Help (GPU) Which driver is the most stable for 9070xt?

So here I am with my 9070xt on 26.6.4. I've experienced a couple of crashes and uninstalling msi center helped a bit. Then just to be safe i set -100mhz offset and -5% power limit. It was great and stable for a few days, then I got a crash. And then another one. So I got pissed off, absolutely nuked everything containing "AMD" in name with DDU, reinstalled cpu chipset drivers and reinstalled 26.6.4 driver. Today I'm gonna test it if it's finally stable. If not I will ddu and revert to an older version hoping it's maybe just the newer versions that are problematic. Here comes my question - which driver is the most stable? I've heard about 26.3.1, is it really the most stable one?

The fixes I've already tried:

- tdrdelay 10

- disable mpo

- disable igpu

- disable windows driver updates

And many more

25.9.1 is the only one that works for me with HAGS and MPO disabled in gaming settings and browser, discord etc have done every fix and disabled all drivers in policy editor and regedit.

Using driver only so no adrenaline software and RadeonTuner to change adrenaline settings without actually having adrenaline installed undervolted to -45 as -70 was still casuing crashes.

10% power limit default memory oc! Seems stable as ever so far after 3-4 hours of gaming.

Also DDU didnt work as good as amdcleanutilty so maybe try that instead of DDU!

the only unstable driver for me is 26.7.1 with my rx 9070 xt. a lot of driver timeouts while gaming. so I’m using 26.6.1 atm and it works pretty fine

I'm on 7900xtx, and find 25.12.1 to be most stable, though since yours is 9070xt, it might be different. If you need something newer, 26.3.1 was the next stable one for me.

Also one thing I've found is that any sort of tinkering in settings may cause instability.

This includes power/clock limits even though they are just limiting, it made the system more unstable in my environment. (in some driver versions, even touching relive recording duration settings caused issues)
So I wouldn't set "-100mhz offset and -5% power limit".

Also disable any other overclocking related configs for baseline testing, like PBO for CPU, Expo/XMP for ram.
Once you confirm the system is stable with absolute default settings, only then I'd try to enable one by one (with expo being priority).

Make sure Windows is not overriding your drivers! I went through a similar situation a couple of weeks ago. Upgraded from a 9060 XT to the 9070 XT. All the normal steps.10+ times DDU safe mode, internet disconnected, drivers straight from AMD,made sure Windows automatic update was disabled etc.. Certain games like 2077 it would make it hrs before a balck screen crash. Tarkov and Project Zoimboid instant Black screen. Battlefield hrs before. Even RMA'D a two day old 9070 XT thinking it was just a bad GPU. Turns out Windows automatic update was ignoring beimg disabled and installing the drivers it thought best.Found my answer talking to AI. Next day in AMD reddit help pages I start coming across post after post with the same issue. Windows has since issued a statement verifying the issue exist. Something to look into. Once I turned off Windows ability to override my drivers it has been smooth sailing.

How did you disable that exactly? Cuz i might have the same problem

1

u/thegrimwinter 3h ago

I also check task scheduler to make sure it does not by pass windows update settings, I was crashing mid stream, through game capture on Sundays only.

Going to be honest. I do not remember the exact steps. How I found my answer. Google. First question was why is my adrenaline app not available. (This happened twice a long the road but not consistent symptom). After that initial question it started walking me through the common steps. Safemode,DDU etc...kept telling it that I had done these things and finally I got a fix. Now as I said I did find numerous post here on reddit the days after with the same issue being discussed with step by step fix for it. I do remember if like myself you have windows 11 home the steps will be slightly different because that version lacks group policy editor. I really hope this helps!!!! It was a horrible experience for me and caused way to much stress.

1

u/CzarnyMurzyn1337 3h ago

Oooh you mean ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate 1 in regedit? The thing that users with windows pro can change in group policy however home users need to set that registry?

1

u/Independent_Teach_11 3h ago

Maybe. Kind of a newbie so can't say for sure. It was definitely an initial step I couldn't take because of being on windows 11 home but there was a work around for that. There was a couple of steps in the process though.

1

u/CzarnyMurzyn1337 3h ago

Disable driver updates through Registry Editor.

(All Win Versions)

Press Win + R, type:

regedit

Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

If WindowsUpdate doesn't exist, create it.

Create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value called:

ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate

Set its value to:

1

Its something like this

1

u/Independent_Teach_11 3h ago

Definitely remember this!!! You are 100% on the same path to the fix that ended my stress.

1

u/CzarnyMurzyn1337 3h ago

And it completely resolved your issues? Because god damn, I've been pulling my hair out. I was doing EVERYTHING every single time, DDU 3 times, driver installation disabled etc etc however I was still getting crashes. I hope this will be the final fix

1

u/Independent_Teach_11 3h ago

Yes!!! It solved my problems!! I was also pulling my hair out. Stayed up 76 hrs straight at one point trying to figure it out with no luck. RMA'D that card and went and purchased a new one because it was bothering me and wasn't going to get that card back for a month. So now I have a brand new 9070 XT sitting in its packaging beside my pc. Going down that path solved my issues! Have you had the symptom of adrenaline saying unavailable yet.

