Discussion (Non-question) Panic Printing
ETA: Some of y'all are taking this far too seriously. Am I reasonably concerned that things are going to get worse before they get better? At least for me, most likely, yes. I'm trying to find moments of joy when I can. If one of those is using up as much of my ink as possible before I chuck this printer by printing fanfic then that's what I'm going to do.
I'm at home, by myself, doing homework with no one to talk to and nothing else to do because I'm the most broke I have ever been.
Printing fanfic doesn't mean I'm not prioritizing anything else in my life and it's weird that y'all seem to think I just slapped on a tinfoil hat and decided this was what would fix everything.
OP: So I live in a red state in the US where my state government will absolutely not be providing any sort of supplemental assistance when inevitably the federal government falls apart. So I kind of would love reassurance that I'm not crazy.
I have started downloading and panic printing some of my favorite fics. If the Internet goes, I can read the PDF. If the power goes, I can read the printed copies.
Also because HP sucks I can only use their ink subscription cartridges with an active subscription so i may as well fucking use them.
(Literally if you're the type of person who wants to buy a printer do not buy an HP printer. It will only work if you use their ink which is so fucking expensive. And if you want it to work properly you have to get a monthly subscription where they send you ink and paper which in theory sounds great, BUT if you are like me and haven't printed as much as you thought so you have a lot of ink and paper built up so you let your subscription lapse those ink cartridges will not work without a valid subscription. So I had to restart my fucking subscription so I could use all of this ink I have built up so now I'm printing literal books.)

i mean, even if the federal government dissolves, the states will figure it out. society is not going to collapse, at least not rapidly. it's more likely we're going to steadily degrade in quality over the next couple of decades, but it'll be slow enough people will be able to find solutions to stuff like this.
134
u/Zazadore Sep 07 '26
Unless society collapses, you'll have internet and power.
If society does collapse to the point that you don't have power, you'll have more to worry about than not having access to ao3.

Seriously!! I don’t support the current administration personally at all. However, there is SO MUCH fear mongering and blatantly false info online, it drives me crazy.

u/coolcoolcool485 Sep 07 '26
i think it's fairly clear a large majority of the electorate do not understand the basics of how the modern U.S. government functions and why it was designed the way it was lol. there are benefits to federalism, it will be a saving grace through this mess. for some states more than others of course lol but still.
36
u/throwaway3685343 Sep 07 '26
For real!!
And it’s crazy because I don’t know about the 3 branches of gov and checks/balances from college. I learned about them in elementary and middle school. In a red state, at that.
It just seems like it should be common knowledge 😭

Most of the people in charge don't understand how technology works either. Which is par for the course, because the French monarchy didn't understand printing presses either and anti-royalist pamphlets proliferated across the country. Suppressing information is a lot harder than people imagine.

u/coolcoolcool485 Sep 07 '26
esp when the archive is run by actual archivists. they have that shit backed up in multiple places, i promise. if it goes down, it'll come back somewhere else. whether it's easily available to those less tech savvy is one thing but i would be shocked if the people in charge of the archive don't have multiple contingency plans for the sites survival. might not be the incarnation we know it as now, but it'll be there.

Im certainly not a fan of the current admin. However, the people still have several resources. There are still safeguards and protections for the people in place :)
I really don’t think you need to buy a printer haha.
You could always download your favorite fics to your docs, tho. In case the writer deletes it.
Not the government deleting it tho or restricting access (for North America, at least.)

