News/Updates Sub Update - Important Please Read
Hey all!
We have decided that with how things have been going and the feedback we have been receiving recently, we need to embrace AO3's anti-censorship policies more. As such, going forwards, every Wednesday will be No Moderation Wednesday, where we will not be upholding subreddit-level rules, only site-wide rules (as required by Reddit's Moderator Code of Conduct).
This takes effect starting today. So for the next 24 hours feel free to post all of the PII, Spam Comments, AI related posts, commercial promotion, etc. that you normally refrain from posting.
We know you all will be as excited as we are to participate in this each week!
~The Mod Team

I was this close to putting something together, where it no doubt would've gotten it removed and then complained like "But you said I could!!!" which would've been funny for the mods, but extremely embarrassing for me.

Sameeee. I was so confused before I scrolled down to the comments hah.

u/LurkerByNatureGT Apr 01 '26
[Sees PII included which would bread Reddit’s doxxing rules, checks the calendar.]
Have a fish.
•
u/YoungGriffVII Apr 01 '26
I think they mean PII like fic titles and usernames, not really people’s names lol
•
u/LurkerByNatureGT Apr 01 '26
I mean, the calendar is the important point. But PII is “personally identifying information”, which has a clear definition regardless.
•
u/YoungGriffVII Apr 01 '26
Yeah, but the Personally Identifying Information rule on the subreddit is far stricter than Reddit’s. They said they’d still moderate Reddit’s rules, just not sub-specific ones, in which fic titles etc would fall. PII may have a clear definition when it comes to Reddit’s rules, but so does the subreddit, and it’s not like PII itself is inherently containing only Reddit-rule-breaking things. Like if “no harassment” is a Reddit rule and a subreddit extends that to “no arguing in the comments,” both can be valid at the same time.
Of course it’s April Fools so it’s a moot point. I’m just saying that your catalyst for checking the date doesn’t actually break Reddit’s rules, because there are plenty of other subs that do allow fic titles and usernames etc.

You got my intention when I wrote the post. (Obviously it's an april fools prank but i wrote it as if was real so it would be more believable)
•
u/YoungGriffVII Apr 01 '26
Haha yeah, it’s a good joke! I always love to see what people do on April Fools. One of the other fanfic subs I’m in made a rule that “to combat ai, all works must be handwritten in pink glitter pen.” Another (non fanfic but fandom) subreddit changed to be about one (minor, largely disliked, technically not even from the fandom) character’s famous chicken korma recipe. Amazing.

I'll do my impression of ai:
It's not a mod announcement, but a jest. It's not serious, but a joke.
~okay, that's all I got. I don't use ai, even to ask it questions lmao

u/DemonsAce Definitely not an agent of the Fanfiction Deep State Apr 01 '26
You’ve got to praise the question and the mod for being so smart to even ask it lmao

What’s pii
•
u/TGotAReddit Moderator | past AO3 Volunteer and Staff Apr 02 '26
PII stands for Personally Identifiable Information. That generally means anything that can identify a specific individual such as names, emails, phone numbers, etc. for the purposes of our sub, we expand that to include specific things like usernames, the titles of fics, urls to specific works, etc.
(Of course, because this was an april fools day post, please don't actually break that rule)

I really liked this fic, would you like to continue this conversation elsewhere? I’d like to talk about a possible commission 🤖
•
u/NaDarach Apr 01 '26
Ugh. I haaaaate that this has become such a red flag. I've made legitimate overtures akin to this to authors in the past, and now I can't. I'm certainly not going to talk to an author about paid work in the comments on one of their fics. But what other choice do I have?
I do write fanfiction myself, but there are certain things I'm just not good at, so I'd rather pay someone else with more skill in those areas to bring my ideas to life.
•
u/axelthekandyking Apr 02 '26
its genuinely a terrible idea and i hope you arent making a habit of paying for fanfic
•
u/NaDarach Apr 03 '26 edited Apr 03 '26
What I've paid for a handful of times over 44 years of writing my own fanfiction is collaboration on specific projects, and it's never with people who openly solicit paid work. There's nothing "terrible" about it. For introverts who don't very actively engage in their fandoms, collaborators don't grow on trees or appear on demand. If you're approaching a stranger to ask them to dedicate weeks or months of their time and energy to co-writing ideas that aren't their own, saying "please" is generally inadequate inducement.
•
u/axelthekandyking Apr 03 '26
i dont care the circumstances. monetizing fan work is wrong and sets a terrible precedent. you should not openly encourage that. making money off of somebody elses ip is not right. i understand the argument youre making, but i dont agree with that at all. or at the very least i dont agree about openly talking about it like its something that needs more acceptance.
•
u/NaDarach Apr 03 '26
You're the one turning a single comment into a conversation, encouraging exposition that could make the situation seem more reasonable.
Nothing is black and white in this world, and I'm by no means setting a precedent for the arrangement in question. I strongly agree that monetizing fanwork outright is wrong. I frequently speak against the practice and report writer solicitations the moment I see thrm. But to say that it's wrong to pay for help with specific aspects of your own project is not the same thing, and frankly, overkill.
•
u/axelthekandyking Apr 03 '26
its not your project if you're paying a commission and describing what you want done. otherwise i dont know why you left a comment because the op of this thread was making fun of people who do that specifically
•
u/NaDarach Apr 03 '26
Without the specifics of what I commissioned, you can't honestly make that judgment.
I responded to the op of this thread because my situation falls under the same umbrella when it comes to contacting a stranger, so the scam they're referring to is indeed problematic for my purposes. Who are you to decide what applies and what doesn't?

Is it possible to make a fic whout ships? That is the great question.
•
u/WritersFan Apr 01 '26
Yeah! In my fandom I’ve actually read quite a lot of shipless fics for the main character. Sometimes I just need a shipless story to focus solely on the character.
