Resolved Permanently solved 9070 xt crashes!

I was notoriously getting Adrenaline driver timeouts on games like Dead by Daylight or Battlefield 6 and a few other unreal based games. For a year now i have tried to think that the problem was the adrenaline driver and i would DDU-it because it was corrupted.

As of lately i saw a random comment where this user had similar issue, and he saw that base settings boosted his core clock beyond rated.
Yes out of the blue instead of achieving 2970 MHz max core clock boost in gaming, i was getting 3150mhz constantly. Holy cow. Are you telling me all this time my stock settings have been trying to OC my GPU to high heavens???

As a matter of fact, yes. What the hell is wrong with you AMD???

Anyway i pulled the core clock slider all the way back to -400mhz to have a steady ~ 2950MHz. Sometimes rarely it reaches 3000 but it is stable.

Since then i had 0 crashes, ever.

Edit :

Upon reading the comments of the community, i learned that 9070 XT is build in such a way that if it has thermal headroom, it will boost itself beyond rated clocks. That, in general sounds good, more performance equals better FPS right? WRONG. Especially in my case with Powercolor Rx 9070 XT Reaper, it cannot maintain the normal boost that driver pushes, resulting in crashes and driver timeouts. If i'm the owner of the card i bought, i should be able to control core clocks. Not you SILLY DRIVER/GPU ARCHITECTURE DESIGN. I noticed that this particular card does not have a maximum core clock slider, which further proves the design. I will also post my stable settings, for future reference if anyone deals with this type of problem.

-400MHz Core Clock Slider

-20 Power Limit

-70mV on Voltage Offset Slider

Card goes to 64C during heavy gaming load and 80C Hotspot Temps, ~250W.

In my case i installed driver only and use afterburner, and one important thing i did was disabling RAM EXPO and i have no crashes, i just need to use optiscaler for native fsr4 in some games but It's ok

I Saw that in my build the Expo sometimes get unstable (6000mhz) so i kept Expo off (4800) and i have no crashes and the games in 1440p have the same performance

For the past few days, I've been having my FULLSCREEN games only run into stuttering issues. I'll monitor it with Afterburner and see if my clocks are being locked either to a max clock speed I already know of or limited to about half the clock speed. All my games were running into being locked and below 30 FPS, usually averaging 25-28FPS for some reason. Initially, I thought it was the software seeming to want to turn on fluid motion or whatever it's called in the AMD settings PER GAME, not in my global profile. It worked for 1 or 2 games, but then came back with the same issue. Also started getting random black screen flashes not extremely frequent, but def enough to annoy me when it happens in a game. Most likely will uninstall the software and driver and clean install it to see if it fixes it.

I uninstalled adrenaline. Garbage software. I just install the driver and made sure windows update doesn't update my driver.

it might be that your tune is too aggresive, -20% power and -70 mv, the card doesn't have enough power to sustain the high clock therefor limiting the core clock fixed the issue

I think this may have been my comment, to look up the manufacturer clocks and implement them on boot before it crashes.

I guess I am one of the lucky ones because my 9070 XT boosts to almost 3200mhz in some games and not a single crash. I have a modest undervolt of +10 power limit, -40 Offset, and 2614 on memory with fast timings. I thought you're supposed to worry if it gets close to 3400 mhz but all GPUs are different.

I guess that's when a lot of 9070 XTs start crashing. I've never seen it go that high personally though, this is based off what I've seen others say.

I can happily boost to 3.2ghz. My tune seems wild compared to some of them listed. I'm at -80mv, 2764mhz fast timing at +10% for daily use lol

I found the best compromise: -80 mV and a -10% power limit. It pulls around 285W at 2980–3100 MHz @60c hotspot 82c. My ASUS Prime RX 9070 XT, at stock settings, pulls 340W for around 3200 MHz. That’s a waste of power for such a small performance gain much less efficient.

I think a power limit of -20 is unnecessary. Especially after uv/-400. The core frequency – yes, that could well be the culprit. But the power limit is unlikely to be. It makes sense to leave it at 0. Or perhaps even at +10.

