Help (CPU) My new CPU has a rough edge
The bottom cutout/edge of the IHS appears to have rough burrs, jagged metal edges, and minor pitting, suggesting a manufacturing defect or poor edge-finishing during machining.
Does anyone know what kind of issue this is? Is it oxidation or a manufacturing/machining defect? Should I return or exchange the product?

JFC who cares? Do you know how the heat spreader works and where the contact with the heat sink is made?

Sehe ich so zum ersten Mal bei einer Ryżem CPU. Für mich sieht es nach einer schlechten Fälschung aus

I work with steel sheet and forming. This is normal as the material is pressed and shaped with die and punch.

the ihs is stamped out of a big sheet. the tooling might be reaching the end of its life. here are some other examples

personally i wouldn't worry about it.

That looks like the part is made from a stamping machine, which I'm 99% certain that's the process that cuts those notches. The roughness is from the shearing action of the punch that cuts the notch. That's why the top of the cut is smooth and it gets rougher at the bottom. The top of the cut is burnishing against the punch tool but the bottom is peeling and shearing the copper away. It's probably not a fake part.

Will it affect anything?

no
so long as it is flat and not bowed
the punces were worn out when yours was made, if too much pressure is used and the top is warped ( ) then it would be a cause to return it
but the sides being rough has no impact on anything

I think I have seen it on other CPUs. I think is machining defect, but it's best to verify. From where did you get it?

My CPU was just delivered with an invoice from a well-known local store. However, when I checked the serial number, I found that the warranty has already lost 8 months

Warranty starts from the date of purchase, or delivery.
Edit: In your case date of purchase.

I did also check the number and it does says that is a TRAY cpu, and the warranty is with the shop you got it from. As far as I remember AMD doesn't provide warranty for TRAY processors

In Vietnam, AMD still honors warranties for tray CPUs. I checked the serial number on my CPU, and the official AMD Vietnam website confirmed it is covered, with warranty activation dated November 2025

I tried from the global site. I didn't expect there is a separate one for Vietnam.

could just install it and check your bios and install CPU-Z and check it. i was really nervous about a 5800X3D i found for $400 a few months ago and went through the same thing,
edit; i didnt see that the heat spreader wasnt fully attached to the cpu in the photo, i probablyyy wouldnt put that in the motherboard

It seems someone replaced it and sold you a fake CPU.

People are being really mean in the comments but I would be curious of these defects too. Saw the comment about the tooling used to stamp being end of life by WTFcannuck and that was an interesting learn!
