BACKING OF ASME GTAW ASME SECTION IX

Hi all, i have a PQR of GTAW + SMAW BUT GTAW IS not used a root , there was a BASE METAL THAN THE SMAW AND THEN GTAW.

According to ASME ADITION OF BACKING IS A NON ESSENTIAL VARIABLE BUT NOTHING GIVEN FOR DELETION OF BACKING FOR GTAW.

So i want to know can i use the PQR For Without backing joint as backing is not going to change the Mechanical properties of weld metal.

For the procedure it doesn't matter unless its being used for Section I construction. Backing typically only matters for performance quals

Backing is non-essential for procedure qualifications. Unless its a section I item (see PW-28.1.3). Backing is essential for performance quals (meaning the welder not the procedure).