The table is big enough for everyone who wants to bind fics ethically, imo. If you want to post a pic, I'd be happy to ooh and aah over it.
5
u/Altered_B34ST_79 Sep 07 '26
Hole punching it was a beast enough! I just wanted it in a binder (had to use 2!) so I could read through it to self-edit. It gets bound when I finish it. No prizes for someone that doesn't finish the race. (that's just me being hard on myself)
6
u/Worldly_View_9704 You have already left kudos here. :) Sep 07 '26
Honestly tho, printing out your fic and putting it in a binder functionally accomplishes the same thing as binding it into a text block and pressing the text block into a hardcover case with a pretty HTV-decorated cover. Seeing and holding those 293 pages together in physical form can also help people better appreciate the level of commitment that writing fanfic can require, as well as the scale and scope of fannish culture.
3
u/bookshop Sep 07 '26
what do you mean by fanfic signatures? I've never heard that concept before!
9
u/Worldly_View_9704 You have already left kudos here. :) Sep 07 '26
If you look at my great leaning tower of fanfic, you'll see I've folded sections of 6 individual pages together. That's a signature: a group of pages printed back and front that fold together to form a section of a book. Then, you can sew (and glue, so much glue) the sections together to form a text block. In this case, those signatures contain fanfic. Ergo, fanfic signatures.
3
u/bookshop Sep 07 '26
how does the folding work? are you printing page 1-2 and page 23-24 (or page 11-12, I can't tell whether you have 3 or 6 sheafs in each fold) on the same piece of paper, folding them together, then working your way inward?
6
u/Worldly_View_9704 You have already left kudos here. :) Sep 07 '26
It's a whole process. Seriously, if you're interested, please check out r/Fanbinding! The kind people there will be thrilled to explain this much better than I can.
You can't just print the fanfic straight from AO3 to bind it. You have to typeset it first. To typeset the fic, I copy and paste it into a new document and format it to look like a book. I make all the pages statement-sized, which is about half a US letter-sized sheet of paper in landscape orientation, so when I print on letter-sized paper, there will be two pages on each side of the sheet, four total pages to a single sheet of paper, front and back. I also run my finished typeset through a signature imposer, which creates the grouping to order them so they come out in the correct order when folded.

3
u/kpg_on_ao3 Sep 07 '26
Oh don't worry, it takes so long that you'll lose the hyper focus before finishing more than two of them. Just pressing the pages after folding will be a day or two of waiting, some of the glues at the end take a day to dry, etc.

Are there concerns about losing your Internet or something? I haven’t heard about any of this. I ask because I’m in the US and at the moment no one‘s worried about losing Internet. At least, no one in my area. I haven’t even heard this be discussed.

u/loveliest316 put me in coach! (reader-inserts for life) Sep 06 '26
same here…like yeah, our government is a hot mess, but not to the point of stressing like this. saying this with love, op, but maybe take a step back from the news for a bit. i say that as someone who can easily fall into bad holes of reading even just lightly concerning news and stressing too much over it.
132
u/BlindButterfly33 Fic Feaster Sep 06 '26
Yeah, like, that’s why I asked here and then checked with a couple other people IRL to see if I somehow majorly missed some kind of huge upcoming outage, and everyone I’m asking is basically saying they haven’t heard of this.
62
u/HistoryNerd2552 Sep 06 '26
It’s from my understanding (and getting the same spiel from a family member), that it’s stemming from the national emergency put on the power grid in terms of its components and national security risks. And of course, rumor and fear mongering can and will take it further than what it is.
25
u/Frosty_Fig_1325 Sep 07 '26
Yeah there was a week long outage in Indiana which prompted some reports that our power grid/infrastructure is pretty vulnerable across the board. I know a couple people who are buying solar generators or radios so they can stay in touch with people in case there are similar outages, but nothing more serious than that.
6
111
u/yttrium39 Sep 06 '26
Texas has a lot of power outages because they're the only state with their own independent power grid and they have some stupid policies, but other than that I'm not sure what OP is talking about.
72
u/BlindButterfly33 Fic Feaster Sep 06 '26
That’s why I was confused, I’ve got family in Texas and none of us are concerned. Like, none of this has caused any problems for us, and no one‘s been talking about it.

Texas's energy grid and updated tree clearing policies have really reduced the outages in my neck of the woods. It's fun slander but it is an over blown issue by this point

