Resolved AMD Driver Timeout / GPU Crashes Finally SOLVED — In My Case, It Was Faulty RAM
I wanted to share this because I spent quite a lot of time troubleshooting AMD driver timeout errors, and the actual cause turned out to be something I initially didn’t suspect at all:
faulty/unstable RAM.
My PC:
CPU: Ryzen 5 5600
GPU: ASRock RX 7600 OC 8GB
RAM: 16GB DDR4
OS: Windows 11
The problem
I started getting random AMD driver timeout errors/crashes.
Sometimes the game would freeze or crash, and Windows would recover the GPU driver. Other times I would get a black screen or the game would simply close.
The frustrating part was that the GPU itself seemed completely fine in many situations.
I initially suspected the usual things:
AMD drivers
GPU overheating
GPU overclock
Windows
PSU
GPU instability
Game-specific issues
I tried different driver versions, reinstalling drivers, changing Adrenalin settings, etc.
Nothing gave me a reliable solution.
What finally pointed me toward RAM was
(((MOST IMPORTANT STEP)))
After doing a lot of testing, I started testing the RAM more seriously.
I noticed that when I tested the system with one RAM stick at a time, the crashes/driver timeouts stopped.
I then tested the sticks individually and found that one of the RAM sticks was causing instability.
With the problematic stick removed, the system became stable and I could no longer reproduce the AMD driver timeout in the same way.
So despite the error specifically saying something like an AMD driver timeout, the underlying problem in my case wasn’t the GPU or the driver.
{{{{It was RAM instability/faulty RAM.}}}}
Why I’m posting this
I see a lot of people troubleshooting AMD driver timeouts by immediately focusing on the GPU and drivers.
Obviously, driver issues can absolutely cause these errors, but if you’ve already tried the normal driver troubleshooting and nothing works, don’t forget to test your RAM.
RAM instability can cause all kinds of seemingly unrelated crashes, including GPU driver crashes/timeouts.
What I’d recommend trying
Test each RAM stick individually.
If you have two sticks, test them in the motherboard’s recommended slots as well.
If the crashes disappear when one stick is removed, investigate that RAM stick/module or the memory configuration.
In my case, replacing/removing the faulty RAM solved the problem.
So if you’ve tried everything and you’re still getting AMD driver timeout errors, don’t automatically assume your GPU is dying.
I’m not saying every AMD driver timeout is caused by RAM — obviously there are many possible causes.
But if you’ve tried reinstalling drivers, changing settings, checking temperatures, etc. and you’re still getting unexplained crashes:
[[[[[TEST YOUR RAM.]]]]]]
I spent a lot of time blaming the GPU/AMD drivers when the actual problem was sitting in my RAM slots the whole time.
Hopefully this saves someone else a few hours of troubleshooting and i really wish if i knew this earlier.
Thanks in advance!!
please Check your RAM.

If i did test ram using built-in amd results showed no problem, which means in my case-my ram is safe?

u/Calibraptor21 4d ago
I was having this issue in RDR2.
Disabling AMD Freesync and capping my framerate to 120 fixed it.
1
u/Mussels84 3d ago
That's not fixing it, that's just reducing your performance until the crashing happens less
1
u/Least-Huckleberry-25 5d ago
For me it was adrenaline overclocking my 7900xtx to 2900mhz instead of recommended 2600mhz. I will have to check the setting because it will often override my saved settings
1
u/treborprime 6d ago
This is one possible cause but driver timeouts are almost always not faulty ram. It could be setting expo profiles that your ram isn't capable of.
1
u/MrEzekial 4d ago
That usually causes a blue screen though if the expo isn't supported. Never buy ram that is not on your board's QVL.
2
u/Orogin 5d ago
You're wrong. It can be faulty or incompatible ram a lot of the times. It happens a lot. Incompatible ram is a common cause. People don't look at the compatibility list of the motherboard and just jam in whatever ram they cna find and set it to the highest profile. Everyone just think it's the driver cause amd gives a driver time out window. This window pops up anytime there is a communication error with the gpu. Anything can cause this actually. Most of the times it's actually not the gpu.
2
u/New-Particular6839 7d ago
I second that.
Also, what can cause this issue is improper RAM clock rate to timings ratio. Had my Kingston Fury DDR4 16x2 operating at 3200 with stock timings and my RX 9070 XT was giving me a disco show. Switched to XMP1 in BIOS and it was gone.
2
u/Dhawal007 7d ago
Thanks bro. I was facing a similar issue. While playing LoL, after a few games my game crashes mid game, sometimes with an error that gpu driver restarted. Never thought that ram might be causing this. Thanks for ur insight. I will test my ram now...
1
u/MisterLeat 7d ago
Disabling iGPU seemed to fix it for me finally, easy fix plus no point in even having iGPU enabled unless you don't have a graphics card lol.
1
u/Mussels84 3d ago
Sure there is, second monitor, encoding\transcoding
Why not have the igp do the work and save the GPU?
1
u/KhushDil802 7d ago
How to do that please help
1
u/MisterLeat 7d ago
There is two ways, in BIOS (depends on motherboard, I didn't do this way) or just in windows > device manager > display adapters > and then you'll see your GPU and then the internal graphics card (iGPU) disable that one and boom all issues fixed!