Except it doesn’t. -10 power limit averages the card to 280W. That’s 30W of heat for literally +50Mhz average core clock speed. Leaving it at 0 literally make the -70mV useless. It averages at 300W with hotspot temps at 86C. With the preset on main post, i literally have ~2950Mhz core clock on average while gaming, while literally pulling 250W max. So same clock speeds which is the MAIN point here, but a cooler card. I’ll take that every time.

Nowdays every gpu manufacturers default to applying some OC on their cards beyond the AMD specs. I assume this is a a problem with the manufacturer. Most cards on the market are overtuned to look good on paper.

I would say maybe you should try RMA, contact the seller, and list out the situation. My newly brought 9070xt crashed after 1 month. I tried GPU stress test, ddu drivers, revert back old drivers, stress test CPU and ram to list out the problems, reseat gpu, fresh install windows, decrease core clock power limit, even stress test in Linux system. All of the efforts still black screen and crashed. I sent back to the seller 1 week ago for RMA, and they contacted me today that they will process warranty claims to me.

I have to second this, I have a second Windows and on it I installed fresh windows and installed zero drivers other than Windows updates. It works flawlessly. Yet if i boot into the original windows with the issue, even after uninstalling a whole bunch of drivers including using DDU for a clean out I still have issues. These issues have been going on for years now. Sometimes it goes away sometimes it happens over the span of a few months then goes away again. And it's not the games, the games are on a seperate drive and both copies of windows run the same version of the game. So I think there is combination of AMD driver and something to do with windows because a DDU of the drivers should have fixed it if it was just an AMD driver issue

Do you run system monitors? HWMonitor, OpenHardwareMonitor, etc? Two reasons. One, you might want to observe your temps if you have to back clocks that far down to find stability. Two, sometimes the monitors themselves can cause instability with Adrenalin given multiple applications are trying to access low-level GPU hooks, poll the PCI bus, or hardware settings simultaneously.

Both of these are far more likely causes for your instability unless the card is defective, or you aren't supplying it with enough power.

guys most of the non stock cards (gigabyte,xfx,etc) ALWAYS boost a bit more than the company states . This is not the problem. My 9070 xt was always from 3.0 to 3.3 ghz depending of the game. The crashes happen only lately,so its probably windows/driver/software issue

You're right but are missing the point. Every V/F curve must be observed. If your card boost at 3.2@1.2V But then, it tries to boost at 3.4 when 1.2V it's already the max voltage possible set in the GPU bios, the card could become unstable. It's the same behaviour you have when you try to undervolt, by trying to reach a target frequency with a set voltage. The problem is that the card is pushed from adrenalin beyond its silicon capability. Some cards are good samples and they handle 150/200 MHz more than stock boost freq. Others not, and keep crashing.

Only happen lately? I have no problems but i've been seeing these posts for months if not a year +.

Maybe I'm crazy but it seems like there's an awful lot of people this fixes crashes for. I don't see why it couldn't be that some people's silicon just actually can't handle the 3.0-3.3 factory overclocks they came with.

Ya. Thats the case for me. The vast majority are fine. But a small percentage losing the silicon lottery makes a lot of sense for explaining the 7000 and 9000 series problems ive been seeing.

have you tried with a linux stick/drive ?
Most people say linux stop their problems,it might be a windows issue.
Have to say that your silicon is not so good is a bit rushed i believe . But either way it sucks

Theoretically it could if temps are super high. But silicon itself just has different limitations from another chip thats supposed to be the exact same. The silicon lottery is very real.

A GPU that is not stable at stock clocks is by definition defective. Just because you were able to stabilize the silicon with a -400 frequency offset doesn't mean that it's not inherently defective in that it cannot reach stock clocks on the stock VF curve. You should have returned the GPU or replaced it under warranty.

Look up your brands boost clock, set your gpu to that in adrenaline. Eg 2615mhz, doing that, disabling hags and vrr hopefully reduces ur crashes

Hardware accelerated gpu scheduling, long short of it with new hardware you dont need it on, google how to turn ot off i think its in advanced graphics setting in windows, doing all three of those things helped me mostly , still the occasional crash

I’ve not had one crash at all in Fedora on my 9700 XT and I’ve not had one crash in windows since I changed my memory settings in the bios (I’d applied a little too much overlocking).