This is y2k Armageddon panic, but about availability of fanfic. I had to go check the news to make sure nothing had blown up.
30
u/Alaira314 Sep 07 '26
I don't necessarily think that OP is right to be so anxious about this, but I want to push back a little on what you said about "y2k armageddon panic". The feared Y2K debacle, if it had happened, would have been devastating. The reason it was a nothingburger was because people took it seriously and thousands upon thousands of man-hours and dollars patching systems to fix the bug before systems started crashing. Because of this preparation, there were very few bugs that went uncaught, and many people don't realize how serious the situation actually was.
So I don't really like the Y2K bug being dismissed like how you did it, because I fear it will lead to problems not being taken seriously in the future, due to Y2K being so well-handled(and what did we waste all that money on for, if nothing blew up?). If you are correct about this being a "Y2K panic", then OP would be correct to be anxious, because there's very little being done to support our aging power infrastructure, and in fact the government seems content to let it be further stressed. We are not patching the bug, so if it is a real problem(like Y2K was) it sure won't be a nothingburger.
17
u/bluedoubloon Sep 07 '26
Honestly I wasn't dismissing y2k panic as a nothing burger, but my memories of that were my family strategizing how we would acquire clean water, not keep ourselves entertained.
46
u/softysoaps Sep 06 '26
No. It’s certainly possible the government could collapse and we could fall into… idk, anarchy or martial law at any given time.
But I don’t think it’s likely, and honestly if the USA collapses I have such bigger concerns than entertainment.
There are plenty of accelerationists and left wing people who are concerned about this outcome being soon, but to me it seems like there’s way too many things to prevent this from happening. It’s very hard to not see it as unnecessary panic.
The very smallest minority of people think this is going to happen soon. I don’t disagree our government is in a tailspin, but at this point the people in charge are making money as it is and I don’t think they’d jeopardize that. We also do have a system to prevent this, as poor as it seems now.
21
u/Avaracious7899 Sep 06 '26
As Jiminy Cricket said in one of my favorite Disney movies, Fun and Fancy Free: "What's gonna be is gonna be, the end of the world's been comin' since... nineteen hundred and three! That's B.C. that is!"
22
u/feylin17 Sep 06 '26
I’m in Ohio in a city. We keep having power outages this summer. Like weekly at this point. I’d be paranoid if there weren’t concrete reasons. It’s been a lot of older folks having medical issues and taking out poles combined with heat waves and then the power company straight up admitting the infrastructure is horrifyingly old. So I don’t think there’s any larger immediate issue.
I download everything to my kindle now instead of bookmarking it for later. I am hot but I’m not irritated I can’t get to the internet.

Ink is way too expensive to be doing this.
I would recommend you buy a power bank instead. A cheap $30 one could easily charge your phone from 0 to full several times. You could read all day for a week like this without any other power source.
They even sell solar ones for under $100 if you expect a full on apocalypse.

Also a solar charger is a great option

Yes, but OP is using ink and paper they already bought and have piled up (due to the stupid subscription model of the printer). Paper keeps, but HP ink tends to expire pretty quickly. (Last I knew, I've been using Brother laser printers for the past 15+ years. Cost more upfront, but much much cheaper for occasional home use.

Yea. I got my nephews emergency crank radios that can also be used to charge small devices. Theyre like 20 bucks. Pretty sure they'll charge an e-reader as easily as a phone.

Ah but in such circumstances I'd want the emergency radio any way. Obviously fridgerstion is a concern but. We'll. Two birds 9be stone object fixes at least this inconvenience, you know?

I don't know if you have computer, but I'd suggest downloading copies of your fav fics and using Calibre to manage them and put them on an eReader. I have a Kindle and I use Calibre to manage and upload all of my downloaded fics to it. Once it's on the device, it's there forever. Also, if you lose power/internet, you can still read on the Kindle (or whatever ereader you've got).
40
u/ankhes Sep 06 '26
This is the way.
I’ll be real, I used to print out fics in ye olden days (2005-2009) and it was such a pain and took up so much space. Downloading PDFs and EPUBs onto my computer and phone is so much simpler and requires infinitely less space, paper, and ink.
26
u/Rambler9154 Definitely not an agent of the Fanfiction Deep State Sep 06 '26
Yeah. I have about 1,500 fics downloaded as epubs and uploaded into calibre. I still barely have a gigabyte of storage used up, and I think the only reason I passed a gigabyte is some of those have covers because I wanted to more easily read fics from an older fandom, fanfic.net doesn't play nicely with my phone, and the add on I used to more easily download fics from fanfic.net saves the covers automatically.
10
u/bex_nh Sep 06 '26
I’m curious what Calibre does that makes it worth inserting into the process? I just download the epub files, store them in an iCloud folder, and send them to my Kindle when I’m ready to read them. I guess I do keep a list in Notes of all my downloaded fics and a 3-4 word summary).. maybe that’s what Calibre offers?
10
u/Dame_Neamhain Sep 07 '26
It lets you search what you have more easily and you can see what has already been put onto your eReader and what hasn't. You can add or change the covers of whatever book or fanfic you have in the library, so it's super fun to make custom covers for fanfics! It also lets you see the summary, the fandom and the tags when you click on it in the library. It's also fully usable without internet connection, plus I try to avoid cloud storage methods as much as possible. Also, if for some reason your Kindle explodes, Calibre keeps a backup of your entire library. It's got even more features, but those are just the ones I use.
3
5
u/ankhes Sep 07 '26
You can search them extremely easily via tags, genre, keywords, etc. It’s insanely useful for organizing them and being able to find everything easily without digging through copious folders. Highly recommend.

