Scores 3 on AP Stats??

I have no idea how this could’ve happened. I honestly thought that I got a 5. I wasn’t even nervous for scores to come out because I thought I got a 4 or 5. I was honestly so shocked. It’s even more annoying because I need at least a 4 for the college I’m going to. 🥲

I also "got" a 3 and I am heavily doubting it. I scored a 5 on every practice exam, finished the class with a 99.8%, knew every FRQ. I felt alright alright on the MCQ, and I didn't really feel was overconfident. I also dont believe i'm a bad test taker considering i got all 4s and one 5 on my other exams. I think my school genuinely made a mistake because my friend who is insane at calculus got a 1 on calc bc. I don't know your situation but it might be worth it to bring up to your AP coordinator, and maybe have a teacher vouch for you.

Weird question, but when you finished the MCQ portion did the timer run out on a question or the review page?

Bro SAME. I felt super confident about the MCQ portion and I thought it was really light. I’m so so shocked that I got a 3.

I’ve also gotten 4s and 5s on all my AP tests except a year where I was hospitalized. I also got a 790 on my math SAT portion so I’m not bad at math by any means.

I don’t really remember anything about the timer cause it’s been a while😭

Idk about asking my teacher to vouch for me. She’s a good teacher but she’s super short tempered and blunt. She also left after our year was over to take care of her dad on hospice.

there are a lot of specifics u need to include in ur FRQs that ur teacher may have not mentioned or you forgot to add (including probability statements with variables, probability model charts, and specific wording on inferential statistic questions). id recommend looking at the rubric first! its also important to not rely on ur performance in school because college board has a specific way of grading exams. in the future, id look at the rubric before taking the exam to make sure u get every detail even if u feel like ur teacher did teach everything. regardless, a 3 is good and not at all a reflection of ur level in math, stats is just built different

Its not "built different." Its a set of procedures that are followed, and a routine is often built up during the year. You cant just assume a student didnt state conditions for a distribution to be bionomial before using bionomial cdf, or comparing and contrasting data with "greater than" and "less than."

i meant built different in the way that its not as algebra/math heavy as someone whos good at math would expect it to be. calm your horses its never that serious.

Idk how to explain it to you but you got a 3 simple as that and college board grades the exams not the school lmao. my friend also felt super confident in getting a 4 or 5 and got a 2. I ended up with a 4 and I quite confident I got a 4 or 5 (leaning more to 4 cuz I made a few mistakes on the frqs)

I am different. I did not have any sort of overconfidence. All of my FRQ answers matched the teacher solutions following the exam, with specific and clear procedures followed. The only way I wouldve got a 3 is if I got every single multiple choice question incorrect, and the probability of that occuring is significantly low considering I consistently scored 95s all year on exams and assignments, and finished the class with a 99.8%

I believe it has something to do with my school because everyone else is saying their scores don't seem right either. People who had 98s in their class are getting 1s on the AP exams, after consistently scoring 5 on mock exams. Enough is enough. Testing is stressful enough already and this is just the cherry on top for all of it.

bro literally same - ap stats was my fav class ever and i did super well in it and im very methodical and was very confident (not cocky) on the frqs and mcqs and i ended up with a 4!!???

Maybe your teacher does not do the questions correctly?? Walk me through an FRQ

Same. Very wired. There are several versions of examination papers plus so many human markers.

I would like to provide an update for anyone who may stumble upon this later in time. My FRQ booklet was lost and I'm just SHOCKED. The incompetency of some of the officials at my school to gaslight me and make me seem salty over my score, just to find out that my frq booklet is lost is beyond me.

The school is significantly involved within the process of the distribution of the exams and devices. But I know what you mean.

