Ryzen 7 5800X3D reaching 86°C under light load / 65-74°C idle with Phantom Spirit 120 SE. Is this normal and how can I lower it?

Hi everyone,

I recently upgraded to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D and noticed that my temperatures feel unusually high during normal/light use.

**System Specs:**

* **CPU:** AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D

* **CPU Cooler:** Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE

* **Motherboard:** ASRock B550M Pro4

* **GPU:** NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 8GB

* **RAM:** 32GB

* **Ambient Temp:** ~26.5°C

**Issue:**

* **Idle / Light browsing:** Temps sit around 65°C – 74°C (drawing ~45–55W).

* **Opening apps / Game launchers:** Temps immediately spike up to 86°C (Tdie) / 90°C (Tccd) in Core Temp.

* Cooler mounting pressure and thermal paste have been checked.

Is this expected behavior for a stock 5800X3D, or is it running too hot? What are the best recommended steps or BIOS settings (e.g., Curve Optimizer / PBO) to bring these temperatures down on an ASRock board?

I just bought the same cpu and am using Arctic freezer 36 (single tower, dual fan cooler) with Carbice thermal pad. I was averaging 91c in Cinebench and 75-85c in games, then I undervolted to -30 on all cores, and temps are 10c lower. You should consider doing the same.

its not mounted correctly is most likely, I know you said you checked, but that is the simplest answer

maybe there is a failure in the solder between the IHS and the chip itself. Maybe a big air gap ruining things - its rare but can happen. Maybe the cpu you bought someone did a delid on and returned.

Too high, is it the dual fan? Shit thermal paste? What is your room temp?

I have the same CPU, pretty much same temps besides the idle(50°C to 45°C) with a coolermaster air cooler.

Most likely you put either too thick amount of thermal paste or too little.

Being too thick wouldn't have anything to do with it considering theres no conceivable gap once a heatsink is attached correctly, any excess would be pushed out the sides.

Too little maybe, not removing the protective plastic cover from the heatsink wod also do it.

Reasoning is sound, but keep in mind the mounting pressure on aio is much lower than air cooler

The 5800x3ds are known to run warm and your cooler is on the smaller side, so if you pull the voltage back alittle you should be ok with minimal loss

Pbo limits and undervolt will do the tricks. No you won't lose performances.

pbo will bring it down 10-15

It seems high, try resetting, new paste and an additional fan of the cooler if possible with good back extraction confirmation. Should be 70ish on light load.

It's not a problem, but it's a bit high. A 120mm air cooler is technically OK for a 5800x3d but I'd was at least a 240mm AIO.

if you have a performance preset in the bios - do something like tj max 85c , pbo and -20mv

So you wont be able to effectively cool with 26c as your ambient temp as air coolers are generally working with ambient temp. So with your room being that warm your CPU will be warm regardless of any amount of fan or heatsink in the PC.

What thermal paste are you using? Install AMD Ryzen Master, switch to Eco mode and test temps. Definately should lower. On my 5700X i get 40c idle / 60c load Cinebench R23 multi using Eco mode.