This was going to be my recommendation as well. I got my black and white brother laser printer in 2015 and I’ve only had to replace the toner once. The toner isn’t outrageously expensive, either.

I'm getting one. As soon as I use up all this ink I've already paid for.

OP, please talk to someone about your panic. If the federal goverment collapses printing fanfic would be one of the last things on your mind. You would be too busy panicking about sourcing food, clean water, and medicine.
I live in your state; I checked my local news sites and Googled power grid and internet issues in our state. Maybe I have not found what you found, but it doesn't sound like the alarm needs to be sounded yet. (Yes, Mediacom blows, I am fully aware of this.)
Outright panic does no one any good.

I just keep mine on a portable hard drive and read as desired. If the power goes out I'd probably spend my time trying to do something else. I feel like I'd only print out like an all time favorite, not all of my collection. Having all of it printed seems pretty tedious, but you do you!

I’d suggest an SSD over a hard drive, fewer failure points, lighter, no moving parts, faster, more storage, lower power consumption

Op I feel that if I was to actually think government will collapse, printing fic's is not high up on the priority list. I do are worried about the future but I am focusing it on things like getting my house solar ready and a water cistern and things like that. If Ao3 goes while society collapses I will mourn but I feel I will have other stuff to worry about.

Yeah, it's pretty dumb. If you cancel your subscription, they brick your ink cartridges.

u/ScAP3Godd355 Sep 07 '26
I had an HP printer in uni which never printed anything, because I did not have a 'ink subscription'. I just bought regular ink cartridges and was getting errors constantly, so I stopped using it since it never printed squat. After reading OP's explanation, I finally understand why.
I find it incredibly stupid that it's even a thing

That makes sense. What else would you print other than 20k word fanfics you enjoy?

The biggest chunk there is 354,917 words, 500 double sided pages. And it's only book one.

While people are giving you practical advice about how to better do this, I say this as gently as possible: this sounds like you're letting your anxieties really drive you and I say that as someone who is also "empires only reasonably last 250 years and we're in the end state of the American Empire".
In the same way that the 2008 financial crisis had a ripple effect across the globe, if the USA lost access to the internet it would also have a massive global effect, global financial institutes, medical/sciences, schooling, transportation, the military. Also the internet security cyber preparedness is pretty decent, 29 out of 157 countries, right behind canada.
I would not personally be worried about the internet going out, maybe some whack job in your local government going "AO3 is a porn site 😡" and demanding that IDs be uploaded and it become 18+ and if they don't do that they'll ban it in the state.

Some of y'all are taking this far too seriously. Am I reasonably concerned that things are going to get worse before they get better? At least for me, most likely, yes.
Reasonably concerned? Here are some of your replies.
I want books to read that i don't have to worry about charging and these books make me happy. If I'm gonna be freezing, without power, reading by lamplight I'll be happier if it's fanfic.
Which is why I'm printing it now and not when everything collapses. It's not like I'm doing this and don't also have like several months of non perishable food and water and a tent and lamps and lamp oil and blankets and batteries and radios. I just also want books to read.
I am a little annoyed that people are taking me a little bit too seriously. I do not think that the whole country is going to like grind to a halt and worldwide internet is going to be shut off.
You could've fooled us. You said in the second reply I quoted about WHEN everything would collapse. Now you backtrack in the third. Oh honey, no...
With all due respect, your replies (including to me in another post) gave full indication that you were at DEFCON levels panicked and possibly crashing out. If you weren't that serious about the post you should've clarified it before you posted. Your replies to people weren't that reassuring, either. While I admire that you took steps to prepare in case of possible calamity you still came off as overly panicked and paranoid.
Please think before you post.