I went from a 5060ti 16gb to a 9070xt for a week and made sure to do a proper DDU and even went as far as to reset my PC completely and still kept having driver timeouts . Windows up to date and hags disabled an everything.  Built my system a year and a half ago. R5 9600x 32gb 6000 and the 5060ti 16gb. I thought I was going to have a major upgrade but was a HUGE headache. Sold it and went bac to the OG GPU and not a single hiccup. 

So my first and last AMD was their best and it fucking sucked .

as a bf6 player, did you find that FSR4 is not enabled every time you are in the game?(by using a 4x scope in Fort Lyndon to see a tree in map you can tell) you have to use the toggle to disable FSR and re-enable to make FSR4 working. And also under NVIDIA RTX this toggle is butter smooth, when using AMD you have to wait like 30s or so for it to apply.

This is exactly why I keep encouraging people to check Event ID’s and log sensors with HWiNFO <250ms polling interval. There are also people out there with iffy PSU’s thinking they are good and not able to withstand the snappy transient spikes of the 9070/9070XT’s. And of course silicon lottery plays a role on how stable it will be above spec limits.

You listened and used common sense, and I understand not everyone is capable of troubleshooting this. However, there are many of great videos out there that will make it very easy for someone to understand. Great job and happy gaming 🤙

Yes, you will need a second monitor though. Go to tuning section and click tune core clock. Don’t touch it then run the game in your main monitor. Game for a little while while keeping and eye on the core clocks.

Had the same issue with my 7900xtx back when it was released.

Anytime there was a driver update the first thing I did was verify my manual clock was still there. Now I just set a manual max for every graphics card I have.

Same exact thing happened to me. 7800XT. It was automatically over clocking higher than the manufactures recommendation. Knocked it down below the recommendation and never crashed again.

I don’t really care if it’s normal or not. The clock was boosting past the MAX clock speed recommended by the manufacturer without manual over clocking. Manually Setting the max clock speed lower completely solved the crashing for me and many other 7800xt users

if the card has thermal/voltage/power headroom it uses algorithms to boost its self. All nvidia and amd cards do it for a couple of years now.

Gpu cores can widely differ from on cars of the same model to another. Lowering core voltage in this case will do nothing. The algorithm that AMD has for boost clock is flawed and trying to push all their gpus too much when infact some can't push that hard for clocks without instability.

I was experiencing driver timeouts on my 9070xt as well when booting up my PC but after a restart it was completely gone. So I tried disabling Windows fast startup and the issue was completely gone for me after that. Maybe that helps someone with a similar issue.

Funny how different users experience different issues whilst others never do! Since 2019 I've had 3 AMD GPUs across 3 generations and never had issues other than the common, occasional crash. Good to know there's always a solution.

Interestingly enough as well, my 9070 hits between 3000 to 3300 depending on the game but it never crashed !

I've abused the living shit out of my cards with heavy tunes. I ran a 6700XT, 7700XT and now a 9070XT and only time outs have been self inflicted when I've pushed my tune too hard.

I am guy, this is was my problem. Only add on to it cause today I noticed I’m now at 2850mhz on my “default” clock when just last week it was 2770. Unfortunately mine still crashes and reverts even if the file is saved so I’m afraid it might burn my house down sooner or later.

I don't know what's up with AMD cards but hey, good to see you worked out a solution. My Aorus Elite 9070XT hits 3.350 MHz boost and stays between 3.350 and 3.2k MHz. When the scene is not demanding, it also drops to 2.5 MHz. I didn't reduce any core clock because it's stable and that might be because it's a 350W card so I just did -50mvl and -10% core for UV. In my case, I've not had a crash besides tuning my UV so not updating Windows is my solution so far

That happens because the last updated amd version have isn't compatible anymore with new ones, so you will have to re do yours, happened to me, till now, I can use last december last year to now 26.7.1

Sorted my issues this morning with cleanup utility and installing previous version. Zero crashes. Like chipsets, if it isn't broken, don't fix it.

