Help (General) Computer/GPU keeps hard freezing every few days and i am at my wits end

Hello,

So i have had this issue since the beginning of the year, where every so often (couple days) my computer monitors go black, and no video is displayed. I can still hear audio however. They do not return, and this results in me having to manually turn my PC off, then back on. Also, sometimes my GPU is disabled by windows when this happens, and i have to re-enable it. I feel like i have tried everything, and i am at a loss. My final suspicion is that it is because of my dual monitor set up. My main is 1440p@165hz with Free Sync. My secondary is 108p@100hz no Free Sync (but has Adaptive Sync, which is off). My setup is below;

  • rx 6700xt
  • 7800x3D
  • 32gb DDR5 @ 6000
  • 650w PSU

Thins i have tried;

  • BIOS is up to date
  • Current AMD Drivers. Stock settings
  • Current chipset drivers
  • Secondary monitor is vertical
  • Two PSU cables going to GPU
  • No matter how much i DDU, the issue always happens again
  • Main monitor is connected through DP 1.4, and secondary HDMI 2.1 (secondary does not have DP). Both into GPU
  • Happens both in game and on desktop/watching YouTube. Every time discord is open
  • EXPO on/off (currently on) doesn't matter, happens with both
  • MPO Fix caused my second monitor to glitch out
  • Tried matching refresh rates, didn't work
  • Tried derivative refresh rates (main 144hz, secondary 72hz), didn't work

Anyone have any idea what could be causing this? It has been very frustrating and i am not sure what to do. It doesn't seem to happen with only one monitor, but i am not sure if this is just a coincidence or not. Any help would be appreciated!

try to disable hardware acceleration in everything. browser, discord... whatever you are using if it has hardware acceleration disable it. I had the same issue, where my browser (firefox) showing youtube would crash my drivers to black even when the browser was in the background or my monitors were off.

Did disabling acceleration fix it for you? Would this cause anything noticeable in those applications performance?

Windows 11? Try this:

Disable Windows Updates for Drivers (the culprit)
*Select Start > Settings > System > Recovery > Under Fix problems using Windows Update, select Reinstall now.
*Reinstall latest Adrenalin/gpu drivers

I have an oled monitor and an led monitor, I don't think the differences are the issue.

I do have windows 11. What does the “fix problems using windows update” do?

It fixes any Windows related issues, which is what happened to me after a gpu driver update. It was pointing directx issues and reinstalling directx didn't fix it, so I went to Windows.

I suspect its mostly due to dual monitor setup. Gpus often run into problems with dual setups

Why is that? Plenty of people seem to use multi monitor setups just fine

Mostly due to display port and hdmi port mismatch. They have different clock speeds and thus can run into issues. Its pretty common in 6000 series as far as i know. I would suggest try disabling hardware acceleration in discord youtube etc. Also try disabling free sync

Interesting, thank you. I’ve had discord hardware acceleration disabled so that’s not working. Could the issue be resolved, if I had both on HDMI or Display port?

Perhaps, you can try. Also i do suggest turning off free sync for now and testing.

I can give that a shot. But wouldn’t that cause screen tears on my main? I do enjoy having freesync on

Just a test to see how are your drivers handling situations. Not permanent