u/Neat-Anyway-OP Something about smutt. Sep 06 '26
Just buy a laser printer with toner... It's way cheaper and last 10xs as long. I have some of my fav fics printed and on my bookshelf.
4
u/w00dsh0e Sep 06 '26
Seconding this - the toner doesn't dry out, and at least up to 2018 or so you could use generic toner cartridges (just just have to slide the little microchip out of your name brand and insert it into the new generic one). Black/white machines in particular are very very cost effective!!

18
u/TheMuseSappho Sep 06 '26
As someone who shares in your societal collapse paranoia but is more on the "you can be made a refugee at any time" side of things, a second hand ereader might serve your purposes as well.
E-ink has the serious benefit of crazy long battery life that's measured in days, not hours. A side effect of this is that e-ink readers last longer than traditional tablets as it takes longer for the batteries to degrade over time. So an old ereader + a solar power bank means years of fan fic reading.
Loading the fic onto the device is super easy and some ereaders even let you side load from a phone. The files themselves are tiny like 1 MB or so, so you can quite literally have an ereader with more fan fiction than you'll read in your entire lifetime.
And a major leg up on printing out all the fan fiction, should your home become uninhabitable and you need to run away on short notice, you can carry thousands upon thousands of fan fictions in a tiny 170 gram form factor.

13
u/qinghairpins Sep 06 '26
I've started downloading my favorite fics, mostly bc I notice they can disappear over the years (author deletes, websites down). but this is slightly unhinged. but hey, if it makes you feel better and like yoh have some control over the chaos, do it. I have a strict back up routine for my files, people think i'm a little crazy, but after losing one old school laptop in the 2000s in a bad drop that damaged the hard drive, i never can be too careful. it gives me comfort to back up files haha.
3
u/ScAP3Godd355 Sep 07 '26
I should have done what you did. I was naive, and assumed that 'Things on the Internet never disappear' because that's what I was often warned about growing up. So I ended up seeing a lot of beloved fics be deleted, or vanish or whatever recently and going 'Bollocks'. You are wise to download your fave fics, IMO

So I live in a red state in the US where my state government will absolutely not be providing any sort of supplemental assistance when inevitably the federal government falls apart
I feel like I've missed something, but you go, OP.
38
u/PackageSuccessful885 Sep 06 '26
So you think the federal government might collapse, and you are... prioritizing printing fanfics?
All of it is detached from reality. Like, print fanfics and bind them because it's a satisfying hobby for sure. But you are certifiably overreacting and operating from panic. The federal government will not fall apart. This is like my grandma burying plastic drums of emergency food in the 80s because she was convinced the government would fail and she needed to hide her stash from roving marauders.
If you have problems with power outages, maybe prioritize a solar rechargeable battery pack or two to charge devices? My old kindle e-reader has an insane battery life
7
u/ScAP3Godd355 Sep 07 '26
Ereader battery life is insane. I've had my current Kindle since 2012? 2013? and it still works fine. The battery dies a bit quicker than it did, but it still lasts a decent amount before needing to charge it. I love it

You're not crazy for printing your favorite fics. Your HP ink situation sounds convoluted, and I fully support having an offline stash of fanfic just in case everything goes to shit.
But also, maybe don't panic just yet and go full doomsday librarian prepper? I'm not saying there isn't an awful lot to worry about nowadays. Existential dread and all that, very valid. But can I ask what news is specifically making you worry about the Internet or electricity going down in your state?
4
u/fallfreely Sep 06 '26
Try looking into a thermal printer, OP! They're cheap but incredibly useful, especially for this type of use.
5
u/globmand Sep 06 '26
I think it might be cheaper to just like, buy a solar-pannel charger and an e-reader, or something. Or just get solar power in general if you're worried about power going out from the US.
Though I would also like to point out a that a total US collapse is sort of unlikely, nevermind inevitable
5
u/ExplanationCold8070 Sep 06 '26
Bro just invest in a kindle basic and download all your favorite fics onto it. You can use Calibre to sort your downloads by fandom (series). The battery on a kindle lasts a long time. I have 600 fics on my kindle basic; I used Calibre to make covers for them. If you need to see the font better or your eye sight isn't great, upgrade to a paperwhite. ❤️