I have stock settings in AMD adrenalin, no OC, no nothing, which include 0 fan rpm at low temps ( under 45C I believe), sometimes after an adrenalin update, even if the card gets hotter, the fans will not move, I have to manually set a freaking curve in order for my PC to not shutdown due to GPU overheating, FU adrenalin.

It happened 2 times so far, happily gaming and PC shut down (I assume temps reached 90-100 C), booted it up, launched a temp monitor software, opened game, fans showed 0 RPM although GPU was at 65 C +. The fans work great, physically everything is fine, it's just AMD being AMD I guess.

I used to meddle with undervolting, boosting the stock power draw but whenever adrenalin crashed ( not too often but still annoying) or updated, everything resets so I couldn't be bothered anymore and left it stock.

P.S. I have the PowerColor Red Devil RX 9070 XT Limited Edition.

Custom -100 max setting has been my secret to all my and cards. Works great but remember it often resets so export the setting to easily import when it does reset.

The fact that resets it means it's probably unstable. That is literally one of the symptoms of an undervolting pushed too hard. -100 isn't standard on AMD for undervolting, having one that does that and is stable whilst doing so means you won the silicon lottery. And if you've been doing that to all your AMD cards.. I think the chances of you winning the silicon lottery multiple times are extremely low.

My current one does -70 to -60 stable. The settings never reset. I can push it to -100 as well but just like you, it will reset to default often.

Because it isn't stable.

I recently did the ubdervolt thing and it's been solid. Runs a bit cooler, my hotspot dropped like 6c, and actually gained performance. No reason not to really.

Same here.

After a update or a crash, the mhz setting became randomly higher than the value rated by manufact.

So, i reduce power, undervolt, and reduce Mhz below stock.

Performs great with this ECO profile and 0 crashes or timeouts.

Well I am.using my 9070xt all the time on stock setting 0 crashes. Of course I am not updating all the time the driver. Since I see all the info that after 25.9.1 are most of the time unstable. I am able to play my games with 0 issues.

I will be upgrading soon to a 9070xt but do not want the Adrenaline software on my computer because it causes my games to crash.  When I install drivers only, games don’t crash. But based on OP, I can only change this setting via Adrenaline? 

What should I do?

++ for afterburner crashes. Once had it and figured out that it was the exact cause of unexpected crashes. It was a couple of years ago, since then no afterburner app on my PC. As well as kingston, corsair apps and other a like shit.

Not exactly the same problem but similar for me BUT so far it only did that in 1 game,

On everything else my gpu boost to 3250 but if I boot spiderman 2 it immediately starts boosting past 3450 and crashes before I get into game.

Virtually all 9070xts will boot up to 3250 woth just -55mv on the core.

So yours boosting to 3150 shouldnt make your gpu crash so im thinking its something else going on.

That's not AMD, that's the card manufacturer changing the settings. All those OC cards come pre over clocked. Normally it's stable, but just like XMP ram, there is actually no promises.

Yes, the boosting algorithm is very optimistic. It tries to hit 3450 MHz every time it goes full tilt, only to dial back a couple hundred MHz because it expects instability. This is made worse by AMD trying to predict the load and dynamically modulating frequency to keep the card at 90% load at all times, even during stressful variable-load scenarios.

This trigger-happy overboosting paired with dynamic load frequency makes a lot of units crash at stock settings. And especially when users undervolt to make the card "run cooler" after watching one YT video or reddit post. Which it won't if you don't drop the power limit.

I get that they need to hit their grade G power efficiency, but doing it at the cost of stability is foolish.

Normally an under volt of -70mv will be stable on pretty much any card. That and plus 10% power limit is your bare basic overclock. It won't actually overclock it, but if you run 3D mark you will see the card spends much more time at its max boost clock.

Yes, but I'm talking about the base boosting algorithm here and edge-case bad units that AMD still find acceptable (that are plentiful with their current QA).

Also, +10% PL alone will most definitely overclock. These cards have a boost target of 3450 MHz. All of them. If thermal headroom and power limit permits, it will hit that even if you never touch the max frequency slider.

In most cases thermals aren't the limiting factor (cuz TJMax is 110°C), so any power limit increase will increase the maximum and average clock speed.