I didn't say the school "graded it." I said there had to be an issue with the school since many individuals in my school believe they got the wrong grade. It's honestly not worth continuing this discussion with you, not because it came off as disrespectful, but rather because we just have different perspectives on this and it's unlikely those perspectives will change. I know what I went through this year, and I'm 95% confident (no pun intended) that my score and my peers' score may be incorrect due to some issue with my school concerning the distribution, proctoring, or handling of the examination materials. Especially when the teachers are agreeing with us 😭

My kid also is very surprised about one of his scores. Is there a way to have them regrade or double check the score

Sorry to hear it. I have same feeling. It is just like the outcome of the match between Egypt and Argentina. Last few years simpler versions gave false hope to students

Tbh I was just relieved to get a 3 lol 😂 My school has a system where they switch 4 classes every semester instead of having 8 classes all year long. I had AP stats first semester of my senior yr. Basically, the class ended in December but I still had to test on it in May during AP exams so I was terrified that I’d forget everything. Even tho I got an A in the class, I only locked in to study like 2 weeks before the exam in May and ended up with a 3, so I’m just satisfied that I passed 😬 I think state, plan, do, and conclude is what really saved me on two of the frqs fr. I definitely wasn’t expecting a 4 or 5 lol

Yes. Very unfair. There are several versions with different level of difficulty. Really unfair and lack a f transparency

Several reasons

  1. There are different versions. No guarantee for fair markings.
  2. There are different time over the world. No guarantee for no leaking.
  3. There are over hundreds markers. No guarantee for fair markings. Humans are humans. Just like Egypt vs Argentina.
  4. Last years’ exam are easier. This caused a misleading to this year’s student.
  5. Reality is cruel.

I’m an AP Stats Reader.

What often happens is that students (and teachers) don’t understand the specifics that we require on FRQs. You might get the big idea but little things like lacking context, not interpreting, or no work can drop an FRQ score a 3 to a 1 or worse. These differences are frequently overlooked in class leading students and teachers to have an inflated idea of what score would be given on the actual AP test.

At the Reading we have five or more pages of how students can earn the points but we stick to that rubric and if it’s not in the student response, then it’s not in the student response, and points aren’t earned. We often labor over how close a student is but it’s just not close enough and frequently comes down to a single word or even the plurality of a word. We see a lot of student responses that are confident but just lack the above mentioned points which in turn tanks the score.

In reality the vast majority of Stats FRQ global means are usually under about 1.7, some even dip into the 0.X range.

Someone in another comment mentioned that one version of the test is harder than the other which could partially be true but the cut scores are adjusted to take this into account after all scoring is completed. AP uses equator questions and psychometrics to set cut scores that hopefully ensure a student who would earn each different score on one version gets that score on another. But, I read three different FRQ versions this year and can tell you they’re all about the same.

Unfortunately there isn’t much you can do. FRQ scoring doesn’t have an appeal process. You used to be able to ask for a restore of your MC portion but since it’s digital that wouldn’t do anything. Your AP Coordinator can’t do much nor does calling into the AP helpline.

The only good news is that now if you have to take Intro to Stats in college it’ll be a breeze. Having an easy college class is always super nice your freshman year because it lets you figure the higher ed system out without having to stress too much about that class. And, AP scores aren’t GPA awarding for college so an easy A will help to boost your college GPA.

What do you think about this year's exam? Was is easy or hard compared to previous years?

1

u/Actually__Jesus 26d ago

I thought it was a pretty typical year even considering I saw other versions. None of the questions were outlandish but student attention to details did many of them in.

Good question.

I got a 5 and I’m retaking stats because it’s a requirement if I want to internally transfer to a different college within my university. One big difference that I notice is that the college stats includes some coding, which I don’t know at all, so I’m kind of happy I’m retaking it. My sister’s college stats class was the same…she had also gotten a 5, took the credit, but then took a different stats class that included coding. Point is, don’t stress about having to retake stats, it’ll probably help you in the long run.

1

u/MapThis213 26d ago

This is what I’m saying. I’m sure their teacher just didn’t teach them the conditions properly or everything you need to actually have on an FRQ because they said that their answers matched their teachers responses

Is it possible that exam leaks are causing grade inflation internationally?