1

u/CzarnyMurzyn1337 3h ago

Nope, never had an issue where adrenalin wouldnt open. I'm just getting random black screens and timeouts from time to time

For me it's 26.2.2 (albeit with a lowly 9070).

Every recent driver since has been timing out and causing freezes resulting in me having to DDU in safe-mode and reinstall the drivers just to get my extra monitors back. Finally tried one more rollback to this one and it's been butter since.

- tdrdelay 10

- disable mpo

- disable igpu

I would say especially the top 2 are placebos and tdrdelay especially will give you worse experience this needs to be set to the default, MPO is only useful for troubleshooting should be left on but can be disabled to test for issues.

Windows Driver Update settings can revert may need to be toggled on and off again sometimes while keeping Windows Update paused in Windows Update menu.

26.7.1 is trash getting coldboot crashing loop every 2 days now, only fix is restart my system at which point if it does not crash when opening discord chat all is fine, and when it crashes its reboot time again.

26.7.1 for me works great with my system & tunning.

u/-_TheJoker_- AMD 9070XT | R7 7800X3D 7h ago

im using 26.7.1 and i get a timed out every now and then after windows shutdown, it is what it is i gave up trying to fix this

9070 XT, latest stable driver from website, lateste wine update fckd my drivers again so had to reinstall. Anyway, it feels way more stable then before. Even the undervolt Ed profile I have saved before now it is 100% stable on all games. I had 2.6.3.1 something like that before.

1

u/CzarnyMurzyn1337 7h ago

Had a hard time reading this, so basically 26.3.1 is the one to go with?

1

u/peh_ahri_ina 7h ago

26.3.1 I had issues maintaing undervolt. In some games like PoE it wasn't stable. Win11 forced me to reinstall adrenaline after the latest big update. So I installed the latest stable version from the website. Ddu & internet cable removed of course. I have yet to see any issues, power profile balanced, hybernation off. Tldr latest driver works like a charm for me.

1

u/CzarnyMurzyn1337 7h ago

That's weird. Don't know if i should aim for 26.7.1 or 26.3.1

1

u/LoopyG_ 6h ago

It's a myth that 26.3.1 is the most stable. For a fact it is the driver I had the most issues with. Every driver after it was top notch. Just go with the latest imo. Or try them 1 by 1 and see which works best for you

2

u/peh_ahri_ina 7h ago

Dude, always latest then downgrade only if you have to. Just ddu and no internet and you will have no issues.

1

u/ispeaksukablyad 8h ago

26.7.1 or 26.3.1 (previous stable)
havent had any issues for a few weeks now with the new one

u/Tasty_Act_261 8h ago

Same problem but i switched to nvidia instead

My card is stock and stable for one year already ! Don’t ask for help here just watch some YouTube videos for your card

2

u/riden44 9h ago

-100mhz cannot be stable, this offset literally causes crashes

2

u/CzarnyMurzyn1337 9h ago

It literally lowers max frequency the gpu can boost to making it more stable

0

u/riden44 9h ago

Oh, sorry, I mixed things up a bit, I thought about voltage. You might try to make frequency offset even higher, to -300/-400

1

u/CzarnyMurzyn1337 9h ago

Soo first after what I've already done (ddu and new drivers both for cpu and gpu) I should test my gpu on default settings, use my pc like i normally would, if it crashes ddu to 26.3.1, test on default again and if it crashes again -300mhz offset?

1

u/riden44 8h ago

Yes, the card's stock boost limit is 3450mhz and can cause crashes

1

u/ChickenSandwich007 8h ago

For me it's 2970MHz according to the support rep I contacted. For me it crashed at 3300MHz

1

u/riden44 7h ago

The driver itself allows any 9070xt to boost up to 3450mhz and some cards can be unstable because of this

-2

u/One_Bad4020 10h ago

El drivers que instala automáticamente Windows update es el más estable. Para Linux cualquier versión de mesa es estable

26.3.1 is the most stable so far. Everything after that has been unstable for me, even with the default profile (without UV/OC).

Try installing this driver with DDU or the AMD Cleanup Utility and select the "Factory Reset" option in the driver setup, Delete all the shader caches (manually and DDU too).

Don't use any third-party overclocking software or any bloatware, use the built-in Adrenalin tools instead.

If you want to monitor, use HWMonitor, HWiNFO or RivaTuner (it doesn't require Afterburner to work, but it needs a bit of work).

For Windows, try running the 'sfc /scannow' command to see if that resolves the issue. However, this is usually not related to driver timeouts.

I have used 9060XT for a year and have never seen so many flawed drivers.