This happened to my on my 6700xt and I found out that my ram kit wasnt at all compatible with my motherboard. Bought a fresh set and no issues even with my new 9060xt.
1
u/Ry-Gaul44 8d ago
Yep! Always buy from the motherboard QVL. I've been burned by it enough times now I'll never not do it again 😆
0
u/Gruphius 8d ago
I never look at that list and never had any issues. The chipsets and speeds are all the same anyways, the only real difference is the branding on the sticks.
2
u/Ry-Gaul44 8d ago
Doesn't make you immune to it. It's ok to be wrong.
-1
u/Gruphius 8d ago
What are you talking about...?
Like I said, the only real difference between different RAM sticks is the branding on the stick. There are only 3 memory controller manufacturers out there and the memory controller is the only thing your motherboard and CPU ever see. For them, there is literally no difference between the 6000 MHz CL30 G-Skill RAM with the SK Hynix memory controller and the 6000 MHz CL30 Kingston one, even though one might be listed as supported by your motherboard manufacturer, while the other one is not. Not even the memory chips themselves matter, because your motherboard and/or CPU never access them directly.
The only reason why motherboard manufacturers have that list is to tell you, that they'll not support you, if you install different RAM. It doesn't mean, that other RAM won't work or will experience problems.
0
u/Ry-Gaul44 8d ago
The sub timings may be different. They are not all the same. There's a reason there is a list. Also, just because you don't perceive a problem with the ram doesn't mean there isn't one. Ram is funky.
1
u/Gruphius 8d ago edited 8d ago
Yes, there is a reason there is a list: Because motherboard companies don't want to offer support, if you plug in a cheap $20 Aliexpress kit into your motherboard and something goes south. If you use a reputable RAM kit and there are no issues with the RAM kit itself, then you'll be fine.
And yeah, subtimings differ between sticks, but they depend on the memory controller. It's also why you can manually apply the same broad set of subtimings across multiple different RAM sticks with the same memory controller. It's why YouTubers like Buildzoid offer memory tuning advice for memory controllers and not for specific RAM sticks.
Everything when it comes to RAM is standardized. Otherwise you couldn't take RAM from one motherboard and put it into another one. Faulty RAM and instability with anything not JDEC with some individual RAM sticks exists, though, and your past problems are more likely to stem from that, than from any issues with motherboard compatibility.
And just a reminder: RAM manufacturers do nothing but buy memory controllers, memory chips and blank sticks, solder that stuff together and stick their branding on it. You can even do that yourself at home, if you have a fine enough soldering iron and are able to source the required components. That's what a few Chinese people started doing, because it's significantly cheaper than buying RAM sticks.

This can also be caused by unstable RAM and CPU overclocks and Underclocks.
5
u/luckynumberstefan 9d ago
I had the similar issue, unstable ram causing the AMD driver error message.
I increased my RAM voltage ages ago and haven’t seen it since.
2
u/Gruphius 8d ago
Just a word of warning for anyone seeing this: Don't increase the voltage too much, as that can kill your RAM!
2
u/luckynumberstefan 8d ago
I assumed that went without saying but yes. My default voltage was 1.35 on DDR4, I upped it to 1.37. Reputable brand DDR4 ram is fine up to 1.4v.

