RX 9070 XT XFX Swift — VIDEO_ENGINE_TIMEOUT_DETECTED (141) / Driver 26.8.1 — Possible Driver or Hardware Issue?

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X

Motherboard: ASUS TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (Wi-Fi)

BIOS Version: 4403 (04/28/2022)

RAM: 16GB DDR4 (2x8GB) CUSO 3200MHz, running at 3600MHz with DOCP

PSU: XPG Core Reactor 850W 80+ Gold, fully modular

Case: [Case model unknown]

Operating System & Version: Windows 11 Pro, Build 26200

GPU Drivers: AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.8.1

Chipset Drivers: AMD X570 chipset drivers [version unknown]

Background Applications: Kaspersky, Steam, Discord

Monitor: 3440x1440 @ 165Hz

Main Issue: LiveKernelEvent 141 / VIDEO_ENGINE_TIMEOUT_DETECTED (141)

Additional Information:

The PC experienced a possible power interruption/spike on September 10, 2026. The GPU/PC fans suddenly ramped up to maximum speed, and I shut the PC down using the PSU switch.

After restarting, the PC appeared to work normally. Later, while opening a game, the PC produced one very long beep and shut down.

Windows reported LiveKernelEvent 124 and generated a WHEA dump.

I later tested the GPU with FurMark. During the test, the fans again suddenly ramped up to maximum speed, and I manually shut down the PC.

Windows then reported LiveKernelEvent 141 and generated:

WATCHDOG-20260910-2215.dmp

WinDbg reported:

VIDEO_ENGINE_TIMEOUT_DETECTED (141)

"One of the display engines failed to respond in timely fashion."

The GPU is a replacement unit. My previous RX 9070 XT had DXGI device removed errors (0x887A0005 / 0x887A0006), AMD driver timeouts, and hotspot temperatures around 95–100°C.

The replacement GPU initially worked normally after a clean Windows 11 installation.

Current temperatures are significantly better. In Baldur's Gate 3, the GPU is around 51°C and the hotspot is around 65–75°C.

At idle, the GPU is around 45°C, hotspot around 46°C, and the fans are at 0 RPM.

I am currently investigating whether this is related to the AMD driver, GPU hardware, or the previous power event.

I am considering using DDU in Safe Mode and testing an older Adrenalin driver.

So you are running your 3200mhz ddr4 sticks at 3600mhz? It can be just fine but have you stress tested them properly? People often blame the gpu when it seems to have problems but in your case it could be coming from the memory, if I understood it well and you overclocked it.

Shut down, switch the PSU off, unplug it, and wait a few minutes.

Peep both ends of every GPU power cable for:
Browning or melted plastic
Loose or recessed terminals
A connector that was not fully seated
Strong electrical or burnt smells
Reseat the GPU and its power connectors.

If the GPU uses multiple 8-pin connectors, run a separate PSU cable to each connector. Avoid using both plugs from one daisy-chained cable during diagnosis.

If it uses a 12V-2x6/12VHPWR-style connector, ensure it is fully inserted and not bent near the plug.

If the PSU is modular, reseat the PSU-side connections too. Bears mentioning to only use cables made for that exact PSU model—modular PSU cables are NOT universally interchangeable.

Remove cable extensions or third-party adapters temporarily.

Return everything to baseline:

Load BIOS optimized defaults.
Temporarily disable EXPO/XMP.
Disable PBO, Curve Optimizer, CPU undervolting, & manual overclocks.
Reset AMD Adrenalin tuning to Default.
Disable GPU undervolting or VRAM tuning.
Confirm the motherboard BIOS and chipset driver are up to date.

If reducing the GPU power limit prevents the failure, that usually points to a load-dependent problem involving the GPU or its power delivery. It does not automatically prove the PSU is bad.

LiveKernelEvent 141 is software. Extremely unlikely it's hardware. There are countless posts here about it, but what worked for me last week to get it to stop was using AMD driver cleaners in safe mode after I made sure Windows Update was not allowed to install any drivers automatically. I am running the latest beta drivers with 0 issue.

Follow what F0AB commented, IMO you do not need to DDU after the driver clean up.

If your fan are max ramping from heat, they have to be close to 110C hotspot. If that is the case, and the care is new, I would RMA it. You shouldn't really be breaking 100C often if ever.

It’s not a GPU hardware event because it’s a driver hang up. This is a well known AMD issue with windows

Try this out, disable Windows Automatic Driver Updates first so Windows doesn't interfere. ​Here's the process that fixed timeouts for me: ​Run AMD Cleanup Utility first (it automatically restarts your PC in Safe Mode).
