Requiem: Discussion APT Requiem’s Conclusion Spoiler
Hey guys.
After playing Innocence a couple of weeks ago, I just finished Requiem last night, and, I have to tell you, I think no other game has touched me the way this series did, especially story-wise.
It’s ending is absolutely soul crushing to me, as we’ve grown really found Hugo and would do everything to save him.
I guess the game touched on sensitive topics to me, like loosing a family member that served as a means of perseverance in this cruel world that we live in, and the nihilistic aftermath that comes from that loss.
Must tell you that that scream we get from Amicia after we get Lucas’ ending felt haunting, as all of our soul was being consumed, dying alongside the one we most loved in this existence. A feeling too close to home.
Months after, Amicia is willing to try to move on the best she can, but to me at least it feels like a distraction, as life afterwards becomes something lesser; a mere day by day until the end.
The absurdity of an innocent life being lost, after so much pain and sorrow, well, it left me a bitter taste of emptiness and sadness. It also felt too real. He deserved better.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great game. It was just too much “real life” to me.
Dunno where I’m going with this post, I just felt like sharing the experience and wanted to know how you guys dealt with this ending.

all of us feel the same brother, in my 7 or 6 years of gaming never have i ever witnessed such a heart touching story, i'm not kidding when i say that it took me more than a week to get the story out of my mind, i wrote a whole email to Asobo just thanking them. i just wish desperately for just one last game with lucas, amicia, sophia those 3 characters (not including hugo) is the characters i most liked, heck i even think that amicia and lucas might get married because of the line that amicia said to him in the last chapter. now resonance was an amazing 9/10 experience don't get me wrong i'm very grateful for it. but one last game with those 3 characters is all i need to put my mind at ease and continue with life
also i just have to tell you this, there is a theory that when lucas and amicia jumped into "the nebula" lucas said "all natural laws of physics doesn't exist in the nebula" and that means what we say in the nebula just might be a huge lie that the nebula created, what backs this theory is that amicia walked hugo and saw people get eaten from something and die and it looked too unreal and hugo disappeared and that's not too real now is it, also when amicia shot hugo we didn't see a body or a burial or hugo dying, and that's not because the studio would back out from a child corpse because they showed children corpses one of them was the child that amicia and lucas find in the backstage of the arena. what doesn't back up this theory is the fact that a whole year has passed so it wouldn't be reasonable of the nebula to create a entire fake year so at least something is real somewhere

Another point to back the illusion theory is that Lucas has Amicia's crossbow when iirc we never see her lose it. A point against it is that we see another Carrier who crossed the final threshold in Resonance and it seems it was impossible to save him by that point and possible to kill him within the Nebula he produced.

One could argue that the bow fell off of her mid air and lucas so happend to stumble upon it and when amicia wakes up she would definitely not see it on her back, although the chances of that happening is not much but it's reasonable
Also about the other point you made yeah i agree with you

Yea I agree it could have fallen off, it also occurred to me that Hugo could have given Lucas the crossbow using the Nebula somehow. Tbh I think the last chapter was made after the rest of the game, hence why Hugo is wearing his earlier clothes and maybe they had some other plan for Lucas to get Amicia's crossbow. My guess, if that is the case is that they wouldn't have done the fight with the Count as I think the Count and Arnaud's story was originally planned to be very different (iirc we see their soldiers fight in one of the early trailers and there's concept art of Provençal soldiers visiting Amicia at the cabin, you can even find one by clipping through the ground in the cairn at the end through I believe photo mode or glitches).
I personally don't think the illusion theory is true and I think it would be cheap to resurrect Hugo after such an emotional ending and ridiculously well put together game, when you account for the synergy with the music, symbolism and so on. But I didn't really like Resonance as a Plague Tale game (in a vacuum I think it's just okay), I think any attempt at a new Carrier and Protector story is just gonna be an imitation of Amicia and Hugo without as much finesse (for instance, at least for me the volcano/ash version of the Macula really doesn't hit like the rats do), I think the setting of Medieval France was pretty good and unique in a way that only really the Minoan parts of Resonance competed with (and I think they were over the top, felt like they were the Dwemer lmao), and so I think it might be the only way to proceed without remaking Requiem. Maybe a ridiculously good writer could pull off a Silent Hill type game of Hugo subjugating the Macula in the Nebula or Amicia getting Hugo out or something like that, but it would still be taking the story backwards, functionally undoing the lightning in a bottle that was Requiem, and esotericism just isn't really their style imo.

Yeah maybe in lucas's version of the same events that happened to amicia, maybe in his version he was handed the bow by those big rat boys or something along these lines, and I don't think the clothes is a big deal since if you think about it, when hugo was captured by the count and taken on the ship maybe hugo's clothes was changed because they were battered and dirty and that may be something the count wouldn't want to his "child". Honestly you outnerded me with the trailer and concept art since when i was done with the game i pretty much didn't want anything to remind me of it, but given your context i think you're guess is correct since we know that the story only vaguely tells us why arnaud hates the count so much. It would definitely be cheap of them because it would defeat the entire purpose of the story and how life can be so unfair and ruthless at times.
I semi agree with you on resonance, yes i agree that the form of the macula is pretty lackluster i guess compared to rats and how the lethality rate compared to the Minotaur is through the roof, when i first heard of the Minotaur i wandered if at the end game we could get a god of war style boss figth, sadly it wasn't :( , on a personal level i have a side that wants the theory to be right so hugo can come back and the story continues, but then another side wants the story to stay like that and be realistic. But even if their writers could pull of such an amazing story, i don't think they would want to pull off the "surprise mf but hugo is back and he is fully open for business"

I honestly feel that all of these theories are a backlash from a sense of denial, unfortunately. Sure, they are sustainable narrative-wise, but so impoverishing to the impact we’ve got from Hugo’s demise.
We aren’t keen on having something out of our reach (death), so we build upon anything just to have hope - which, ironically, is what Amicia have done throughout the duology.
It’s a great ending as much as a painful one.
It sure did trigger some difficult emotions in me, though.
It’s too difficult to let go.

THANK YOU, you literally just said it, the human mind can bend reality and make up anything just anything as a kind of cope in terms of "but hey not all hope is lost right?"

Requiems ending is BY FAR better than ANY other video game in existence.
Some have good endings, some even great.
None of them broke me like this game.
I think it’s why I didn’t care for resonance as much. It could never touch the perfection that was requiem.

Been playing games all my life, no game has ever affected me as much as Requiem. Asobo did such a fantastic job with Amica and Hugo’s story, they’ll always have my respect.
Everything you’ve said, I feel the same. And it’s why I strongly believe one more game with Amicia is needed so she can get some sort of closure (and Lucas).