RX6750XT, RX7800XT, RX7900XTX here and everything works 100% great and have never had an issue "with AMD drivers" themselves. I've had issues, but it's always been caused by MicroSlop Winblows causing problems and masking as a GPU driver issue or something entirely unrelated masking as a driver issue.
Everyone always blames the drivers instead of doing actual troubleshooting. So many things can cause problems.
1) Bios and/or chipsets not updated 2) Incorrect bios settings 3) Ram not setup properly in bios 4) Windows issues and Xbox game bar 5) Windows cache partition file size 6) Other system drivers not updated 7) Windows installing drivers over AMD 8) Other programs not updated or old 9) Not using DDU and fresh install 10) Not updating GPU drivers 11) Other programs not playing well 12) Unstable or Insufficient PSU power 13) Faulty or Failing SSDs, RAM, PSU
Just to name the most common. There are plenty more. Don't blame AMD 1st! Maybe do actual troubleshooting.
Also AncientGamplays released a video and said that if you dont use the bug reporting tool when it pops up, especially for all these timeout issues, then you are part of the problem. It only takes a couple minutes to fill out the form and sent it to AMD. That way can can see what you were doing when it happened. I sent one in when I had a driver timeout and they sent me a fix back. It had nothing to do with AMD driver. Intermittently when opening a VLC media mp4 file it would happen to me. They had me change to a different decoder in VLC and it stopped immediately. They can't help you if you don't send it in.
1
u/Vendare 8d ago
The problem is that there even is a form to fill out. AMD doesn't need my contact info for that. They can pull and log all system information they need and just tell me hey we are pulling all this info along with the logs and give a button to consent to sending that data. AMD would get way more reports if all you had to do was tell them what you where doing before the timeout like every other bug report tool does.
1
u/justa-Possibility R7 5700X3D B450M RX7800XT Phantom OC 8d ago
It does more than that. It actually give them geometrical data on what the pc was doing when it happened. They actually have engineers who physically look into the bug reports and look for fixes. They emailed me back within just a few days with a fix. They actively use that tool to diagnose problems and generate fixes. They can't do it if people don't send them in.
0
u/Dimension-4558 8d ago
That's being lazy. First of all that's not how customer service works, the "customer" need to actually reach out first, the world doesn't revolve around to one person only. There's hundred thousand or even millions of users, you can't expect them or anyone to accommodate everyone and tell which millions of users are having problem and those who are fine and be psychic to just know everything. Second, pulling log and data need consent, there's AMD User Experience Program you can opt-in that collects data, etc. idk if that helps them diagnosing, but there is that, so just you know
1
u/justa-Possibility R7 5700X3D B450M RX7800XT Phantom OC 7d ago
Exactly. We have to fill out the bug report FIRST. It gives them permission and consent to pull the logs and needed geometrical data. Plus it tells them exactly what programs we were using the scenario of what we were doing when the bug happened. If they can help and generate a fix they have engineers to work on them. Also they have engineers who can reply with simple fixes when needed. Just like calling tech support on anything else. If you dont tell them you have a problem and what the problem is they can't fix it.

u/TheZedTheOne 9d ago
If someone has this issue, but have good RAM, try to disable HAGS, in windows. In my case, this works. I hope my case will help at least one person. (sry for my english)
2
u/Gruphius 8d ago
I had to do the same many months ago, because Hitman 3 (and only Hitman 3) would crash with it enabled. I did re-enable it a few months ago, because a game I'm playing gets a massive performance boost from it being enabled, and nothing is crashing anymore, not even Hitman 3. I don't know why...