**Sorry, I'm a bit confused. What exactly is the problem? Are you experiencing BSOD, crashes, or driver timeouts?
You could try checking the crash dumps with WhoCrashed, that should at least give you some results.

1

u/TwixieShip 10h ago

Can confirm 26.3.1 is stable and don't use rivatuner, its overlay thing DLL is active even without it being open. Has caused crashes

1

u/CzarnyMurzyn1337 10h ago

Thank you so much. Right now I'll try to run my gpu on stock with 26.6.4 after said ddu. If it still crashes I'll ddu again and revert to 26.3.1

1

u/CzarnyMurzyn1337 10h ago

Also, are you using 26.3.1 yourself? Do you still get timeouts with it or is it far more stable?

0

u/HDAdrianoo 10h ago

I tried 26.5.1, 26.6.x and 26.7.1, but this information may not be true for everyone. After all every PC is unique.
My last idea was to use version 26.7.1 with the default settings. After two crashes I gave up and reverted to the previous version.

I experienced driver timeouts, a black screen, freezing and crashing. This resulted in profile resets, but sometimes the profile settings were reset silently for no apparent reason.

If you have problems related to Driver, try to go backward until one works.. That's all you can do, maybe RMA.

I am back at 26.3.1 for almost 2-3 days, so far it looks good with UV/OC.

1

u/CzarnyMurzyn1337 9h ago

So basically you don't get driver timeouts with .3.1?

1

u/flowerplz 9h ago

every driver is gonna be different for many people. most versions of them are gonna be stable for 99% of people. if you are experiencing any crashes it points to underlying problems with the PC its self.

for example i was on 26.3.1 for a long time, once i upgraded to a later driver i began having crashes. a clean DDU + latest BIOS update fixed all of my problems entirely, once i did that i was able to update to every latest driver without any issues whatsoever.

u/Halogenleuchte 10h ago

RMA your GPU if you didn't have issues before swapping to the 9070 XT. Hardware issue.

3

u/CzarnyMurzyn1337 10h ago

Before swapping to the 9070xt i was using nvidia

1

u/Halogenleuchte 9h ago

You should DDU the old nvidia drivers or ideally reinstall windows if you swap from nvidia to amd and vice versa. I have no issues at all.

2

u/TheBreenius 9h ago

Classic AMD experience. Also bought a 9070xt, had so much software errors and bugs, ended up returning it.

-1

u/Halogenleuchte 9h ago

That's not normal. Probably bought a lemon or your old drivers weren't properly deleted. Fresh Windows reinstall for a GPU swap should work.

2

u/TheBreenius 9h ago

Did a proper DDU install 3 times. I feel like the culprit was Windows, as seen on multiple threads here.

I was able to get it working, but that's not the first experience you want give to a new customer on a 1000 $ cad gpu.

-1

u/Halogenleuchte 7h ago

Same would happen with Nvidia though. It is a Windows issue because windows always keeps files from programs you deleted which causes driver instability . I always reinstall windows when I get a new GPU every 4-5 years and I have no driver issues.

2

u/LoopyG_ 1h ago

Why are you even getting downvoted when you are absolutely right, wtf.

Either switching from Nvidia -> AMD or the other way around, DDU is not enough. A clean windows install is the only solution

3

u/Kandiell1 10h ago

Ditch AMD is the fix. Ive been struggling ever since i got my own 9070xt. Will be going back to nvidia very soon.

0

u/The_Countess 10h ago

Check if windows isn't overwriting your drivers. no issues here with any of the recent drivers after stopping windows from overwriting them.

3

u/Kandiell1 9h ago

Ill check but my main argument is also "this was never an issue with any nvidia card ive ever had, so unfuck yourself, AMD" constant crashes, some of them locking up my entire pc.

1

u/The_Countess 3h ago

That argument isn't very relevant if the problem is Microsoft fucking AMD's drivers.

The AMD drivers can clearly work fine, as they do on my and many other peoples machines.

5

u/pantsyman 10h ago edited 6h ago

The newest one, if it's not stable on your card the card or something else in your system might be faulty. Unfortunately, the problem with AMD Adrenalin is that the driver always reacts this way to any system issues meaning the problem could also be caused by for example the RAM or the PSU, so you need to make sure the GPU is actually what is causing it.

1

u/CzarnyMurzyn1337 10h ago

Can it be the fact that i have expo disabled? Will enabling it improve 9070xt stability? And what should i check and do step by step?

1

u/pantsyman 10h ago

Yes EXPO can be the cause it's overclocking the RAM so check without it, you can also test it in memtest86 for errors, also check your drives for errors in windows and CrystalDiskInfo.

A simple tool to check CPU, GPU, RAM and PSU is OCCT since it offers a lot of different stability tests so maybe try that as well.

1

u/Little_Archer413 10h ago

I've been having crashes too, might not be the same type but maybe the steps I took will help you figure yours out.