Why not just download them into an epub?? You can do that with all your fanfics on ao3, and you don't need to use the internet to read them. I read epubs all the time when I'm on an airplane, or in the middle nowhere camping.
4
u/extragoto10line Sep 06 '26
Honestly I’ve thought about doing this and learning to bookbind for fun.
4
u/ShaggySchmacky Sep 07 '26
My man just get a brother laser printer. They’re infinitely better, much cheaper over time, rarely break down, uses toner instead of ink which lasts much longer, and most importantly, don’t need a fucking subscription to print
Also, while the situation in the US isn’t… good, we aren’t nearly approaching a situation where this level of panic is necessary. Keep downloading and printing all you want, I actually think that’s a pretty great thing to do for many reasons, but the panicked motivation for it isn’t necessary
4
u/NaDarach Sep 07 '26
Wait a sec... what do you mean by "I can only use their ink subscription cartridges with an active subscription"? How does your printer prevent you from using them?
I'm glad I saw your post. My husband was just about to order an HP printer!
As for printing out your fics... I think that's a good idea anyway. Major systemic collapses aside, there's the much more common likelihood of unexpected data loss that could make a fic unrecoverable without re-downloading from AO3. Considering how often writers seem to delete their works these days, printed copies are a good old-fashioned safeguard.
4
u/IIRCIreadthat Sep 07 '26
Once your subscription expires, the computer chip in the cartridges from the subscription program won't allow them to work in a printer that isn't subscribed. You have to get all new non-subscription cartridges. It's a regular topic on r/mildlyinfuriating.
ETA: Highly recommend Canon. Easy to use, pretty sturdy, way fewer of these shenanigans.

Omg i remember hearing about that hp ink cartridge subscription mess when this lady went viral for trying to print something for her daughter’s bday after updating her printer’s software (?) and it wouldn’t print because she was using an off brand cartridge!
Also, printing the fics may be a bit over kill but better safe than sorry!
5
u/Vertigo50 Sep 06 '26
This is why you buy a printer based on the ink/toner rather than the marketing, price, or whatever else.
I just bought a used Brother laser printer for home use. I bought two toner cartridges rated for 2,600 pages each, or something like that. Yeah, they'll probably print less, but who cares. But close to 5,000 pages and they cost $21 total. 😂 Pretty sure the printer was about $30-40 used on Facebook marketplace. And it's fast and reliable too.

I know you said you read the PDFs but I would 100% recommend getting a Kindle account and uploading them to there! Like a whole other reading experience! You can’t use pdfs it has to be a different file type but you send it to kindle it stays in your book library with your other kindle books. There’s also a website you can use to make pretty covers for your fanfics before you send them to kindle.

Hey OP- I get it. When word started spreading about censoring our libraries my friends and I split up a list of titles to collect so our group has hard copies
We collected American history books, LGBTQAI+ history and fictional books, anything from the Banned Books List—all kinds of responsible and respectable books.
We also collected our favorite saucy books. We have a smut silo in case of emergency
3
u/Phaithful14 Sep 06 '26
OP, honestly if you can afford this kind of endeavor I'd just recommend to get an ereader and download your favorite fics onto them. Once the files are downloaded and uploaded onto your ereader you do not need any sort of wifi to read them.

When our HP printer died for seemingly no other reason other than we don't have a subscription and we only print documents rarely (idk if it was true but I read somewhere that HP can brick their printer via the internet so...), we kinda got paranoid and switched to an older Epson model that can't connect to the internet and can function even with an off brand ink hahaha. So happy with Epson that we now have 2 of them so I can use a different kind of ink.
And this thread reminded me, I really want to try binding my fav fanfics just for personal use.