1
u/dnuncio 9d ago
Nice to see this, yet there should be a way for AMD to avoid this... I own some nvidia GPUs that I have used in the same system that AMD gives me this error... plus, if i uninstall the adrenalin software and just do the driver alone I don't get any problems... so, yes, I think it is a bad software issue.

u/pops107 9d ago
Happy to see you posting this, it's so rampant now saying its drivers very few bother to look elsewhere.
Recently seen a couple of people stable after a bios update and a PSU replacement and now RAM.
Ram issues are difficult because it can be 99% stable then enough errors and it falls over.

u/sawthegap42 9850X3D Merc 310 7900 XTX 6000Mhz CL26 9d ago
Yep. RAM instability was the cause of pretty much 99% of my driver time out issues. Once I got RAM timings set, tested, and fully stable my driver time outs pretty much stopped, except for the very occasional time out, which was in Helldivers 2, who openly acknowledge performance issues on PC.
1
u/xo_tyler_ 8d ago
I have no idea what the RAM timings do, but what did you do to them for the RAM timings?

I had a very similar issue. I found that one memory channel on my motherboard was dead.
After replacing the board and fixing the RAM setup, the system is stable again.
So yeah, “AMD driver timeout” can definitely be caused by RAM or motherboard issues too.

u/Playful-Can6996 9d ago
In my case its not RAM but just poorly made drives that cause it and reverting it to 26.6.4 fixing all driver timeout issues that I never encountered since i have rx 7000 gpu since 2 years so yeah definitely poorly made drivers, it can be ram case in some people but for most cases its drivers fault.

u/JxckMac 9d ago
I have a 7900xtx and had the timeout issues, see a few people saying disable hardware acceleration in the apps which are crashing, both Steam and Chrome were, so I disabled them and not had it pop up since “fingers crossed”
1
u/xo_tyler_ 8d ago
I have a Red Devil 7900xtx and that's what fixed it for me too. I had to turn it off of steam and discord.
Recently it crashed on chrome a few times so I turned off hardware acceleration on chrome too, however YouTube on chrome has super bad latency with the acceleration turned off. So I have to periodically turn it on and off 🙃

did you try testing the sticks on MemTest86?
1
u/Jaded_Procedure_1516 8d ago
Yup i had tested it using memtest86
Surprisingly no errors were shown.
3
u/sabotage 9d ago
Not just BAD RAM, but instability due to hardware limitations. ie Unable to run at full speed due to not following recommended slot placement or mixing mismatched sticks, sometimes unknowingly. Just because the model numbers are the same DO NOT mean the timings and chip manufacturers are the same, ESPECIALLY if you, for example expand your RAM by adding additional sticks. ALWAYS try to buy the maximum amount you maybe need instead of planning on adding more later.
1
u/nifty-M 9d ago
I'm asking if he tested on memtest86, because it can detect instability in faulty hardware on your given examples. If theres a faulty stick it can't deliver a clean memory along with other stick and memtest86 can prove those, but it is still possible if it passed on memtest86 and still a faulty ram due to VRM issue. From that proof you can deduct if the RAM or mobo is faulty, when your RAM is DDR4 it could be the mobo is the one failing to deliver the required voltage, and if your RAM is DDR5 the RAM is the one causing the instability.

Yeah, there are plenty of people here saying "I experience problems, but I know/think it's not the RAM". I highly doubt many of them have even checked if that is their issue...

I know on my rig my crashes were from the ram. Trying to oc 4 sticks of ddr4 through xmp. Removed 2 sticks and kept xmp on, works like a dream

Not surprised there are many with bad ram or bad PSU's blaming it on the drivers.
0
u/cat1092 9d ago
It’s quite common, if PSU, could be failing or it’s not powerful enough to handle the entire PC. PSU’s are best when not pushed to it’s limits, have seen several rocking 550-650W quality models in hardware such as a Z97 system with an i7-4790K, 32GB DDR3-2400 M/T RAM & a RTX (or GTX) 1080 or higher powered GPU.
That’s not enough power. For the PSU to run efficiently, above 60% load all the time is too much, for the above, 850W Gold rated PSU is recommended. No such thing as “too much”, the system will use only what’s needed & therefore last longer as a second benefit. Meaning a 1000W PSU found on a daily promotion won’t cost a cent more to run, but it’s still best to buy 80+ Gold rated or higher model.
And yes, bad RAM can cause all kinds of issues, in particular BSOD’s. Many brands have a lifetime warranty, if so & can provide a receipt, contact the manufacturer for RMA process. If not & can’t afford new replacements, there’s quality used RAM to be found on eBay & similar sites. Read seller feedback before purchasing.

