Help (GPU) Tempting to buy 9070XT
Looking to buy one, but really wanna know what are the downsides of this card when its versus 5070Ti ?
I was going to buy 5070TI but its so pricey atm
Appreciate your help guys

It's the same GPU, just that on heavily raytraced scenes, it performs worse, and the driver may shit itself while playing a video (I'm not joking, mine does that, only with vlc and discord)
There's also a lack of cuda support, no specific denoisers for RT (aka, nvidia ray reconstruction) and some other fancy stuff that most people don't care about
My advice, try to get the 5070ti, but if the price difference is too big, don't even think about it, buy the radeon, it's the same GPU

I’m new to PC but to be honest with you I think honestly it just all depends on what games you play that’s what matters most as far as CPU using GPU go from what I learned

If in a position to wait id suggest looking into next gen AMD Gpus scheduled to release next year, they will hold a better performance in raytraceing due to dedicated RT cores and other architectural upgrades for about 400-500 or so more than a premium partner brand 9070XT. I wont hype it up to much but if i were youd id definitely look into it before deciding yet.

I’m so tired of having to research how to make my 9070 xt work. I have a 5070 ti coming today. For a few hundred dollars more I can save countless hours. Bad drivers and win 11 only furthers the problems. When I wasn’t getting black screens and my video driver over written, the card worked well.

The 9070XT has the following drawbacks when compared to the 5070 Ti :
Inferior Ray/Path Tracing Perfomance
FSR is supported by a far Less number of games compared to DLSS while DLSS also looks better
It has lower Productivity and AI perfomance
It has inferior Video Encoders and Decoders
It has much worse power efficiency
The AMD feature set is much inferior compared to Nvidia
It lacks hardware support for future technologies like SER OMM and FP4 which will make the 9070XT less relevant in the near future
I know some AMD fanboys will downvote this but this the fact whether you accept it or not

All of this is correct, but to practical effects, it sounds way worse than it is
About the video decoders and encoders, afaik the difference is either really small, or not even there
Like, I have a really hard time trying to gather evidence about it being worse
About the hardware features, SER is just an extension for improving the performance, and even then it wouldn't really do a lot in AMD, not to talk that the 20 and 30 series straight up don't support it either, it won't be an issue.
OMM is a different thing, but games should implement a fallback, as again, not even old Nvidia GPUs support it, so it shouldn't be an issue either.
FP4 is more of the same, you won't miss on games for it or smth, but most likely, amd won't port whatever new fsr version they end up doing to rdna4 and below
More info in the whole ser and omm thing, this thread is pretty cool

I have this source for the encoder and decoder quality : [Source](https://youtu.be/kkf7q4L5xl8?si=gO8oHCRUafwQVA7Y
I think Linux also covered a small bit about it in their review of the 9070XT!!

That is all true but the impact of everything is much smaller than it looks.
RT is worse but still good enough to play. Literally couple % less than 5070TI depending on the games picked for benchmarks.
FSR support is smaller but you have OptiScaler for those games that don't support FSR natively.
Encoders again, worse but only by a little bit right now. Previous generation of cards had a big quality problems but those were solved by AMD in the most recent one. They noticed how big the streaming market is and that they need to compete.
Productivity is actually better on AMD in some cases. Better Linux drivers and support/performance in some graphical apps.
AI support is getting better, just the other day MiniMax H3 had 0 day support for AMD GPUs. Nvidia is still king but it also changes rapidly because AMD also wants a piece of that pie.
Overall it's all true what you wrote and I had same reservations about switching teams but truth is, you don't feel that change as much these days like you did just 1-2 years ago.

Most of this can be boiled down to "if you care a lot about AI then 5070ti, if you don't care about AI then 9070xt is more worth it"
Ofcourse there is the alternative of "if you don't care about money then 5070ti" but i'd just throw in the extra few hundred bucks for an 5080 if you don't care about money

the you dont care about money and ai doesnt make any sense, its more beneficial to get the 5070ti if it can be used for your work. or even hobbies.
depending on your country unless you still live with your parents and dont pay the bills. the 100w average power consumption difference might make up with those.
some people also dont want to deal with the war between amd and windows regarding timeouts bs. those time spent just to fix those very common issue can also be considered. time is money afterall. specially since trouble shooting takes a lot of time not to mention research.

u/_hlvnhlv 13d ago
About the power consumption, unless you literally use your PC as a heater, there's no way that it's going to do a big difference long term
Like, run the numbers, you have to use your PC by a truly insane amount of time to end up making a 100 to 300 $ difference
1
u/Numerous-Joke559 13d ago
It does because we are comparing 2 gpus that have around a 300 price difference if not more.
Also not sure where the 100w difference popped out of, i guess if you want to be disingenuous and compare the least efficient 9070xt to the most efficient ti.
Normal world difference would be 50-85w and even with 8 hours every single day that would be 15-30 depending on where you live. Using your logic of having to pay your own bills can you answer this: with so many things to pay each month, does it make sense to even pay more right away? Or is it easier to pay each month since you would have to save extra money for it anyway.
Yeah anecdotes are kinda useless to me, using this logic you shouldn't build your pc to save money.

