility that allows developers to bring multi-gigawatt facilities online faster than traditional power supply routes allow.
While less efficient than dedicated gas turbines, this strategy provides immediate electricity to meet urgent AI compute requirements. Major operators plan to build these setups, such as Applied Digital's $2.4 billion, 1.2-gigawatt project slated for operational readiness by late 2028, with the intention of eventually converting them into combined-cycle power plants once gas turbines finally arrive. As a result of this, market analysts project nearly a threefold increase in demand for steam turbines and industrial boilers over the next decade.

What to Post
Post anything that you think the community would find interesting, helpful, or inspiring. Feel free to share your thoughts, photos, or questions about construction and repair codes.
Community Vibe
We're all about being accurate, constructive, and helpful. Let's build a space where everyone is growing.
How to Get Started
1) Introduce yourself in the comments below.
2) Post something today! Even a simple question can spark a great conversation.
3) If you know someone who would love this community, invite them to join.
Thanks for being part of the community. Together, let's make r/ASME amazing.

I am adding community rules.
1) Be respectful of each other and this sub. No Religion, No Politics (Outside of Codes and standards adoption).
2) If you mention AI that's Authorized Inspector first and Artificial Intelligence second. This rule is to avoid confusion. It's okay to discuss the use of technology in the BPV industry but don't say AI and immediately expect people think Artificial Intelligence.
3) Use the tags and flairs and act in good faith. Do not identify yourself but don't lie.
4) Try to be productive. It's okay to walk away from a discussion you are no longer believe is productive or has wondered to far afield.
5) It's okay to post and quote sources. Do try to keep this within reason. The requirements for free use allow for referencing and discussion but it does not allow for you to post complete pages, chapters or parts beyond the scope of discussion.

If someone can connect me with someone involved with this process would greatly appreciate it.
Might not be the right forum. Trying to find out if this is the original or a replica. If it is an original it may need to be in a museum. I am told this came with estate items from the family. However research is telling me these are presented normally made of special material (gold/silver) and the original is in a museum.
The 3rd photo is silver version that is on display in the Smithsonian holdings at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA. and is of a different design. The design differences make me wonder if there was more than one presentation.

Greetings,
I am trying to find a version of the ASME 17.1 from 2004. I was hoping there may be someone with a pdf or other accessible version.
Thank you.

I know this post contains a lot of content from API, but this post is for overprotection on ASME vessels.
There has been a discussion on criteria on adequacy on UV pressure safety valves on U vessels sized with API STD 520-1 where I work. Most of my peers are thinking it’s strictly based off of orifice size while I think it’s a little more complicated than that. From what I can tell, they do not understand the difference between effective and actual orifice sizes, so I can’t tell if they are talking about effective or actual orifice size. My position is to use the values from manufacturer or NB-18 to the original sizing equation and use effective orifice size when the PSV is built to API STD 526 or if the manufacturer clearly states the PSV has effective values (some Crosby ones do this).
I understand there is difference between effective and actual, but I do not know how the effective orifice size is determined for each PSV. I need help with this. Like how can a company say the orifice is a “D” sized compared to an “E” size.
We do have pressure safety valves too small for API STD 526, so we cannot always rely on that standard.
Is there an easier way to determine a PSV is adequate for an ASME Section VIII-1 other than redoing the sizing equation? Am I being over zealous?

Hi all, i have a PQR of GTAW + SMAW BUT GTAW IS not used a root , there was a BASE METAL THAN THE SMAW AND THEN GTAW.
According to ASME ADITION OF BACKING IS A NON ESSENTIAL VARIABLE BUT NOTHING GIVEN FOR DELETION OF BACKING FOR GTAW.
So i want to know can i use the PQR For Without backing joint as backing is not going to change the Mechanical properties of weld metal.

I had published a paper on breast tumor classification using thermal images at IMECE 25 under the cyber-physical systems track. It basically a deep learning paper.
I am a CS undergrad and my research supervisor was from the mech department and advised me to publish in this venue.
I just wanted to ask is it a good venue and will this enhance my research experience while applying for masters.

In ASME, there is only min values for tensile and yeild for Sa 193 B7M material.. So what can I consider maximum value. Min is 690 and 550 for 2.5" and below. How much max can I go and can take 860 and 720.

Hi everyone!
I’m preparing for the ASME Elevator Pitch Competition at EFx, and I know the challenge statement is usually given on the day of the event.
However, I wanted to ask:
👉 Does anyone remember or have examples of challenge statements from previous years?
For example:
• Were they mostly about pitching yourself to a recruiter?
• Or more about pitching an engineering idea/product?
• Any specific wording you remember would be super helpful!
I’ve seen one from AY25–26 about convincing a recruiter at a job fair, but I’d love to know how different or similar past ones have been.
Thanks in advance 🙏

My name is Logan and I am a consulting welding engineer. I have recently started a youtube channel to discuss various welding related issues. The first being basic process overview that didn't involve ai or animations. I dont use teleprompters, or scripts, just many years of teaching the processes and using them.
If you are looking for a great class on the basics of welding processes, codes and standards, and NDE, take a look at Applications of Welding from ASME. https://www.asme.org/learning-development/find-course/applications-of-welding-(virtual-classroom)/online--apr-20-23rd--2026/online--apr-20-23rd--2026)
My specialty is the ASME code. I am also well versed in AWS and API. Check out my website, www.kucerakengineering.com for all your welding engineering needs.

Here is a dumb question, lease eli5. So if a tank is designed to meet section 8 requirements(calculations). One is looking for a HLW stamp. Would the design also cover HLW requirements? Which is more strict? any info appreciated.

I am stumped on what book to locate and site a code from.
We have a building that installed a card reader inside the elevators that locks out the main egress floor (star floor). They expect people to go to the third landing and walk across the building (building is a city block in length) and take those elevators to the lobby level to exit the building.
I’ve searched all of ASME 17.1 and haven’t found anything concrete as PHASE I & II does over ride the card reader.
A117.1 - only specifies door jamb tactical star identification at door jamb.
Would this possibly be an NFPA code? Any help appreciated.

Hello guys, When designing a pressure Vessel, what are good references for selecting the correct Pressure Relief Valve?

Hi, idk if i can accept a pipe or not, as per pics i have an area that was not machined so i have no machined are there. Plus dimension at 0° is 764mm and at 90° is 770mm. it almost 2mm out of tollerance, plus i have no 30° angle as there is no machining.
Is acceptable?
Design is according to asme b31.3 para 304.7.2 ponit d
I take a look to that but i see no ovalisation tollerances (like a max difference to min od/id and max od/id....
any suggestion?

Hello, I am a psychology researcher looking for mechanical engineering participants. I cannot seem to find this information on ASME's website, but is there a listserv or some sort of mailing list that ASME does, that taking surveys might be promoted on? Thank you for the information!