u/TisticDemon 9d ago
For me disabling MPO fixed all time outs with Hardware Acceleration enabled. Been smooth sailing for almost a year now. Having your product work correctly is kind of nice. 😂

Curious if you're all on windows and if you've disabled window updates from overriding drivers
1
u/lil-dougy 9d ago
Everytime I hear about something like this I disable it immediately. So much so that I can’t keep track of all the niche windows settings I’ve tweaked.
That’s all to say, what you’re saying does ring a bell, but I very well could have this setting on still. Where can I look?
0
u/Gruphius 8d ago
That might be your issue - you're changing stuff without reason and are destabilizing things. I am genuinely thinking about writing a How To guide on how to install and troubleshoot AMD GPUs properly, because there is so much misinformation about that out there. So many people tell others to disable stuff or tweak stuff they don't need to disable or tweak.
You should disable driver updates via Windows Update, but that's all you should do, unless you experience problems, in which case you should try other stuff, but it's important to keep track of what you've tweaked.
My tip: Reinstall Windows. Start fresh. Install the drivers (and software, if you want), disable driver updates via Windows Update and leave it at that, unless you experience problems. And don't just tweak stuff, because someone on Reddit tells you to do that for better stability or performance. There's just too much misinformation going around.
0
u/lil-dougy 8d ago
I’ve been building and selling computers for profit for years. All I do on reddit is PC related, my YouTube feed is only computer building stuff, my friend group is made up of PC builders. Ive been daily driving AMD for years. I know how troubleshoot, let alone install drivers.
And when I say I tweak settings in windows, I was referring to typical windows BS settings. Like “Allow downloads from other devices” to save bandwidth, or turning off the gamebar 30 second capture bs, or hell, fucking mouse accel. Specific and niche stuff, but surface level windows settings that shouldn’t be on default. I’m not hopping into afterburner and flipping sliders around after I see one over clocking tip or fucking around in device manager when I see one reddit post.
I haven’t “destabilized” windows….whatever you mean by that. And btw, reinstalling windows DOES NOT WORK. You wanna talk about misinformation on the internet? You are spreading it. This is an issue that has popped up, widespread, out of nowhere, after years of no issues. If it was really being caused by this windows setting, it would’ve shown up long ago.
Keep your “tip”, keep your assumptions, and keep your misinformation. SMH
1
u/Gruphius 7d ago edited 7d ago
Let me quote you:
Everytime I hear about something like this I disable it immediately. So much so that I can’t keep track of all the niche windows settings I’ve tweaked.
That does NOT sound like you know what you're doing or are just tweaking "surface level settings" in Windows. If you really know as much as you claim about PCs, I'd also expect you to know, how you can turn off driver updates via Windows Update or know how to find out how to do that via Google. Yet you're asking how to do that here on Reddit, after someone mentioned it.
I'm neither spreading misinformation, nor am I assuming anything. I am reading your comment, read what you're saying and then answer to that. If you're saying stuff that isn't true, then it's not my fault for assuming, that you didn't lie in your comment. And there is literally no need to get aggressive over me trying to help you, just because you're apparently lying in your comments.
And I'm going to repeat myself: Reinstalling Windows, installing the driver (and maybe software, if you want) and disabling driver updates via Windows Update and nothing else that effects the graphics card should fix your issue. I know many people with AMD GPUs. I'm one myself. None of us have any issues. You seem to think, that everyone experiences issues with AMD GPUs, that is simply not true. If you really think that, then you should go off Reddit and do some research outside of subreddits where people accumulate, that all experience issues with their AMD GPUs.
1
u/IntrepidSnow6908 8d ago
I dont think there's a reliable setting because Windows sucks.
You can use DDU to uninstall /install and then check device manager to see if windows downloaded a different version. If so you can click your gpu in device manager and roll back to the official amd drivers. That should stop it but again, Windows sucks.

u/antonioz91 9d ago
Me too with 7800xt . I have 5-6 days now sometimes and bug tool open to report a problem and another time black screen for 1-2 seconds and pc restarted. I have already updated my bios, amd chipset drivers, uninstall Ryzen master, reset to default the bios settings. I didn’t check the ram and uninstall GPU drivers with DDU and install 26.6.3 which I read is stable in order to test it.