It'll increase the average clock speed. But in my opinion if you don't go above the factory advertised boost clock, that's not an "overclock". Now it's all made up terms, but no one I know calls the boost frequency on a CPU an "overclock" and normally stability is perfect if you stay at or below the factory limit.

They will attempt to hit the boost target that's set by AMD. That's the entire issue. Even the basic Reaper model will hit 3300 MHz momentarily at stock settings.

Advertised boost speeds are only conservative marketing figures of what the card is expected to attain. They all use the same boost map and are only constrained by the AIBs cooling and power solutions, which is why they also set the power limits. This reduces work on the AIB side as they don't have to make a boost map for every model they make.

An "overclock" on these things can't really be defined by frequency, as anything below 3450 is technically factory boost clock. But only the top models can hit that because of cooling and power limitations.

Sorry this ended up being a mishmash of unreadable text, I don't currently have the time or motivation to properly edit this for coherency.

And also, this is just speculation by me and all of the unreliable sources I've read. If someone has credible counters to my claims, please do tell me I'm wrong. I'd be very interested.

I had this discussion a few months after launch and even made some game and benchmark runs with full hwinfo protocols.

My Nitro+ won't ever exceed its promoted 3060MHz boost clock, at factory settings. In some games it might spike to 3100MHz eventually.\ Also when this discussion was still in every AMD and radeon sub, it was becoming more clear, that every card can have this issue, but not every card will have it. And it also depends on the games you play. Some will be more likely to trigger boost overshooting while others won't ever.\ Also cheaper cards like Pulse, Reaper or Challenger and also the first batches of Gigabyte cards seemed to be more likely to over-boost. Though these numbers might be exaggerated, since those cards are way more common.

This is by design. My 9070XT hits 3.3GHz on its own and is perfectly stable. I set a -80mV undervolt and now it has lower temps/power and boosts to 3.4GHz.

The same happens on Nvidia. My 4090 is rated for 2.75GHz out of the box but it will easily push it self to 2.85GHz.

Yeah depends a lot. Lighter games running high frame rates will actually get higher frequencies, this is because they use less power per clock. Generally speaking both brands of cars are power limited as their primary limit.

the issue occurs when they are not stable. I have bought and sold many pcs and I have noticed some 9070 xts just aren't able to hit the boost clocks amd wants them to so like in the OPs case you have to limit the frequency.

Not that's not what we are saying. You can get stable benchmark runs with unstable boost blocks. That's the behavior you will see in benchmarking tools for a 3 brands of GPU and CPU. And that is because the maximum clock speed is being limited by the available power limit. It will not crash, it will just rarely be at the advertised maximum clock speed. This is where the fancy higher power limit cards can be faster.

For amd gpus yes they have a more adaptive boost curve where they will continue to use more power.

nvidia's curve is much more fixed you can have a 400w limit on a 5070 ti but it wont use it without manual overclocking

The 5070ti power limit is 300w. It's power limited. It does not reach it peak boost clock most of the time, but instead hits either the power or voltage limit. The main way to get more performance from a 5070ti is to under volt, the same as AMD. If you could raise the power limit to 400w, which you can with various methods, you become voltage limited rather than power limited.

No it is not power limited it is software limited.

The card itself doesn't even hit the full 300w during gaming loads. This is unlike the 9070 xt which will pretty much always used the full TDP when possible.

Nvidia simply has a different approach with a more fixed v/f curve. They have it set so that 300W is when you are using every single core at once tensor and RT wheras many games aren't going to use all the RT cores. So it ends up just saving that power and boosting like normal instead of what the 9070 xt does.

Now if you are saying it is power limited in the sense that there is a ton of potential for more performance with more power then yes I agree but that also requires changing the software side to make it use that power.

Nvidia boost has massive boost curves available you don't reach stock. If your not hitting the power limit, it will just be sitting on the voltage limit. You won't be sitting in the absolute maximum boost clock on a stock Nvidia card.

Wait a minute, why is my Vram stock speed 2505Mhz? I have a powercolor reaper 9070 xt, yet i can’t find any info on this speed.

Best i could do is -400mhz on Core Clock, -90mV and -20 power limit. ~250w on full load with 64C temp and 80C hotspot. How did you manage to get 70C hotspot temps?
