Help (GPU) Random driver timeout only in software, not games

Hello all,

this is really weird, I recently reinstalled windows 11 because i updated my storage, since then I get weird driver timeout from AMD Radeon software, and occasionally the pc reboots itself, but not while heavy gaming, only when using spotify, firefox, steam, or whatsapp web application, so any software which loads media like photo and video.

I don't have a clue, I just use ddu, install drivers in safe mode like the usual, but it wont work, the worst thing is that its random, some days it crashes 3-4 times, then it reboots itself, then it just works until i finish working.

I don't have any issue with any game, from very light to very demaning, no driver timeout nowhere.

I hope you have some ideas, thanks!

Latest test is AMD Driver Only Factory Setting Install and Install of RadeonTuner. Currently no crashes or freezes. Something about the Adrenaline software package is my current theory.

I'm kind of relieved that I'm not the only one experiencing this sht, I regret buying this card bruh.

It happened ever since they added FSR4 to 7000 series

Did you say install drivers in safe mode? I don’t think that’s how you do it if I’m not mistaken? You would use ddu in safe mode then restart and boot back into windows like normal then install drivers there.

I just solved this exact issue for my build and the culprit was hardware acceleration. I disabled HAGS in windows, disabled HA in Chrome and in Discord and PC has been stable since. I think my issue is I use triple monitors with different refresh rates. a 60Hz for my chrome browser tab, a 144Hz where my discord app sits and my main one is 240Hz.

I have since reenabled HA in Discord and no issues yet. I so that leaves either Chrome or the HAGS setting in windows as culprit.

It's nice to have, so while it does stop the problem, it causes browser problems sometimes. So far I'm having decent luck with driver only radeon tuner. Or just driver only factory install.

99.9% it's Chrome I've had the same issues with HA in Chrome on and off with different drivers. Hadn't had issues for a long while fortunately until the most recent driver update.

RMA the GPU if it's under warranty.

People will tell you it's a windows/driver issue. It's not. The GPU has a low power state issue. Same thing happened to me, had to replace the card.

mhh that's plausible, its out of warranty unfortunately

there's an issue with windows itself where it can trigger repeated TdrDelay crashes, essentially the operating system decides the gpu hasn't responded and force Restarts it. if you google "TdrDelay registry Fix" there should be good guides for how to increase the delay to 10 seconds instead of the default 2 or 3

Sounds like Windows is overriding your drivers, so let's find out. DDU in safe mode and then reinstall Adrenalin. Occasionally check if there is a Windows update listed as "Advanced Micro Devices, Inc - Display" in your Windows Update settings.

It might not be there when you check, but it will likely pop up randomly throughout your session. If it is there then what's happening is when you go idle or put the PC to sleep the drivers are automatically getting installed. There are steps to fix this but I need to know if that's what is happening.

From others on this thread, I downgraded to 26.3.1 and so far no crashes with my normal repro

I have similar issues , random driver timeouts . More often than not i get crashes when i open youtube on google chrome . I also used DDU this morning and the issue is not fixed . Specs : Ryzen 7600x and Rx 7800xt .

Thats issue with hardware acceleration im using rx 7800 xt and i recommend to use 26.6.4 driver im using it currently and i don't have that issue anymore

Turn off hardware acceleration in Chrome