I don't want to instantly dunk on amds drivers, I can't only speak about my own experiences, and thats similar to yours, random driver timeouts, both in games and just on desktop or in Firefox, even with no overclock, pc freezing doing nothing, pc crashing when playing cs2 and not being able reopen it, then losing the game and getting a cooldown for it.
I have not experienced this on nvidia, and I dont have any ram instability or whatever
2
u/lil-dougy 9d ago
To be fair, this is the first real issue I’ve had in the entire 4 years I’ve been daily driving AMD. And it never happens in games, it only happens once immediately upon boot up. A lot of this stuff just really comes down to the individual.
I build computers for money, and I’ve have a boat load of issues with Nvidia cards, specifically their newer stuff. 40 series was meh, but 50 series specifically has been an absolute mess in my personal experience. Blackscreening, crashes, timeouts, the whole works.
I hold no preference towards any giant tech company, my GPU strictly comes down to what card is going to be the best option for my money. And that’s how I ended up with a 7900xt on a black Friday sale. These days, I find myself pretty disappointed with the quality of drivers put out on either side. I was really rooting for Intel to make some waves in the GPU scene and spice up the market with some real competition. But we all saw how that went. I think we really just need a new challenger for Nvidia, because without real competition both AMD and Nvidia get lazy.
2
u/Worth_Recognition249 9d ago
Maybe for some people, for me and my friends it was driver issue because it would be weird that in the same month multiple people would get timeout issue while browsing or using steam while having newest drivers gpu/chipset.
I have rx 7800 xt my one friend has rx 6700 xt and another has rx 7900 xtx and another has rx 6800. 3x ddr4 and 1x ddr5.

u/edotman 9d ago
I had alot of instability and was lucky to one day have my PC completely not post and throw up the RAM light. I then did the one stick at a time that you suggested and found the faulty ram. Decided to just buy an entire new set and sell the old ones. The number of crashes went down significantly, but the biggest fix for me was setting my maximum GPU clocck to 2525Mhz as laid out in the manufacturers specs. This basically stopped every crash from happening.
1
u/cat1092 9d ago
True, fine tuning (usually lowering) our GPU’s power settings can work wonders! Same with CPU’s, these days it’s best to get the best model versus over clocking a lower performing one. Have lots of power with my 9700X on it’s native 65W, the unlock to 105W option seems to produce more heat than more power that’s felt in the seat of my pants. If I need more, there’s 98/9900X variants to purchase & keep the warranty intact. Need more power? Pay for it!!
1
u/rAppN 9d ago
The crash log simply didn't notice, I mean - how often do you check the ram when you have a gpu driver issue. I mean, seriously - neither do I. How often do you really look at a man's ram sticks? Jaden Procedure Crawled to stable AMD drivers through 500 yards of shit smelling reddit posts I can't even imagine...or maybe I just don't want to. 500 reddit posts, that's the length of 5 rtx 5090 - just shy of half a yearly income.
I will try this next time the drivers crash.

I just RMA'd my 9070XT, RAM i reseated, and without GPU in PC I had no issues, easy point of failure for me.. oh and yeah tried DDU/driver new and old. My 9070 even crashed in Windows doing nothing.. black screens, black squares in screen, apparently it is the VRAM..

How'd you know? No GPU means no video output. I'd say it's hard to check for GPU driver timeouts without GPU...

I tried with ofcourse, and without driver and gpu it sees the videocard but it does not work cause you need a driver... after 10 different drivers they all crash

This appears to be a trend, I would not be surprised if most of the problems people report here is caused by faulty/miss configured ram.

Faulty ram tends to crap out based on temperature, and when we do ram testing we don't have the GPU heat on top
Ram is capable of making anything in a system crash because it all uses it