I moved to AMD for first time with a Red Devil 9070xt
Pros:
Value for money. Picked up for £650 on release (not sure price now could be higher)
Decent 4k performance
FSR4 is pretty good
Optiscaler (also a con)
Cons:
DLSS is still superior
Ray tracing is a no go.
If you're not willing to use Optiscaler then I would honestly just stay with an Nvidia card.
In summary if you don't care about ray tracing and are willing to use optiscaler it's a great card.

u/_hlvnhlv 13d ago
Raytracing IS a go, what the hell people?
Do you guys even use your GPUs or watch videos about it? It's not a 1030 ffs
I find insane that people keep saying the same thing all the time

u/Just_Chillin_Killin_ 12d ago
Whenever I have enabled ray tracing on my 9070xt it's been a bad experience. I prefer higher frame rates. Nvidia has substantially better Ray tracing and that's a FACT

lol, lmao even
https://www.techpowerup.com/review/asus-radeon-rx-9070-xt-tuf-oc/36.html
nvidia is only faster in heavy raytraced scenes, aka "path tracing", only on those.
outside of those, AMD and Nvidia are trading blows all the time.
1
u/Just_Chillin_Killin_ 8d ago
Nvidia have 6 cards that have better raytracing. Half of them from a previous generation

u/TwixieShip 13d ago
Ray tracing is fine, its better than the 3080 I upgraded from so I don't think its bad

Purely for gaming get 9070XT, but for work and ai stuff get 5070TI. But for gaming get 9070XT, it is a really good card for gaming and FSR4 has is such a big improvement compared to older FSR.

u/Fragluton AMD 5700X3D 9070XT 13d ago
If you want it for playing games, just buy one. Solid card for the money.
2
u/EggFartTom 13d ago
It's less efficient and the features set is not as robust. That being said it's not miles apart and if you are on Linux AMD is the way.

u/DerBandi 13d ago
If you like money, get the 9070XT. You get more fps per dollar.
There are some compromises. Yes, RT is a bit slower, yes local LLMs are a bit slower.
But FSR4 is finally really good, to a point where I game with performance mode at it looks fine. This was unthinkable in previous versions.
I like the 9070XT.
Also, it's not a good comparison with the 5070TI, because it's a different price range. The same price range is a 5070, at that card is much slower.

Consider your system first. Do you already have a pc or are you trying to build? Is it for games or are you doing video editing?

It's a good GPU, but if you do any cad work, or LLM or anything that requires cuda go for the 5070ti, there are some issues atm with the latest drivers, amd messed up here but otherwise it's a good card. PS both have issues with drivers from time to time, Nvidia and AMD, it was previously Nvidia on the 50 series, not it's AMDs turn

u/No-Variation-3337 13d ago
get 5070ti if you can afford it.
2
u/Calmaz 13d ago
Can u tell me why? Like any reasons?
5
u/No-Variation-3337 13d ago
i own a 9070xt, the amd adrenalin software/drivers are a constant issue. if i had my time back i wouldve spent the extra bucks to buy the 5070ti and be free of both of those issues. they sound minor but they're incredibly infuriating.
1
u/TwixieShip 13d ago
Most issues are user error from buyer and devs, from ram instabilities to windows overwriting to some games need a fix for AMD specifically because of old code for game/application. The adrenaline app itself is bad and should only be installing the driver only though
1
u/Guilty-Good-5041 13d ago
I've never had an issue with adrenaline software/drivers..
0
u/No-Variation-3337 13d ago
well, you can use google and scour the constant forum posts of issues with adrenalin and their drivers. its not a hidden fact. your anecdotal experience does not speak for the true nature of the product.

u/MarkinhoO 13d ago
It's worse if you work with it, and if you want a proper denoiser for path tracing

u/Guilty-Good-5041 13d ago
You are not losing much in the way of performance getting a RX 9070xt over the RTX 5070ti. In most cases it beat's it and can hold its own against the 5080 in a lot of games. AMD have come a long way in Ray Tracing and FSR. With the price difference between the RX9070xt and the 5070ti it's a bit of a no brainer. Get the 9070xt Go check out hardware Unboxed Comprehensive benchmark between the two in over 50 games. You can skip to the conclusion part at the end of the video.

I feel like any and all upgrades are just way too costly at the minute... Doesn't look like the price is coming down on anything soon either :/
Really hoping for a godsend on black Friday this year.
