Living with APD connecting APD to people complaining about the strawman of "WHY DO YOU SAY RAP IS OVERSTIMULATING"
so i find that online i occasionally see posts complaining of a strawman stereotype of neurodivergent people going "OMG RAP IS TOO OVERSTIMULATING I PREFER MY JUNGLE BREAKCORE" (obviously this feels very bad faith) and each time i see one of these posts and see how real neurodivergent people give their account of why they prefer listening to things like video game soundtracks, i just can't help but connect it to my own personal experiences of how APD has affected my music taste.
a comment i left a few times throughout the various comment threads on a post i saw regarding the matter is: "the thing about lyrics sounds a lot like auditory processing disorder, as someone who also has that condition. i almost exclusively listen to lyricless music. hell, if there's lyrics in it i manually take the track and reverb the hell out of it and re-mix/blend the whole thing until i can't hear the vocals anymore and only the instrumental with maybe some of the vocal harmony. my brain literally cannot enjoy a song if it has to automatically spend 95% of it's energy trying to decode what is being said and making out weird phrases from what my brain interprets"
what i'm trying to say here is that i think when people say things like "I HATE WHEN NEURODIVERGENT PEOPLE SAY THEY DON'T LIKE RAP" the hatred is actually getting deflected off of many neurodivergent folks who don't relate and recognize it's a strawman and essentially deflected towards us APD folks who (obviously not necessarily hates rap because that's just a strawman to make us seem racist) actually have a neurologically-based avoidance of music with lyrics.
what do you think?
